GOOD!!!! the meta sh!t got absolutely ridiculous in scream3&4 its not fresh or clever now just extremely cheesy and forced
the meta opening in scream 4 is crap

obviously there should be a few references here and there but 3&4 took it into parody levels with characters making meta lines and jokes as they are dying
"you cant kill me I'm the killer"
"**** Bruce Willis"
"you cant kill me I'm gay"
characters chasing around like scooby doo after a fax machine just the whole Hollywood concept in scream 3 is so far removed from what scream 1 was a simple small town

when scream 1 needed to get serious with its horror it did that's what I want back again scream 4 didn't really achieve that other than the "I'm in the closet" setpiece IMO it was an improvement on 3 but I think it can do better

This is great news considering they went overboard in the last 2 films.

Make Scream scary again!

I have just bought Scream on blu-ray. Haven't seen it in YEARS. I kind of dismissed horror films in the 90s post Scream and I don't remember loving it (have seen all of them years ago though not in quick succession). I look forward to seeing the original again. I think I need to re-evaluate it.

The meta stuff at the time did grate a bit, but tbh, without any meta content it isn't Scream. That's what made it original, distinct and clever.

It went WAY too meta in 3 and 4 to the point of stupid misplaced comedy. I think it will get back to the vibe of the first two where it’s not leaning so much into the slapstick and comedy.

That's fair, I honestly thought there wasn't much in 3, or it's not as clever.

Just by having Jay and Silent Bob's cameo there seems to imply that the Kevin Smith movies are "canon"...

Yes, those were the days when Disney actually cared for their adult audience.

Scream and Scream 2 struck a perfect balance between true horror and self-referential comedy that was organic and not forced. Characters were fully realized and not caricatures - these were real, likable people who you did not want to see die. 3 and 4 failed at all of this (I know everyone creams their pants over Kirby but I found her annoying and felt she tried way too hard to be the hip horror chick).
I really believe Scream 5 will blow 3 and 4 out of the water with their handling of horror and the characters.

Not sure how i feel about this new film not being "meta", but i'm kind of interested in a more serious tone similar to the first movie.

There was also some pretty big news this past weekend where Kevin Williamson shared the fact that the Ghostface mask that was used in the first movie, during Tatum's death scene, will be used in a scene in the new film.

“...it does take a fresh approach...”

Wonder what they mean by that. It’s true Scream was the first self-aware slasher, so maybe they’re trying to make Scream 5 be parallel in that sense? As in, it’ll be the first slasher to do something that other slathers haven’t done yet? Can’t think of what that could be though.

The directors did a great job with Ready or Not so I’m optimistic either way.

I don't know about that. Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part VI was kinda self-aware. Wes Craven's New Nightmare was also meta. Scream just took it even further is all.

Let me rephrase that, Scream was the first slasher to do the self-awareness right while turning slasher tropes on their head and using that to develop the plot and characters.

Shame. Was hoping for a sort of meta reboot slasher (seeing as reboots are the the big thing with Halloween (2018), etc), with Sydney waking up to realize the films' continuity has changed. Maybe bring back Liev Schreiber or Jamie Kennedy (one of his few tolerable characters).

At the same time that meta opening at the beginning of Scream 4 was intolerable so maybe going anti-meta is the best way to go. Question then is will they forgo the black comedy tone of these films too. Just make it a straight brutal slasher film where only Sydney makes it out alive.
