Things That Are Obviously Lynchian (And You Would Have To Be Blind Not To Notice):

The Snotty, Industrialised Guildsmen
The Dream Sequences (down to the moon opticals right out of Eraserhead)
Geidi Prime being an industrialised hellhole
The baron's doctor and his rhyming couplets
The baron's beautiful skin diseases
Thufir and his little cat and mouse
Jack effing Nance

Etc
Etc
Etc

Looks like Dune is getting a new remaster in France: https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B086PRL1LZ?...ogi&th=1&psc=1

Sadly not a word on 4K.

It's great that they're using the Renato Casaro cover.
Dune needs the Arrow treatment with all the different edits etc,I don't know if the rights allow that though.

I'm still hoping Universal will do a UHD release as a tie in for the new film.

Same here and I am betting it will happen because the current 2K scan is now nearly 15 years old. Universal knows Dune has a large following on home video even though it lost money at the box office in '84.

I think it will represent a tough fork in the road for them. Universal (and God bless ‘em for it) seem committed to offering their UHDs with all alternate cuts added, but DUNE presents an interesting, problematic case where David Lynch will neither agree to a director’s cut nor sign off on the extended cut.

Well, De Laurentis made the extended cut happen for DVD. We might see this happen again for the UHD.

And I'll buy it day one, if they do. Unfinished effects work aside, the extended cut is my DUNE of choice.

Mine as well. If you take out the repeated/flipped shots it's excellent IMHO.

The thing that bugs me the most about the TV cut isn't the flipped/repeated shots (although they're awful as well), it's the total butchering of the score.

Seriously... What the hell?!

I know that the director doesn’t want to do a director’s cut but couldn’t the studio add the extra stuff and release an extended edition?

Remember last summer when Kino Lorber tried to put out Lost Highway with a bunch of extras, the theatrical artwork, and a new 4K scan? For some reason, Lynch completely refused to cooperate or even talk to them at any stage of the production, only to make a social media post a few days before the disc was to be released (no extras, no new scan, and the old DVD artwork because Lynch didn't give permission for anything else), telling people not to buy it. I can only imagine the fuss he'd make if Universal was to do a new cut of Dune without his approval. He'd definitely demand to have his name taken off that version as well, and it would only stir up a bunch of negative press for the release.

If Lynch doesn't do it, then there's really no point. The best thing the studio could offer is the four hour rough cut as an extra (which I'd love).

How was he then fine with Criterion doing Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive?

Very odd

He had involvement with both of those releases (along with "Eraserhead").

I don’t think Lynch particularly cares what Universal does with Dune, and I don’t think he’d tweet out to fans hey don’t buy this or would it really affect sales of the inevitable UHD tie in release anyways.

As far as I know, the reason Lynch wouldn’t participate on Lost Highway was because Kino would not put up the money to restore it. They also commissioned the commentary without his permission and any lynch fan could have told you he wasn’t going to be okay with that

He doesn’t care about Dune, I don’t think he would forbid them from doing anything. He probably didn’t even oversee the original blu-ray.

Yeah the boutique labels can do whatever the hell they want with Dune, as Lynch disowned the entire venture years ago.

Lost Highway is a different story. He was rightfully hoping to work with Criterion for a restoration, but then Kino got the rights instead and everything went south.

Please remember that Universal has little to do with Dune other than distributing the end product. De Laurentis has the real say on Dune. The only reason the extended was even put on DVD was because De Laurentis allowed it.
