I don't think Kubrick cared for that art. I believe it is Kubrick who insisted that the shot of Jack through the door be the art for all video releases.

It was designed by Saul Bass, the greatest graphic designer to ever work in the movies. Apparently Kubrick chose it from 300 designs Bass did for the film. That said, I prefer quite a few of the other designs Bass did over the one that Kubrick picked.

Well, Kubrick had 100% control over the Warner laserdisc remasters and first "The Kubrick Collection" DVD set, including art. The shot of Jack is what was chosen for both, whereas original key art was chosen for the other films.

Here's my framed poster of The Shining in my room. Yeah, those folding lines suck, but an unfolded original 1980 poster of The Shining cost a price that I wouldn't pay..

That reminds me...my brother has a huge Shining poster in a really old frame - his friend got it from a pub I think. Might see if I can get it off him! Its not that one above though but Im pretty sure its an original.

I didn't know they modeled the Overlook after an actual hotel interior!!! That's so cool! I thought they simply used the exterior, and then did a whole scouting of the hotels in America, and decided to make a composite of the ideas they liked best.

So it's cool to know that there is a hotel that actually closely resembles the original Overlook set.

I've stated at the awahnee ... years ago ... I wish it was actually filmed there ... everything in the film seems larger ... same relative scales but more cavernous

I finally added this masterpiece to my collection today...picked it up at Best Buy. Was this film originally shot in 70mm? The transfer looks gorgeous!

I thought the atmosphere was nice and warm unlike the film, but there were just too many people there.

Does anyone know the exact production dates for this film? I can't find the info anywhere other than it shot for 200 days.

According to some sites, it began May 1978, and ended in April 1979.

Thanks. It seems kind of hard to peg down. When you look up The Shining production slate on google image search one pops up that says October 1979. I'm kind of under the impression it was shooting in 1978 and 1979 and possibly even into 1980. I know there was a fire at one point that I have read pushed back the start date of Raiders of the Lost Ark..which would make me think that it was being shot very close or well into 1980 at Elstree in England.
