Yes, it is.

I ordered the German import blu-ray that Filmmaker provided the link for, so now I hope to have this extended cut in high definition.

Still a shame, though, as the flipper dvd came in a nice steel case. No need for it now, either.

I am trying to back up the dvd, but I suspect that will fail. It is taking forever to read the data on it.
Yea, mine wont transfer either. Pisses me off cause it's my last DVD that I need to back up, of course.

The animated intro (which is really not animated, but still paintings), is what I love most. That prelude helps set up the film and gives you some of the historical background information from the books about the Butlerian Jihad and the various mental conditioning schools and houses of the Landsraad. I also prefer the old voice of the narrator (who was that, BTW?) to the original intro with Virgina Madsen, even though I do find her attractive.
You won't believe this, but the narrator was Stan Lee. Yes, that Stan Lee, of Marvel Comics.

It's not Stan Lee.

I just checked my steelbook flipper DVD and both sides seemed to play fine.

I could really be wrong. I have done some research, and others have suspected it was Stan Lee, but I guess it is uncredited. How do we know it is not him? I have certainly not gone back and rewatched it to verify.

I stand corrected, it definitely is NOT Stan Lee. Some reports are that it might be Frank Herbert, but that is more speculation on my part. I can tell you with 100% that I was wrong earlier.

I would recommend that you play it all the way through; mine played fine until Chapter 8, 1 hour 22 minutes, and then it froze up. This was on the extended cut side of the flipper disc.

I did a very brief search online and the narrator for the extended cut is listed as "unknown" or "uncredited male actor" according to Wikipedia and imdb.com respectively. I did an exhaustive 3 minute search and this is all I could find before my attention span failed.

Yeah, it is not Stan Lee. Not only that, but the narrator mispronounces several words during that narration. The worst one is Sardaukar, which he calls sar-du-kal. It is pronounced correctly by the emperor: "I have promised the baron five legions of my Sardaukar terror troops." That means about 50,000 soldiers that have the strength of ten men each. Epic stuff right there.

My flipper DVD freezes up on the extended cut as well, not sure of the exact time but it's a scene where Paul and his father are talking freezes up and wont go further, You can skip to the next scene and it plays the rest of the way.

Really frustrating, hopefully they release a Blu-ray in the states with both the theatrical and Extended cuts so I can get rid of this faulty disc.

I would venture to guess that the reason why Universal haven't is because the extended/deleted scenes are in rough shape. Even on the DE two disc set they look much rougher than the theatrical scenes. The theatrical scenes and theatrical cut actually look better than the US BD, but the DE discs do not have English subtitles.

I finally got the flipper DVD to play correctly after cleaning BOTH sides about 6 times with lens cleaner. I then successfully backed it up to a DVD+R DL disc. I wanted to see this again and my stubbornness paid off.

Even so, I am glad that I have the German blu-ray coming because even with upscaling the DVD does not do the film justice; the blu-ray can only be better.

You'll also enjoy the theatrical cut on the other BD when you get that set. It's encoded much better than the Universal set:

It is a shame that the German blu-ray lacks English subtitles, but I am familiar enough with this film that I don't have to have them.

You are right about the narrator not being able to pronounce 'Sardaukar." Late into the film he has to say it again and it is entirely different than how he said it during the prologue. It sounded like Sardooookar to me the second time.

Yeah, it's definitely not Stan Lee. I'm not sure who it is, and he may mispronounce some of the Dune names, but I still think he has an interesting voice. Reminds me a little bit of John Huston's The Bible film narration (I know it's not him either).
