October 15:

53. The Tingler (1959) -
There's a bit of a novelty to a movie like this, but it's not something that will ever scare you or that you'll want to watched repeatedly. It was made way before home video was even a thought, so William Castle was never concerned about home viewing for something like this later. It was made specifically for the theater, and it plays more like something you'd see at an amusement park than something you want to watch at a normal theater. May have been an interesting idea a in its time, but it hasn't aged well in the slightest. The gimmicks are laughable, with the movie literally stopping at times to address the audience about the tingler being loose in the theater. William Castle comes on screen beforehand, urging the viewer to scream whenever something terrifies them. The entire plot of the movie centers around screaming to release the fear tingling that can cause death. You could make a drinking game out of how often they talk about screaming to save your own life. As a movie, it really is nothing special, and the amusement wears off very quickly. For something that is supposed to be all gimmicks, it's actually really dull, with nothing of interest happening until almost 45 minutes in. This entire thing could have been condensed to an hour (or even a 10 minute theme park ride). The best scene is when a deaf, mute woman is being scared to death. There's a shot of a bathtub filled with blood and a hand reaching out that's in color. It's easily the best part and the only thing worth your time with this movie.

54. Slaughter High (1986) -
I really don't have much to say about this one. It's another generic slasher. The opening is so goofy that it's almost like a Troma movie. It easily could have been used for something like The Toxic Avenger or Class of Nuke 'Em High. The nerd is so ridiculously cliched. It's Revenge of the Nerds level. That is the first indication that this movie is not meant to be taken seriously, and that to me is already sign number one that a slasher is going to stink. Once the killer shows up, he looks really cool. It's not the most elaborate costume, but it was simple and memorable. The kills are mostly forgettable, with the only two that stood out for me being the acid bath and an electrocution while having sex (of course they have sex in that dingy, abandoned school when a killer is stalking them). Honestly, I was pretty bored with this one, and nodded off for like 5 minutes. I had to force myself to get up and move around while I watched it. When the killer unmasks, it's pretty good. The ghosts (yeah, there's ghosts) is out-of-left-field, but considering how lame the rest of the movie was, I welcomed the randomness. The ending in the hospital is over-the-top and something I enjoyed more than most of the rest of the movie. Not the worst slasher, but far from the best. Just a middle of the road one.

55. Frightmare (1983) -
Another movie I feel I don't have much to say about. It's a strange plot. Drama students steal the corpse of a famous horror actor because... reasons? Haven't they seen Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things? Of course, the actor comes back and starts murdering all of them one by one. Jeffrey Combs is in it (very young) and he gets the best death. It was very fitting too, considering his history as Herbert West. The ending cemetery chase during the day is fun. I really have no idea why, I just like chases that take place in cemeteries, especially sunny Californian cemeteries. The most memorable part of the movie is the horror actor who has risen from the grave (again because... reasons?). His acting is so cheesy, but it's mostly enjoyable. He even does a racist asian thing with his face. You know what I'm talking about, the thing little kids do when asked to make the face of a Chinese person where they pull back their eyelids. Yeah, I'm rambling now. Fun, but very forgettable movie.

56. City of the Living Dead (1980) - 1/2
Lucio Fulci's visual masterpiece. Most people seem to be of the opinion that The Beyond or Zombie is Lucio Fulci's best movie. For me, City of the Living Dead stands way above both. All three have their merits, but almost every shot of this movie is horrific and stunning. There are so many great moments. The zombies look terrifying, the visual effect of crying blood, the atmosphere with city streets and cemeteries covered with fog, the woman buried alive, the zombies rising from their tombs... it's all so beautiful. The most famous scene is obviously the regurgitated guts scene. If you haven't seen this scene, then you need to do yourself a favor and get a copy of this movie immediately. It's one of the best gore scenes ever in a horror movie. It's horrific and unsettling, and the effects look good. That's what horror movies are supposed to do. This movie would have been even better if there was no dialogue and it just had screens of text explaining what was going on while the music played. Did I mention the music is fantastic? Because it is. I love the scores to The Beyond and House By the Cemetery, but top to bottom City of the Living Dead might have the best music of a Fulci movie. The characters in this movie are very lacking, but most of that is due to how many their are and how quickly the movie moves along. Seriously, in the first half hour you're jumping from scene to scene with zero connections between all of them other than spooky stuff is happening. This movie would have been better if it were longer since we never get any true grasp of who the characters are. There are also a few scenes that felt out of place and pointless. I'm speaking specifically about the drill scene. It's bloody and gory, and the effect looks amazing, but it serves nothing to the overall plot and made the movie feel cheap like it was only put in to serve the gorehounds. This movie was above that, even if it had amazing gore. Every fan of horror movies owes it to themselves to watch this movie, for the same reason they would watch Nosferatu, Black Sunday, The Shining, Carnival of Souls, or Suspiria. It's a horror visual masterpiece.

