You're missing the whole point. The Redux is Dune the way it SHOULD HAVE BEEN edited in the first place. The narrative is concise and comprehensive, you never have a single "huh" or "wtf?" or "ehhh.....?" moment when you watch this cut. Yes, it's "only" 480p but God damn it's a very nice encoding and I've even watched it upscaled on a 65 inch screen and it was very watchable. The redone effects, music cues and compositions are also done in a professional manner. If you're refusing to watch Redux simply because it's 480p then you're losing out on the hands down best version of Dune.

The Spicediver edit is now my favourite way to watch the movie. It's really well edited and the music is very nicely mixed (its awful what they did to the soundtrack on the extended tv version). I have watched it on a decent sized screen and it didn't affect my enjoyment at all.

Yup. It would be super nice if Spicediver's Redux could be redone in 1080p though - but it would probably be a tremendously huge project for just one amateur fan to render it, even though his 480p version is the bomb

We can still hope

Visiting the parents this weekend and dug out my steelbook DVD. I checked both sides and I am able to skip through the entirety of both sides. I have noticed some pixellation glitches in places though. So not in the best shape but not completely ruined either. I should probably back it up but need to leave soon, so next time!

Also forgot the Extended Cut is widescreen. Always thought it was pan & scan! It looks pretty nice too.

I know that the picture quality is rubbish on the U.K. high flyers disc but are the bonus features any good? Is it worth buying for those three features. Isn’t one of them about 40 mins long?

The best combination of PQ, AQ, and extras is to get the DE two disc set and the US disc. That problem is that the DE set is OOP.

I’ve got the U.S one but thought I’d get the u.k one for the extras. There’s no way I’m buying the DE version as it’s too expensive because it’s oop and sellers are taking the pi**.

There were several new Limited Edition German mediabooks (a little over 1000 copies b/w the 4 or 5 differnet covers) that were supposed to be released on 2/28 for around 25EUR. The best information was these were to be re-packs of the 2 Disc Schoeder releases.

Now the release date has been pushed back 3 weeks and orders no longer being taken. Not sure if this is sold out, possibly being cancelled, or just on hold for production issues.

Koch has also put out some info on one of their social media pages that they are supposedly working on a new transfer for release sometime later in the year. It was unclear if this was a 4K release or they were just doing a 4K scan and plan to release a new BD.

The PQ on the old UK disc was rubbish so I imagine the "High Flyers" disc is the same?

I have said this before but I literally needed 2 minutes years ago comparing the old US and UK discs to realise the UK disc was awful! (and the AQ bitrate was half that of the US too as I remember).

I still have the old UK slipcover though and very nice it is too (covering the German 2-disc naturally!).

I'd look forward to either one of those happening...I'd imagine we'll be seeing maybe more than one new release to coincide with Villeneuve's movie next year.

This was one I attempted many times over the years to watch. Both the '84 film and the actual novel. Neither to success. But for some reason I had an itch to give it another shot and this time, I was finally able to sit though it from start to finish.

It was far from the disaster long purported. Found it to be pretty decent overall, and again I am not a David Lynch guy (Personally I think his MO is to be weird... for the sake of weird). They did a first-rate job making you believe you were in another world, the score is phenomenal and Kyle MacLachlan gracefully carried the whole thing - quite the feat considering how expensive it was circa '84 and it was his first acting gig(!?!)

But you could feel how details, characters, etc. fly by so fast, so randomly in the second half after the first hour of solid world-building and overall set-up. Definitely in need of an extra half-hour to maybe even an hour to let things flow better. Curious to check out the Alan Smithee TV cut (Although I did watch its awful prologue - stick with the Virginia Madsen narration) or the aforementioned Redux fan-edit.

This also screams for a SHOUT Select release with the new film iteration dropping next year.

Glad you finally made it through it. Albert J. Whitlock is the man who made this film look so good. His best example in Dune are the worms that he actually built as models. He also did the wonderful matte paintings in The Thing of the alien spacecraft.

Whitlock was indeed a true artist...though I believe his first name was Albert.

On the latest Just the Discs podcast, Bill Ackerman of the Supporting Characters podcast mentions that a new edition of Dune is in the works but he doesn't know who is doing it.

It would be nice if we could get a region A release that is comparable to the German release for a couple years back.
