Don't get me wrong, I was very happy to see it presented in something akin to the theatrical ratio on the Blu-ray (1.78 as opposed to 1.85) but the 1.33 version is also worth keeping.
I have CHARIOTS OF FIRE in both the UK (1.85:1) and US releases (1.78:1, from Warner, which mattes everything to that ratio) and the added three percent image is not enough to alter the theatrical composition.

I know. That sort of change doesn't bother me in the slightest. I just thought I'd mention it in case some pedant chimed in with 'but it's 1.78 and NOT the original aspect ratio of 1.85' blah blah.

I asked one of the people in charge of special engagements, and they said it was going to be a 4K digital presentation.

The 35th Anniversary is coming in 2015, I kinda hope they release it as a digibook then so that it could go along with the other Stanley Kubrick releases in digibook. Also Barry Lyndon will be 30 years in 2015 so that would be an awesome year for Kubrick movies.

Are they definitely releasing a 35th anniversary blu-ray of The Shining?

I don't know yet but it kinda does make sense since it is a big anniversary date.

I doubt it since they always do 40th anniversary stuff, not 30 or 35.

So I decided to get the 1980 paperback book with the film poster as a cover and movie scenes in it. I read it in about 20 hours (over a span of 3 days). It was a really great book, but I kind of like the Kubrick adaption better. Whenever I would read about the hedge animals, I was like "come on, now!". I do like that the novel better explained Danny's shining though.

Also, if anyone is actually reading this, I noticed that one of the film stills included in the book is from a deleted scene where Wendy is cooking Jack the eggs. Makes me wonder what other stuff was cut besides the original ending. Apparently another scene that was shot and cut was the part where Jack finds the white photo album.

And don't forget that this will be screened tomorrow at 2:00PM at select AMC and Cinemark theaters!

“There were great gobs of scenes that never made it into the film. There was a whole strange and mystical scene in which Jack Nicholson discovers objects that have been arranged in his working space in the ballroom with arrows and things. He walks down and thinks he hears a voice and someone throws a ball back to him.” – Wendy Carlos discussing production of The Shining score, P447 Stanley Kubrick by Vincent Lobrutto

I picked this up last night for $7.99 at Best Buy and watched it - I have to say, for an older transfer/low bitrate VC-1 encode, it's pretty solid PQ-wise.

Yeah, it looks very good to great. The only scene that sticks out is the one with Danny on the floor and the cars and the tennis ball are pink instead of yellow. Other than that obvious error in color timing, everything else looks great color-wise (that I noticed at least)

I took advantage of the $7.99 deal at BB and watched it last weekend. After owning and watching the UK version for so long, I can't believe how much better the US version is. The slower pacing really makes the movie more exciting and suspenseful. I definitely like the US version better.

Agreed, colors were very strong and contrast seemed very well balanced. Detail was solid. My only small quibble was about some minor edge enhancement, but this disc looked better than expected for sure.

Funny. I grew up with the U.S. version and vastly prefer the more focused International Version.

Watched this last night for Halloween, still gives me the chills every time I view it.

But, has anyone noticed the a musical que in The Shining is the exact same que used at the beginning and throughout There Will Be Blood?

I mean, I know that TWBB was already Kubrickian in nature but wow! A double-feature is in order!

Another cool title to watch round Halloween time could be Donnie Darko. I just thought of that now for whatever reason. Does it take place at Halloween time? I forgot

I was able to attend the screening last week, and the image looked MUCH better than the Blu-ray. The only scenes that didn't were the opening scenes of the Torrence car. But everything else was most certainly 4K. I'm glad I chose AMC over Cinemark as their screens are larger. It felt very chilling.

And I was also able to finish Doctor Sleep yesterday over a period of 17 hours (a course of 4 days).