57. The Slayer (1982) -
Have you seen the slasher movie Humongous? This is basically the same thing. People are stuck on an island with a killer and the entire thing is so dark that you can't really even make out what is happening on the screen. With such a small cast of characters, the entire thing just dragged with few kills. Even the ones that we do see are not shown in any graphic detail on screen. You may get the indication that there are some nice kills because this movie is a video nasty, but you'd be wrong. For a movie that barely scratched 80 minutes long, it was such a tedious, slow film. It's the same basic plot as Let's Scare Jessica To Death too, which I now have even more of an appreciation for. The last five minutes of The Slayer is so out of left field that it's hilarious. The killer shows up and he looks cool and stupid at the same time. It's laughable and confusing. And then there's the ending... I'll go ahead and put spoiler tags, though you really shouldn't bother with this movie anyway.
[Show spoiler]It turns out the entire thing is a dream. Not only a dream, but the main character is still a little girl having this bad dream. So she's dreaming of herself many, many years older. It's so stupid and hilarious that it almost made me want to bump the score up just a nudge. But I couldn't and had to restrain myself.
I can't recommend this one. It's just another piece of crap video nasty movie that doesn't live up to that title.

10/1 The Terror 1/2
[Show spoiler]Been putting off seeing this for a while, overall its an okay oldie, but doesn't compare to the Price/Corman collaborations.

.......Dr. Terror's House of Horrors
[Show spoiler]Vaguely recall watching this on AMC, recommendable mainly for its cast, Cushing, Lee, Sutherland and Gough. Its also nice to see Sutherland playing a nice guy for once.

.......Terror Train 1/2
[Show spoiler]Enjoyed this more than Prom Night and the change of masks were a nice touch, really felt for the villain here, more so than the protagonist.

10/2 Grizzly
[Show spoiler]Nice piece of 70s camp, pretty damn good for a Jaws knockoff with a giant killer bear.
.......Prophecy (1979) On the other side of the coin, pretty depressing for a movie that exists in the same genre, especially when you consider its essentially "ManBearPig: The Movie"

10/3 Dark Was the Night 1/2
[Show spoiler]Been a Kevin Durand fan since Smokin' Aces so its nice to see him finally come front and center in a horror movie, as far as recent horror films its a good hidden gem on Netflix.

10/4 Dracula: Prince of Darkness 1/2
[Show spoiler]One of my favorite horror movies, only the second of Hammer's Dracula movie, where Lee still actually talks and has one of three favorite Hammer girls, Suzan Farmer.

10/5 Die Monster Die 1/2
[Show spoiler]Was still in the mood for Farmer after Prince of Darkness so decided to check this out, essentially a 60s b-movie with Karloff, probably not a good sign that youtube suggested the Astro Zombies if I liked this. Overall just okay, but after watching Hammer and Amicus its nothing remotely comparable.

10/6 The Frighteners 1/2
[Show spoiler]Maybe one of my favorite horror comedies and favorite movies of the 90s, latter Michael J Fox and early Peter Jackson, add to that John Astin, Jeffrey Combs, R Lee Ermey and Jack Busey, holy ---- I love this cast.

10/7 Tremors 5: Bloodlines 1/2
[Show spoiler]While the CGI is world's better than any of the other films, we went from a movie with Kevin Bacon and Remo Williams (yes, that's what I'm calling Fred Ward), to Remo and Michael Gross to now Michael Gross and Jamie Kennedy. That's like doing an Escape from NY sequel with Matthew Lillard in the place of Kurt Russell. Though I wanted to like this the amount of time we waste on Jamie Kennedy really burned me out. The guy is fine in small doses but this was too much for me.

