Subwoofer risers, what are they good for?
Sorry for my ignorance
But I'm thinking, so the bass won't affect the floor and structure, or something like that...

In a simple explanation, it decouples the sub from the floor, reducing vibrations. It also moves the sub upwards, thus dealing with vertical modes that can create standing waves from your sub.

If I were you, I would go back and read the first three posts in this sticky, it will tell you everything you need to know........happy reading!

Thank you very much for that info, so would it have anything to do with sparing poor neighbors too?

You beat me to it Fors! lol

Yes, it serves several purposes including decoupling, isolating, increasing perceived output, etc. View Big Daddy's explanation about axial and tangential modes in post # 2.

Neighbors below you or next to you? It would be much more effective with neighbors below you than next to you. Remember, this is just for the vibrations. Sub waves are non-directional, thus everybody gets punished that is around you. For neighbors next to you, acoustic room treatments may be in order.

Well, I now know what I should do in the future, big kudos to Big Daddy's informative and useful posts, and to you guys

put the subwoofer on a riser or hang it from the ceiling and get shot by the wife in the process.

Pretty much all the blu-ray members that listen to Big Daddy have a big bulls-eye on their a$$, as far as their wives are concerned.

Ahhhh!!!!

the advantages of not being married.
No WAF or GFAF to deal with.
As far as I'm concerned, if she don't like it, she can leave!!

I've been debating about making a riser for my sub... but I just realized that my sub is already about a foot off the ground...

This might sound strange, but everything (my tv, towers, receiver, sub, etc) sits on a 'ledge' along a wall. I know that may sound weird, but everything fits really nice there and while I'm still renting a place it seems to work just fine. So would a riser still help at all if it is already higher than the rest of the floor in the room? (The room is in the basement, all carpeted, brick walls...)

It may still help. Getting the subwoofer off the floor and raising it by 2 feet can be beneficial. You can build a riser so cheaply that it may be worthwhile to build one. Even if it doesn't help significantly, you will have some fun building it and will improve your carpentry skills.

Listen to this guy. He knows what hes talking about. I made the mistake of buying pre made materials when I should have just built it from scratch. Next time, I will know better.

What are you talking about? I listened to him. I Wanted a higher riser then he made on the beginning of the thread so i bought legs that had the screw in them and the brackets. Lowes had no remnants of carpet or wood so i couldnt go that route, and i had no equipment to speak of so i had to buy that. leave me alone Brent!

Agreed on the "cheaply" part. Materials don't cost much. And if you want to go the easy route, I paid $7.99 for my Lack side table from IKEA! Great, cheap way to make a riser.
