Exactly. The more dense the better, but any foam will do the job

Hey all,

I would like to pick someone's brain. How will a sub interact with the floor if I remove the four little feet on the corners of a sub and place it on a riser? Reason why I am asking is that I already have a HD-SUB12 on a Subdude, but my wife wants to put an end table over it. So that the ports and such are not blocked, I would need to remove the feet to lower it by about an inch. Thanks for your help.

It would have a minimal impact in the quality of your bass response and one you may or may notbe able to detect. I doubt anything different would occur as far as the interaction with the floor since it will be on a Subdude.

Heres a pic of the sub riser that I built...I filled the inside with foam.. And the feet underneath the sub and the riser are just stick on slider feet from walmart for 4 bucks for 4

Good job! What're your thoughts on it? Has it made a noticeable difference in your setup?

Yes I believe it has made a difference as far as the bass is much smoother and cleaner...Plus I like the fact that it is off of the floor.

I picked up a sheet of the Walmart poly fill foam, but it feels very soft and squishy. Then, while at my mechanic, he had a pile of foam packing material, that appeared much more dense than what I got at Walmart. From what you have posted, I assume I would be better off with the foam I got at my mechanic?

Yeah, the trick is to dampen your platform and fill any void so it will not sound hollow. This will decouple the sub from the floor, as well as provide absorption for excess/muddy bass so the bass will seem more smooth, tight and punchy

At leas that's what I've learned from BD's teachings

I'm using really dense memory foam from a mattress topper and it works great

Those pesky buggers...

And that comes from raising it off the floor correct?

You are dealing with the axial modes which are the strongest out of the 3 types (axial, tangetial and oblique.) As far as the axial modes, they are the strongest and most important. There are two types of axial modes, vertical and horizontal. To subwoofers, waves are just that, and nothing esle, as they are non-directional. So, when you move the sub around the room, you are dealing with the horizontal modes, while when you raise the sub, you are dealing with the vertical modes. (Thanks BD for your wealth of knowledge!)

Built and placed mine in the room today.
Will check with the SMS-1 later in the week.
Football is starting and too many doctors to see tomorrow.

I used some packing foam that came from my mechanic instead of the Polyfill from Walmart. Used 2 pieces, but did not glue them in place. They are being held in strictly from the snug fit. Not sure if I am better off this way or by having a single piece of foam glued in place, or should I glue everything???? Somehow, the foam is angled. I may take a very sharp knife and do some final trimming.

You can see how the foam didn't come out completely even.

Came out real nice Animo'. No need to worry about gluing the 2 pieces together, as IMO, it looks like they're not going anywhere anyway. Also, if it Sounds good as is, I'd say you're set. I was going to build one very similar to that today but I didn't get around to it. I'm doing the same thing as you did; using wood glue with a couple 2x3's to adhere the MDF piece to them. Then I'll use some left over foam to go under for when my 2nd PA-120 arrives (hopefully by late this week).

Today was just totally weird. two weeks ago, my friend Nick kicked the grill off the sub and broke the grill pegs. eD sent me new ones. Today, I go to the mailbox to get yesterday's mail, and there's another package from eD, with............ grill pegs!!!!! Don't you know it, Nick knocks off the grill again and breaks the pegs all over again. How did eD know?? Not only that, but he also managed to rip one of the rubber feet off the bottom, but we got everything fixed and put back together .......but I couldn't have done it without his help and the help of another friend to get this thing up off the ground and onto the riser. I didn't do any formal testing, but it sounded a little bit better than just on the floor.

Either your doing too much slam dancing, too close to the sub or you need to ease-up on the drinks for Nick!

Very happy to hear the happy ending.

Is your friend an angry monkey or something....?

Your boy needs to lay off the hyphy juice! Glad there was no serious damage done to the sub