10/8 Killer Klowns from Outer Space 1/2
[Show spoiler]I try to watch this every year. While the characters are very stock and the Terenzi brothers really annoying the makeup and effects (even the dated ones) are really what makes this movie. Also Royal Dano from Something Wicked this Way Comes and Spaced Invaders. I can never have enough of that guy and his "what in tarnation" reaction to aliens.

10/9 Spring 1/2
[Show spoiler]I'm ashamed to admit it took me this long to finally watch this, though its difficult to go into just what this is about I will say that the character development, special effects and ending are superb. Though I've seen other films approach the genre in this way, establishing character and mood first, not many to date have done it quite this well in a while.

.......The Gorgon
[Show spoiler]A reunion of the cast of some of greats of Hammer, but mostly Lee and Cushing, its an interesting reinvention of the kind of story we usually hear only about werewolves. A good movie but not quite up to par with the rest of the early Lee/Cushing collaborations.

10/10 Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 1/2 Recently grabbed WB's Blu-ray Hammer Collection so this seemed a good place to start. One of my favorites, a bit dark even for Cushing but still one of the better of Hammer's Frankenstein movies.
10/11 Curse of Chucky Easily my favorite of the Child's Play entries, it takes the premise seriously and both pays tribute to the films before while rebooting the tone and giving us a dark and unexpected follow up to the goofy fifth film.
10/12 Cooties 1/2 A fun time waster, honestly I've enjoyed everything Elijah Wood has done since LOTR (Maniac, Grand Piano, Wilfred, even Open Windows) and this is no exception. Seeing Leigh Whannell and Jack McBrayer (from 30 Rock) was a nice addition to the cast and finally find a movie I like Rainn Wilson in too. Though it could be tighter it does a commendable job of not letting the kid violent derail the premise or humor.
10/13 The Strain: Season 1 A fascinating reinvention of the vampire myth, after getting into season 2 I decided to revisit this and it indeed does hold up to repeat viewings. Definite recommend.
10/14 The Voices The cast made this one for me, its grim enough that it goes into horror territory and at times Gemma Arterton seems to genuinely be having fun with what she's given, as is it plays out a bit like a darker grimmer version of "He Was A Quiet Man". Worth a watch if you like Reynolds and Arterton.
10/15 Lifeforce I wanna give this one the benefit of the doubt, I probably just finished watching the original US theatrical cut, which was for all of its great 80s special effects mostly Steve Railsback spouting exposition about how these alien worked. That said there are a few good things about this, again the effects, the earnestness to tell this story they wanted and to do something different with the genre but being stuck with the lesser cut I can't recommend it (at least until I see Shout Factory's cut).
10/16 Eli Roth Presents The Stranger Shot in Chile and heavily dubbed, the movie follows a loner returning to town being harassed by a gang of hoods and the leader's corrupt cop dad, unfortunately this means basically stocking the town with a bunch of pushovers who would watch and let this happen again and again to further to story. Though the acting is good it just makes me wish I was watching Near Dark, Let the Right One In or its American counterpart instead.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's my first time watching Scream get over it.

A bit dated, the twee #soclever writing grates at parts! especially the name drops and the tone isn't quite level (the Nightmare on Elm Street references and the more on the nose cliche jokes stand out like sore thumbs) but when it's being more generally subversive or genuinely suspenseful it's terrific good fun. It's just a shame it's not quite the great deconstruction it thinks it is, that said, I would likely had liked the film more had I seen it 5-10 years ago and I can see why it was such a bit at the time.

Yeah, I do think a lot of the magic for this movie has dissipated over the years. Anybody that didn't see this when it came out nearly 20 years ago is really missing out. Since then, the horror market has been flooded with movies trying to copy what was done in Scream or flat out doing it better. I would compare it to my experience with Psycho. That movie was groundbreaking at the time it came out. By the time I saw it, I had already been desensitized to that type of horror and storytelling. What was amazing to those that saw it new, was old-hat to me.

