Just showing a toilet in the shower scene was pretty shocking in 1960.

[Show spoiler] You have to realize that in that era, most films were pretty tame. While there were some exceptions, all but a few films (and some imports) adhered to the Production Code, which was still in effect. Wiki has a good article about the Production Code. I was about 11 when this came around to my neighborhood theater. Even at that young age, I loved horror and monster films and had seen many. And I was familiar with more because I read "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine, which promoted both the film and its author, Robert Bloch. My mother had seen the film and she claimed it made her physically ill and she would punish me if I saw it. I saw it anyway. Frankly, at that age, I thought it wasn't scary at all and found it kind of boring. I did drive my mother crazy by imitating Norman Bates all the time. Around the same time, Hammer Studios released "The Brides of Dracula". There's a scene in that movie where the vampire, played by actor David Peel, calls over his mother in a nasally, British accent and says, "Mother....mother....mother come here...." as he bites her on the neck. I drove my mother crazy by imitating that line as well. |

Nice I definitely want this. I wish they'd put the Bates Motel movie from 1987 on Blu-ray too, it wasn't that great, but it is in the continuity of these original movies.

Completely agree. I actually like the sequels even though I didn't see part 2 and 3 until about 7 years ago. Always thought a "sequel" to a Hitchcock film was blaspheme. But they're actually pretty good...not good enough for $20/each from SF though.
My parents didn't let me see any Hitchcock films when I was a kid either, they were still freaked from seeing The Birds and Psycho when they were younger. Psycho especially was pretty much considered an "R-rated film" to them, even when I was growing up. Did get to see some of his tv show cause I was fascinated by him. Same with "Thriller", got to see that too. Probably scary enough for a little kid (then). |

I always thought Psycho 2 was an excellent sequel and a worthy follow up to the original. When Psycho 3 was announced, I was getting skeptical and thinking they were attempting to drain the cash cow, but the film wasn't as bad as I thought it might have been, but certainly a detour from the original masterpiece. I still only own the original and part 2. By the time 4 came out, I was done. Part 4 was as bad as Jaws 4 to me, or Poltergeist 3. So, in MY mind, I don't even acknowledge it's existence.
I was also very weary when I heard it was being turned into a television series, but I gave it a chance and it very quickly became my TV obsession. I thought the TV series delivered a cinematic-worthy BLOCKBUSTER HIT as they retold the entire story with some amazingly clever creative differences from the original story. I MUCH prefer the dark and dysfunctional but loving backstory of Norman and Norma from the TV series than the abusive and hateful one from the film series (part 4). |

PSYCHO II is possibly the greatest horror sequel ever made (along with DAWN OF THE DEAD), and an excellent psychological horror mystery thriller in its own right, well worth $20 from Scream Factory. No, it wasn't directed by Hitch, but he was dead by 1983, so I'll let the film off the hook for that.
PSYCHO III is actually pretty damn good too, especially for a second sequel; in fact, now that I think about it, it may be the best second horror sequel ever made (along with DAY OF THE DEAD, natch). |

Psycho 2 was definitely one of the best horror sequels ever. Perkins is just awesome and the plot twists are great. Don't care much for the others.
Edit: I do actually like III as well it's IV I don't care for. Last edited by elecrofunk; 09-17-2017 at 08:42 AM. |
