There is, actually. SDR is limited and if you want image to have less flat appearance, you will have to sacrifice some highlight and shadow information. Unless you want people to play with gamma each time they load a disc. With HDR you can achieve that without sacrificing anything. Hence there's no excuse. Now, in case of Dracula, I don't know if it's intended, incompetence or something overlooked, but theoretically it's what it is.

OutOfBoose is not wrong that SDR grading is all about compromise to squeeze 10 lbs. of contrast into a 5 lb. bag and one very effective tool for doing that is raising the black level. I'm not saying it's my preferred approach, but... you can raise the blacks and you can lower the whites and... not a whole lot else. |

I didn't say they couldn't contrast boost it to heck if they wanted to, it's been a time-honoured tradition for SDR (and black crush is employed on HDR grading more often than people think, Skyfall is downright nasty for it), but I've got plenty of SDR discs that don't look 'flat' in the least despite them not having the black crushed to all get out.
More often than not it's the new restorations from the indies that show how good 1080p can still look because they're doing them with SDR in mind and are properly grading them with skill and nuance, unlike the studios who seem to be doing them all in HDR first and then just crap out a quick SDR trim pass. |

It's funny how this slip is super rare now but so was the Dracula Blu-ray that was released in '07. That was super rare as well...I actually still have mine. I would say the rarest 4k slip is the lenticular of The Shallows....which I also have.

Not having ever owned this on anything besides DVD, what is it exactly that people don't like about the 2007 transfer besides being an older scan? I recently picked up a double feature containing the 2007 release of this bundled with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and I know this isn't considered to be the best release but it was cheaper than buying either of these films separately so I figured what the hell.
So, what is considered to be the best release of this PQ wise? Would it be a good idea to pick up the UHD as I see there has been some criticism of that as well? |

Unfortunately each home video version varies a great deal so you either have to sample and choose, or just be content with the version you have. IMG_1520.jpg IMG_1521.jpg IMG_1522.jpg IMG_1523.jpg IMG_1524.JPG |