Disclaimer: I don't mean to say that Scream is as good a movie as Psycho. Psycho is a far superior motion picture - a masterpiece if you will. I only used it as a reference to show how movies first seen long after its original release can be received in a completely different way.

I may be in the minority here but I have never liked Scream. So many consider it to be original and hip. I thought it was quite the opposite, it steals from almost every other horror movie franchise out there and at the end of the day it's just another slasher movie. The killer was NOT scary IMO, his mask is just silly looking and I don't know how the hell he doesn't trip over his black gown when he's running after his victims. But to be honest it did spawn the comedy spoof Scary Movie which I actually did enjoy so I will give it that.

Just watched V/H/S. Didn't care for the framing narrative and Ti West's short was out of place but I absolutely loved the other shorts. Joe Swanberg's was terrifying despite the stupid twist ending and I thought for a bunch of YouTubers I'd never heard of Radio Silence closed the film in cracking fashion. Shame the two sequels weren't released in the UK on BD so I have to import them from Australia and Germany.

This is show is great but it always seems to be missing genuine horror which is a shame. The acting and directing are more or less flawless but the Horror elements are just happening... There's no emphasis on them from a directing standpoint as it seems they don't have enough time to slow the pace a bit and concentrate on building the dread, suspense and tension in good Horror films. This shouldn't be the case on TV and it's the only issue I ever seem to have with the show. Murphy's shows tend to drop in quality when he has something new a la Scream Queens but so far AHS has not suffered, which has me pleasantly surprised.

10/10 Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 1/2
[Show spoiler]Recently grabbed WB's Blu-ray Hammer Collection so this seemed a good place to start. One of my favorites, a bit dark even for Cushing but still one of the better of Hammer's Frankenstein movies.

10/11 Curse of Chucky
[Show spoiler]Easily my favorite of the Child's Play entries, it takes the premise seriously and both pays tribute to the films before while rebooting the tone and giving us a dark and unexpected follow up to the goofy fifth film.

10/12 Cooties
[Show spoiler]1/2 A fun time waster, honestly I've enjoyed everything Elijah Wood has done since LOTR (Maniac, Grand Piano, Wilfred, even Open Windows) and this is no exception. Seeing Leigh Whannell and Jack McBrayer (from 30 Rock) was a nice addition to the cast and finally find a movie I like Rainn Wilson in too. Though it could be tighter it does a commendable job of not letting the kid violent derail the premise or humor.

10/13 The Strain: Season 1
[Show spoiler]A fascinating reinvention of the vampire myth, after getting into season 2 I decided to revisit this and it indeed does hold up to repeat viewings. Definite recommend.

10/14 The Voices
[Show spoiler]The cast made this one for me, its grim enough that it goes into horror territory and at times Gemma Arterton seems to genuinely be having fun with what she's given, as is it plays out a bit like a darker grimmer version of "He Was A Quiet Man". Worth a watch if you like Reynolds and Arterton.

10/15 Lifeforce
[Show spoiler]I wanna give this one the benefit of the doubt, I probably just finished watching the original US theatrical cut, which was for all of its great 80s special effects mostly Steve Railsback spouting exposition about how these alien worked. That said there are a few good things about this, again the effects, the earnestness to tell this story they wanted and to do something different with the genre but being stuck with the lesser cut I can't recommend it (at least until I see Shout Factory's cut).

10/16 Eli Roth Presents The Stranger
[Show spoiler]Shot in Chile and heavily dubbed, the movie follows a loner returning to town being harassed by a gang of hoods and the leader's corrupt cop dad, unfortunately this means basically stocking the town with a bunch of pushovers who would watch and let this happen again and again to further to story. Though the acting is good it just makes me wish I was watching Near Dark, Let the Right One In or its American counterpart instead.

.........V/H/S: Viral 1/2
[Show spoiler]It seems the more of these they make the less they have to do with the actual VHS medium. While the first two shorts are decent, one where a redneck gets a magic cloak and CGI's a whole lotta magic and another involving a dimensional portal, the segment likely pitched as "skateboarders fighting zombies with samurai blades and handguns" suffers from lame characters, MTV-style editing (which doesn't make sense in a found footage film) and looking the least like VHS. Worst of all the wraparound story makes no sense and doesn't do an adequate job of actually connecting the stories. While the "Parallel Monsters" dimensional story is effectively creepy, at best you can only really count on one great story in any of these movies, "Safe Haven" was the second film's shining star about a cult and "Radio Silence" a chilling and inventive haunted house short in the first.

