I am really looking forward to seeing this classic again for the first time in about 10 years. Plus I have 5 other movies coming in 4 other packages tomorrow. I can't wait for it all to come.

At 11:55 pm, I arrived at Walmart, at 12:05 am, I had it in my hand, at 12:10 am I was out the store, (it was $32.06 total) and now 12:57, I am home and am ready to watch.

Does anybody have any LSD?

Took some pics for you, though with my Evo 4G phone, so not the best but I think they got the job done.

We're never going to get it. Not ever. Never, never, never.... NEVER. Get it, yet? Those scenes will NEVER be restored to any current or future version of Fantasia. The owners of Fantasia have deemed the footage to have no place in the film. No matter how much damage you think you're inflicting on the Disney company by withholding your money, it will not change the company's feeling on this matter one iota.

Simply put, if 30 seconds of racist content is the one thing holding you back from a purchase, I have to wonder just why this hill is important enough for you to die on, so to speak.

I agree 100%, though I hate that we're back to discussing the "censorship" issue. I would probably be furious if they cut the "we work all day we work all night" song from Dumbo, because that's such an important deal to the movie. But the slave-fairy-thing in Fantasia? Give me a break. Don't buy the movie if it makes you happy, but know that Disney will never put a blatantly racist-depicted character back in a movie when it edits out so smoothly.

Loads on PS3 as "Fantasia Diamond Edition".

Trailers:
Disney Blu-Ray 3-D
Bambi: Diamond Edition
Cars 2 Teaser (I loved CARS, and wow is this teaser bad...is Pixar making fun of their track record for underwhelming teasers, deciding to make the absolute worst teaser trailer possible? If so, Mission Accomplished, Emeryville...)
Horrific Talking Chihuahua Movie

----

Impressions...

I'm going to update this as I watch throughout the night. Both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 discs share the same menu screen. Based on the ethereal "floating sails" concept from F2k, on the Fantasia disc, music from Beethoven's 6th plays as the floating sails circle a recessed stage formed of descending concentric circles.

Starting movie now...

(to be continued)

Restoration has brought out considerable details in the live-action. Much brighter than the YCM labs restoration from 1990 that everyone is so familiar with.

The clarity of the images is so pronounced as to be almost shocking -- gone are those hazy blooming blobs of shadow against the cyclorama from the YCM version and the Road Show DVD version. Figures now stand largely in relief. I hate to say it, but I am so used to the softness of the edges in the versions of Fantasia I own, the first few minutes are very challenging to process, as you are bombarded - shot after shot - with things you have never seen before in these frames. After the premiere, one reporter called the movie "A Possible Frankenstein", meaning, the film was so unweildy, it could turn around and kill its creator.

Well, this movie has just been electrified with a modern restoration and what a thrill to see it not only live again, but soar in ways unimaginable just five years ago. I just started the Bach sequence, and I haven't even made it to the animation yet, because I keep pausing and frame-advancing backwards to make sure I can believe my own eye-balls. The color - ...folks, I am paused on Chapter 2, 00:06:26. Look at that range of color in that one frame alone. Aquas, neon pink, sky blu, reds, burnt oranges, blacks, blues, purple.

The entire movie seems to have been almost radically corrected in terms of color timing. I knew the YCM 1990 version was unnaturally dark, with overly-saturated primary colors and the rest. YCM restored Snow White in the very early 90's, and Pinocchio as well in 1992. If you remember how revelatory Pinocchio was when it debuted on Blu-Ray in 2009, take that experience and multiply it by about five times, and you'll have an idea what this is like.

Fantasia isn't just my favorite of the Disney films (notice I didn't say "best" - Fantasia isn't), Fantasia isn't just my favorite animated film -- Fantasia is my favorite film, period. The world of cinema is vast and diverse. The movies are used for almost any purpose imaginable under the sun. Here, in 1940, as the world grew darker amidst war and fears of war, Walt Disney spent over a million dollars to finish a movie without plot or narrative or incident. It was about human creation and human imagination. Cutting edge technology used to salve the most basic of human insticts...the compulsion of expression. . Every single frame of Fantasia, every single note of music inspiring those visuals -- is inundated with the collective thrill of artists inspired to transcend their medium. Fantasia celebrates music, painting, acting, dancing, and film technology, but above all else, it celebrates the act of creation.

The recurring motif in the film is that of the conductor. You see it in the Bach sequence with Stokowski, you see it in the interstitials, you see the conductor bit acted out by Mickey, Chernabog, Zeus, and the Sorcerer himself. The other motif is creation -- musicians create sound and color, fairies bring other delicate ceatures to life, Mickey brings the broom to life, evolutionary created life is presented in Rite of Spring, Chernabog debases life to create monstrous ruinous life, the film ends with a celebration of life in Holy Service to an ultimate "creator".

It's 4 in the morning, folks. I haven't made it to Nutcracker yet. To be continued...

I'm very pleased to see this info from Ernest Rister. I don't really get into Disney animation much, but I really do want to get the Fantasia set, as I love classical music, film history, and, importantly for this set, I loved Destino, which apparently necessitates the Fantasia 2000 disc as well. I saw Destino at the Museum of Modern Art and it is really incredible--truly a Dali painting come to life--and I'm also excited to dig into Disney's copious on-disc extras.

I hope my Target has these in stock!

Just picked it up at walmart. A little aggravated, opened it up and the actual plastic on the case itself that holds the fantasia cover in it is all warped and messy on the back, making it hard to get the slip cover back on. Not sure how, it had to be a manufacuring defect I guess. Oh how OCD I've gotten over Blu's.

I like ALL my extra features on physical media, not on streaming.

Please, vote with your wallets and let Disney know this is not the way.
Yeah, I'm not happy about most of the goodies being Blu Live. I prefer my extras on a disc, which Disney could've done with one more Blu-Ray. However...

That's the only complaint I can think of. I agree with Joe Cain, Fantasia is mine, in 1080p. I just look for the DVD set of Fantasia and get that. Hopefully, Disney doesn't pull a re-release and include them in the near future. I will get this set because I want to see Fantasia.

It's $34.99 everywhere from what I can see. Most places in Canada have increase their Disney releases from what it was $28-$29 to well over $30, I suspect because of the Disney coupons. Earlier this year I was able to get most Disney releases at $19 with the coupons, not anymore. Still at $34 it's for 2 movies ($17 each) it's not so bad and using the coupon will bring it down to $24 so I will probably bite on this one.

I'm seeing this on more and more cases: instead of using the standard cellophane with a y-fold at the top and bottom corners, manufacturers are using a straight shrinkwrap, the heat of which seems to frequently warp the plastic which holds the cover art. It is incredibly irritating.... it irritates me more than eco-cases

Thumbs up Great Bargain at Target

I went this morning to pick up my Fantasia Blu Ray set and the Nicolas Cage Sorceror's Apprentice at Target. By buying both I got $10 off store promotion for the double buy and then had them apply the two $10 Disney Rewards coupons (one for each movie). No problem at all and my final bill with 9.75% sales tax was $27.06 so that's about $13 per set. Oh, and on top of that the cash register spit out a $5 off coupon for a store purchase of anything $20 or more over the next week. Thank you, Target!

Do you have the VHS? I friend of mine told me he had some collectors edition from way back when and some kind of promotion t-shirt.

What happened to your HT?
