Jeez... I guess I used the wrong word... "scam"

I meant, they are trying to make as much money as possible... due to the success of the film. So, it really is not a scam... it is smart business...

But... the "scam" part... or the part that is unfair... is that they could have easily placed extras on a standard DVD and two-packed/combo'ed it...

So, the people that love extras... and loved the movie... will have to spend money in a month... and to see the extras that they enjoy... they need to double dip... right?

I'm used to double dipping for extended cuts. So I'm happy to do it again.

Especially since it gets me Avatar in April, rather than having to wait.

No...I don't see how anyone HAS to spend money in a month? You simply buy the version(s) of your choice. If you want to get it immediately it won't have any special features. If you only want to buy it once and want the extras, you have the choice of waiting until the multi disc set comes out .

They are releasing details of the november edition on the 23rd so we'll know where we stand next week.

"In another unusual wrinkle, "Avatar" will reach shelves*on a Thursday as opposed to the traditional Tuesday release day, so it can coincide with Earth Day. Fox is*poised to announce a special environmental campaign that will key off of that date and the film's themes of ecological harmony.*Landau and writer-director*James Cameronwill attend an March 23 press event in*West Hollywood where they will discuss the release, the environmental tie-in and plans for a multi-disc "ultimate version" that will follow in November."

But they're not preparing extras for the DVD either.

They put all the resources into preparing the BLU/DVD release of the movie it's self.

And considering they're focusing on making it the best looking BLU to date, I can't wait.

Like I said, I'll probably buy all of them. I already have the regular one on pre-order and also just pre-ordered the steelbook from Amazon UK.

The higher-capacity discs, according to Sony, will be readable on current Blu-ray Disc players with a firmware upgrade. No date has been set to include the increased space, but according to Blu-ray.com "it will likely happen sometime later this year.

35.4 GB x 2 =70.8 GB Dual Layer.
When will people give up on the whole higher capacity Blu-Ray. It will never ever ever ever ever happen. Todays Blu-Ray players were designed to read BD-25s and BD-50s. Anything else can't be done with the current formats architecture. Thus movies on higher capacity discs would be a compatibility nightmare that would alienate the majority of the Blu-Ray market. Higher capacity discs might be used for data storage or read writing but for prerecorded movies it will never happen plain and simple.

Not that it matters cause for the thousanth flipping time BD-50 is more then enough.

At reference quality 2D 1080p video and one 24 bit lossless audio track a BD-50 can fit 4.5 hours of playtime

At reference quality 3D 1080p video and one 24 bit lossless audio track a BD-50 can fit 3 hours of playtime

There has never been a single 3D movie longer then 3 hours and movies longer then 4.5 hours are incredibly rare. Why would studios risk alienating consumers from the Blu-Ray format only to give a capacity increase thats virtually never needed? Simple answer THEY WON'T

Once the special edition features are announced I might decide to pick it up if the features look interesting enough to me and there is a **** load of em.

Seeing as I'm sure I'll be able to pick up the bare bones one for $19.99 and as always with movies that come with a DVD, I split the purchase with a friend of mine. So it'll only run me $10. I'd sell off the bare bones one to my cousin for like $5 come November should I decide to get the November release after all.

All I want is a bare bones release with plenty of room for the PQ and AQ as soon as possible...and it sounds like that's what they are putting out.

I'll still carry a torch or pitchfork with you guys though if you let me know where we're meeting up before we storm the castle.

Why do you guys get so upset and take this kind of stuff so personally? It's not like this concept is new. Companies have been pulling this since the start of DVD and it will NEVER go away.

Why can't the people unhappy about the April release wait till the November release to get what they want? Also what makes you guys think that all of the extras that are planned for the Nov release are ready to go for the April release? Obviously Fox is rushing the barebones out ASAP but until we get information about how much space the actual movie takes up on the disc, I think it's premature to cry foul.

I just want it to have the proper theatrical release AR, which I am getting the impression the first release will not have and is the main reason I will double dip.

Personally I'll happily double dip... that is *double* dip... once for this initial release to "get me through" and then I'll hold out for the 3D release.

I'd rather have the chance to double dip and get my hands on a 2D version in April than be forced to wait months for the 3D version... as long as that 3D version will still be on the way.

But the 2D SE version can take a hike... I'll be happy with the *movie* until I can enjoy the bonus feature on the suped up 3D version. Now, if they don't do an SE 3D version... but only a bare-bones 3D version... then we'll have something to really ***** about as that's a cold hard slap in the consumer's face/wallet.

The only "bullshit" here is that there's a downside to maximizing audio/video. Watchmen's video compression is not even close to reference, as a matter of fact it's lousy, people who say this seem to be unable to distinguish the quality of the master and the way it's compressed.... but at least now I know what your idea of "reference quality" is

I'll be renting in April, but I'll be buying when either the price comes down or a truly definitive version appears.