.........REC: Apocalypse
[Show spoiler]Maybe its just been too long for me since I've watched the REC movies but I found Apocalypse the film I liked the least in the four. While 3 wasn't as incredible as the first two it had a building momentum, here, moving the action from an apartment and wedding party to a boat, it starts slow whereas the end of 2 would left you with a superb cliffhanger. Ultimately it doesn't quite lead meet the standard set by its predecessors.

.........The Creature from the Black Lagoon 1/2
[Show spoiler]Its funny to see the kind of telegraphed scares in the 50s that we all too often complain about in modern movies. Not quite the classic that its kin at Universal were, this is none the less fun in a the clichéd ways that movies of that era were, everything is shot in front of a rear projection, nothing shot on location, characters all fit an archetype and smoke regularly, smash cuts to nature footage and 3D moments less subtle than even the most in your face 3D we see these days, I lost count of how many times that ridiculous monster's flipper hand comes out at you. This is precisely what people who have never seen movies from the 50s probably think they all look. That's its charm though. Its precisely what you expect it to be.

Just saw the film and am thoroughly satisfied. Such grand and majestic set pieces with spot on costuming. This was such a desired treat, a true Gothic romance we haven't gotten in a long while. With stellar performances and a true sense of complete isolation, you're in for a tale that serves as a true throwback to an era of film and storytelling that has all but disappeared in recent years. Get on out there, enjoy and beware... "Crimson Peak." 🎃💀🎃💀

Cloverfield meets Blair Witch in this creative found footage film that get's the fundamentals right like reasons as to why it's being filmed and how it's all edited, along with an exceptionally clever premise that allows for a lot of mileage and mythology that's all well thought out and handled within the small budget. Effects are best hidden in shadows but they're never awful even in brighter light. There's a decent amount of humour as well along with some good moments of thrills. There are few questions left open in the end, and there's one moment where something shocking happens and the characters get over it very quickly, plus I don't know what student camera crew would be able to record this amount of raw footage while also filming one another in the film, but they're only minor issues in a pretty fun film.

That poster gets the 3.5 alone. But I enjoy this movie. Having the beautiful Odette Yustman in it helps though.

Plus the film also co-stars Gary Oldman and Idris Elba.

A small tower block is infested by a sexy parasite setting off everyone into violent sexual frenzy in this intelligent and twisted B-Movie, which just so happens to be produced by classic comedy filmmaker Ivan Reitman. The filmmaking itself is a bit dated, especially the opening moments where we cross cut between a weird violent assault and something mundane without any real context, but once you get into it, it provides plenty of horrifying stuff revolving around the infected people and some clever ideas around sexual taboos and disturbing scenarios. Only other complaint is that it should have kept the working title of Orgy of the Blood Parasites.

-Don't Look Now (1973):

Haunting, dreamlike thriller about bereaved couple John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland, Julie Christie) -- devastated by the drowning death of their young daughter -- relocating to Venice to assist in the restoration of a historic church, when Laura meets a peculiar pair of sisters (one blind), who prophesize about visions involving their lost child being "happy". Soon, she becomes obsessed with the idea that their girl is still with them, while John is taunted with eerie glimpses of a small figure wearing what appears to his his daughter's red rain slicker skulking around the fog-shrouded canals and alleyways. Director Nicolas Roeg (working from a short story by Daphne Du Maurier, whose fiction also inspired Hitchcock's Rebecca and The Birds), winds all of this into an impressionistic narrative where past and present collide, leading to a stunning climax where all of the obtuse clues and unexplained happenings coalesce into an unforgettable Big Picture. Not "scary" in the traditional sense, Don't Look Now is a sad, melancholy experience that flirts with genre conventions before upending them in unexpected ways, and Sutherland and Christie make for a superb couple (there's a brilliant scene where Roeg attains an avid sensuality by cross-cutting between them making love and them betting dressed to go out afterwards, a bit later cribbed -- via his own admission -- by Steven Soderbergh in Out Of Sight).
