Goosebumps.jpg
As someone who has never been much a fan of Jack Black, his casting as the beloved R.L. Stine had me concerned. I've just always seen him as one note in his delivery in many of his performances. That being said, Sony pegged him for this role perfectly. I honestly right now can't think of anyone else who could have done the role justice better. So kudos to the studio and casting directors and Black himself. In terms of the film itself, nostalgia factor was on point for me. It had a "Hocus Pocus" feel to it but wasn't overly aggressive in its familiarity or tone. "Goosebumps" is equally fun for the adults as well as the kids and I truly hope we see this turn into a franchise with each sequel following a different tale from the classic books we all remember. If it were me, "Goosebumps 2" would take the story away from the real-world and do the reverse where instead of the monsters escaping the books, somehow Stine and friends are sucked into the books themselves. That would be fun and a new direction as I definitely don't want to see this franchised where each film revolves around an escaped monster. We saw that, it worked now let's shift gears and keep it fresh. If you haven't yet, go check out the film and tap into your childhood. Enjoy! |

[Show spoiler] 10/19/15: -You're Next (2013): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tidy home-invasion thriller is, frankly, full of genre tropes you've seen many, many times before (scary masks! Boarding up the house and setting booby traps! People acting stupid!), but it's also engagingly nasty, with a prankish sense of dark humor and some real jolts along the way (the "clothesline" scene authentically makes me wince just thinking about it). It's a damn sight better than the inexplicably-popular Purge movies, mainly because it has no pretentions other than being a solid, meat & potatoes example of its horror subgenre, instead of some socially-relevant metaphor about How We Live Now. -In The Mouth Of Madness (1995): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of John Carpenter's few decent post-80's films, Madness features Sam Neill (excellent) as an insurance investigator looking into the disappearance of hugely popular horror author Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow), whose fiction has been stirring up disquieting news reports of mass hysteria and acts of violence from normal people. Tracking him down to the little Maine town of Hobb's End, Neill soon discovers that this initially charming little burgh is the epicenter of a potential invasion of "our" world from without by slavering, Lovecraftian monsters conjured by by Cane's imagination as he finishes what he promises to be his last book...one that will bring about the end of the world. The first hour or so of the film has a great build-up, and Neill is terrific, but the film kind of sputters out in the last third, with an apocalyptic finale that's hampered by the whole "This is not reality...!" movie-within-a-movie mindgames courtesy of Michael De Luca's screenplay. It's still a decent film with some effectively eerie moments, and it's far better than anything else Carpenter did after the 80's, but still could have been better. |

![]() ![]() I keep forgetting how cool this film is - futuristic, but also gothic and pulpy. Animation's pretty low-budget, but with the new Blu-Ray, I always forget how good the colors and detail can be. ![]() Still one of my top favorites - the action is awesome. It's a slick blend of sci-fantasy and gothic. The story has some interesting twists, animation is top-notch, and the whole thing is just plain cool. Shame the Blu-Ray's so dark. ![]() Second time ever viewing, and it's better than I remember. Definitely cheap-looking and silly, but it's also pretty fun that way. I love the practical effects they used. The UK Blu-Ray's pretty rough around the edges, but sharpness and detail are probably the best they can be. ![]() It's been years since I saw this - I forgot how hectic the editing is. It's always been the story that kept me from disregarding this as trash though - Jigsaw is a well thought-out villain, his deathtraps are diabolical, and the twistiness of the plot is pretty slick. ![]() Seen parts of it before, but I swear I never saw it beginning-to-end. Not always engaging, but it is well-shot and some parts are really freaky. lol, look at Stephen King playing the preacher. ![]() ![]() the goriest version of the tale by far, an odd mix that tries to be an homage to Hammer films and a classical romance but with contemporary slasher violence... this flopped at the boxoffice since audiences didn't know what to make of it-- years later, it's a decent horror flick, at times very good, others times slow and plodding with many scenes that just don't seem to know when to end.. editing not a strong point here. