The only one that I have ever really liked was the first Silent Hill. But I am hoping this is the one that breaks the mould. There is a lot of talent working on this and Crystal Dynamics is involved in the production. It could still suck, but I am optimistic.

Considering the APPALLING track record for video game movies, I'm not holding my breath.

Well, this one has Alicia -- something else the other ones didn't.

Yeah, but Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has Angelina Jolie and Daniel Craig!

I will never criticise a film that has Lara Croft and James Blonde working together.

It comes down to telling a good story. The more video games become story based, the better chance one of them will become a good movie someday.

None of that can save this turd of a film.

As for the new version, it may do a 180 and redeem the mess that was the Angelina version.

The problem then is unless they're relatively short, the adaptations have to cram too much into a two-hour movie. Perhaps something like Resident Evil would suit the long-form-storytelling of television?

But to be honest I've never been captivated by a video games narrative. I get bored of cut-scenes if they're too frequent or they take away the decision process too much.

You would hate the Metal Gear Solid series then. Cut scenes galore.

The Tomb Raider reboot this movie is clearly based on isn't that complex of a story. It's basically: shipwreck, survive, learn the truth about father and evil rival organization that opposed him, beat evil organization to artifact on island. Any complexity that made the game a longer story can easily be condensed for a feature length movie. We'll see how wellthey did that in a few weeks.

TR is pretty long for its genre. A good 15 hours. ROTR is 20 hours. Most of it is falling down though, nothing to do with story or characters. Same with Uncharted, should easily make s solid movie.

Something like Halo could lend itself well to the big screen, but it would need a $200m budget. No way can you fit the scale of the set pieces in a smaller film.

Tomb Raider II & III Lara (second along) will always be the most nostalgic for me, as those were the two entries in the franchise I was first introduced to. In terms of personality, though, I think Angel of Darkness Lara (fourth along) is my favourite. She's sassy as **** in that game. The darker look ain't too shabby, either.

I understand the majority of the game is gameplay, so the story isn't that long, but I've always found the gameplay more compelling than the cut scenes. One of the things Angelina's movies lacked was the sense of gameplay, it was bogged down with exposition and not enough tomb raiding.

So it will be nice if they get the balance right.

The gameplay should be more compelling - it's a video game, so it's narrative should be mostly enjoyed through interaction. It's a medium that rewards (quite literally at times) repetative tasks and somewhat open narrative because of choice control.

Buy like any other narrative being translated from one medium to another, a film needs to focus on those elements it can adapt that will make it a good film, which should be the basic story and character as conveyed through visual imagery and character decisions. So hopefully there's a couple moments of Lara finding treasure, but they better have specific reasons to occur for either the story or her character development, otherwise it's not adapting the conceit properly from the video game medium to the film medium.
