The 1999 TV movie directed by Rob Marshall is closer, though it still has some cuts and suffers slightly from its lower budget. It is still, in my opinion, a lot more charming than the 1982 movie.

Another person who apparently forgot...

Annie was originally a comic strip. Not a Broadway play.

This '82 film is more faithful to the spirit of the original comic strip.

Just not the political overtones.

Have to disagree. The taller straight-haired girl who played Annie in the 1999 film looked horror film scary and nothing like the Annie of the comic strip.

I really think Aileen Quinn and Albert Finney were far more adorable and charming in this 1982 film. They are to Annie what Christopher Reeve is to Superman. Just my opinion. Three examples of perfect casting.

if I wanted the comic strip I'd buy the Complete Little Orphan Annie books, I want the stage version... sheesh.

I prefer comics adapted to the big screen. They seem to have a pretty good track record.

The 1982 film has some wonderful musical numbers like the stage play, but seems more inspired by the Orphan Annie comics.

Again, minus the political overtones.

Not really. Although the comic strip leaned right, the 1982 film is politically neutral. The point is made, however, that Oliver Warbucks is a Republican who opposes the New Deal politics of Democrat Franklin Roosevelt (like he does in the comics) yet the two are friends which seems mostly due to the powerful positions held by each.

Be that as it may, this 1982 film is more faithful to Harold Gray's original comic strip than any other stage or film version of Annie to date.

Default The best Annie ever

Nothing beats Ann Reinking as Grace and 10 year old Aileen Quinn as Annie.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvq...ies_shortfilms

A glorious and faithful (to the comics) film. Unlike the new Will Smith produced incarnation.

Loved the days when studios would audition literally thousands upon thousands (in this case 8,000 girls) because they wanted to find that one special person who most embodied, most resembled the famed comic strip character. They really nailed it here.

Still the best, most faithful version of Annie and I imagine it always will be.

Is the 5.1 the real 70mm track (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083564...ef_=tt_dt_spec) or just a remix of the Dolby surround/stereo one?

Not sure. It differs from the dvd 5.1 Some sound effects are missing. Possibly, the dvd was from the 70mm and the blu from the 35mm.

This is coming to theaters in June 2020 via Fathom Events. Could this be a chance that Annie will be released on 4K?

I believe I saw it listed as a potential 4K candidate when Sony had that survey floating around, and considering Annie's an evergreen title for them that they like to re-release (just like Hook), it seems likely we'll get one at some point. Whether or not that's this year remains uncertain. I'd like for them to put the PBS "Light, Camera, Annie!" documentary on disc at last (their excuse for not putting it on the Blu-ray was that the original master is missing, but they can do what WB did with The Dreamer of Oz and just use a VHS backup copy, then). I'd also love to see the big outdoor production version of "Easy Street" if the footage still exists.

This version with Albert Finny and Carol Burnett is the BEST version available. However, I was VERY impressed with the Disney TV version with Kathy Bates as well. I would LOVE to have that on bluray.

For anyone monitoring this thread looks like we're in luck that Annie is coming to 4K... first release will be bundled in Sony Classics Volume 3:

It's being sold separately in some international markets too, like France:
