Spicediver’s Alternative Version Redux is fantastic. A must-see. The only DUNE I’ll ever need.

I wish I could say the same for myself, but it's not quite what I want.

It certainly is! A flawed gem is how I have always described it.

To all the haters though I would say this - there are scenes in Dune (top of my head - the navigator sequence) which are just unlike any other sci-fi film past or present.

Its too much to hope for a 4K release but I would love Arrow to get this and do the best they can with it and a Waterworld type release would be great. I'd be first in line (after you most probably! )

The extended cut is definitely worth it if you're a fan. Not for the uninitiated though...

I just hate that Lynch has disowned it, but there's no undoing that. De Laurentis and Universal should be ashamed of making him cut and recut.

This really needs a new 4K scan if Universal decides to do a UHD. The current BDs and HD DVD use the 2K DI that was struck in 2005 for the 2006 DVD Steelbook. With a new 4K DI and HDR this could look downright gorgeous.

Yeah, that prologue is so rough it feels like a student film; 'hey, here's concept art to give you an idea what it would look like.' The clumsy battle edits, eye inconsistencies, etc. I'm more willing to give a pass, since I assume the network handed rough footage to its editing team and said, we need an extended cut - for broadcast next week!

Still, I always end up preferring the Smithee version, feels more epic, more like the novel, and characters like Patrick Stewart's Gurney Halleck actually get screen time.

Stewart really nails Gurney.

I watch movies so I don't have to read, no matter how good the book is! Last book I read was Lord of the Rings and it nearly killed me … and I do not recall much from the book.

I am also looking forward to the new Dune.

I like how MacLachlan and Prochnow are laughing at that point.

It's like they're thinking "dude you just called yourself an ass"

I don't know why. It gives a lot of backstory to the world, especially beneficial if you haven't read the books. But I can see die-hard Lynch fans wanting things to be vague and unclear.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Lynch fan myself, but I don't watch Dune and think it needs to be like his other films. I love both versions of the film, and I like his take on it, but I also like being able to understand the complex world of Dune rather than trying to make sense of it as if it was Twin Peaks in space. Not that I need everything spelled out and spoon fed to me, especially not at this point as both a Dune fan and a Lynch fan, but when I first saw the film, I was neither and that added prologue helped me appreciate the story a lot more. Plus, I like the pretty pictures.

My main problem with the Extended Cut is the awful sound mix; it robs so many scenes of impact especially the big battle where the music is drowned out where in the theatrical cut it is front and centre.

I did see this on 35mm today, print from initial release. Rather worn out and with constant scratches, mainly visible in bright scenes.

Most scenes leaned heavily towards green highlights, especially visible on teeth. It wasn't faded but many sequences in the same scene clearly had unbalanced timings. Some scenes looked really good while most... Just weird. The finale still held a good level for sure. Audio was also quite nice with some decent channel separation and depth.

Overall it was completely different than what I'd expect, nothing at all like the HD-DVD I saw last time. An interesting way to experience the film but for once I feel like I may have preffered a DCP actually. Still I must say I really appreciate the film even though it's clear that probably no one in the entire crew had an idea about what they were actually doing. Maybe that was for the best after all.

I would love to see this get a proper 4K scan at least for the theatrical cut. The HD DVD and BD both utilize the 2K scan done for the 2006 DVD steelbook.

Would love to see a 4k version. Lot's of cool visuals in this supremely underrated movie. And the current BD is just OK. Maybe a new set to piggy back on the Denis Villeneuve version.

I would only double dip on this movie if it included a commentary track from David Lynch.

The OOP 2 Disc DE set is marginally better with AVC and a higher bitrate, but yeah it just needs a new 4k scan.

one thing I have wondered for ten years. Who was the narrarator of the prologue

Finally found out. It's a guy named William Phipps. He voiced Prince Charming in Cinderella