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() abby's halloween-a-thon... of HORROR! They're all gonna laugh at you Week 1 - [Show spoiler] Week 2 - [Show spoiler] Week 3 - [Show spoiler] ![]() 71. House of the Long Shadows (1983) - ![]() ![]() It's supposed to be a comedy horror film, though it's not funny and it's not scary or creepy. It just sort of... is. It's kind of like Clue, only not as memorable and there's no mystery (although there is a twist at the end of the movie). The whole reason for this movie's existence is to see Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and John Carradine (four of the biggest horror stars of all time), but truthfully they're mostly underutilized. They instead take a backseat to Desi Arnaz Jr. I understand the screenwriters were probably trying to have a fish out of water character for the audience to connect to, but I think it's fair to say that horror fans would have preferred one of the horror stars filling that role, or finding a younger horror star to fill that part. Christopher Lee gets plenty of time and he's wonderful as always, but Peter Cushing has absolutely nothing to do until he gets killed off. Vincent Price and John Carradine get a bit of attention, but don't do much of anything. It could be because the three of them weren't in the best of health at the time and needed to slow things down, but that just makes things a bit more underwhelming. It's the kind of movie that should have been done in the 60s, but unfortunately we get this unfunny comedy with a predictable plot. ![]() 72. Death Spa (1989) - ![]() The title really says it all. This is not the kind of movie you go into expecting it to be good. The only shocking thing is how bizarre it turns out to be. You see that title and you would think it might be a generic slasher with someone going around a health club killing people. But it's not. It's about the vengeful ghost of a woman who burned herself alive haunting a health spa that is controlled by supercomputers. The fact that they need computer programs for members to lift weights is just hilarious to me. What's the point? The health club looks very cheap. It doesn't even look like a real health club. It kind of reminded me of watching The Outing where it's just a bunch of bland sets where they throw props down and expect the viewer not to know the difference. Well, it didn't look like a health club to me, it just looked like cardboard walls that had a rowing machine. The death scenes are both confusing and gruesome. There seem to be no rules. A guy's hand explodes (which is great) and another has his face explode. I think a wooden beam was supposed to be poking through his face, but the editing was so poor that it wasn't clear what happened to him. The acting is very bad and this movie is so cheap that it seemed like they only had money for Ken Foree for only a day. He barely shows up. I don't think he was the most in demand actor, especially in the late 80s. It's a decent so-bad-it's-good movie, but there are much better you can be watching. ![]() 73. Hard Rock Zombies (1985) - ![]() This movie has ADHD. It is just all over the place. It's about a rock band that goes to a town where they are murdered, but then come back to life from a song that the band had recorded. Then the town becomes infested with zombies. But in the meantime, random stuff just keeps happening. A dwarf (played by Phil Fondacaro in one of his earliest roles) is running around, a random zombie is eating himself, a girl is dancing in the streets, and Hitler shows up. This sounds like something ripe for so-bad-it's-good, but it's more annoying than charming. The stuff I found most amusing was the terrible editing. Especially with the sound. Instead of ADR-ing some dialogue, they just kept the original recorded dialogue. This isn't always the worst way to go, but it's terrible when there is live music in the background that doesn't sync at all with the music the movie is playing. It's just noise, but it's so bad I actually was laughing. It's not a horrible watch, but you'll likely lose interest quickly. It would make a pretty good movie to have in the background on a Saturday afternoon, but not as much else. ![]() 74. Exorcism (1975) - ![]() A Paul Naschy movie where he has almost nothing to do. He's usually best when playing the monster. Here, he just seems bored and wasting time. It starts off promising, with LSD dropping satanic hippies. Then it quickly devolves to the possessed woman going around calling people "B****" and "Sons of b******." The middle drags on and on until we get a random satanic orgy in the middle of the movie. Then the movie slowly grabs your attention back for a bit before going back endless talk. And talk in these movies is pretty annoying. They run through dialogue so fast, trying to explain every single detail. This only becomes more bothersome if you watch these movies with subtitles since you'll be spending most of the time reading dialogue because they talk so fast. The ending gets a bit more interesting when the exorcism actually happens, and there is some nice makeup on the girl at the end, but it was too little too late. This is just a Spanish Exorcist ripoff that might seem interesting because of the satanic hippies and orgies, but it really isn't all the interesting and gets really boring really fast. |
