For a movie like Avatar, I don't want to plunk down cash if there are not a lot of quality extras. I want the behind the scenes scoop on this kind of movie, so I'll rent the barebones and wait for the better version later.

I'll get the combo pack, keep the blu-ray for myself and frisbee the DVD into my brother for him to enjoy.

dont know if this was post already...but Amazon has this up. 25 bucks is startin price. I will bite only if it is in 17-18 buck range. Dont need extras, only watch them once anyways.

Those are more the exception than the rule when it comes to "Collectors Edition". I do wish i jumped on getting the Dollhouse Comic-Con edition while it was on pre-order.

Someone mentioned about maximum bitrate allowed by BD specs up to 40Mbps only. Curious, I turned on the info while watching ID4 on my PS3. Is this even possible? 47.2 Mbps AVC:

So when Jon Landau said they wanna max out the quality by removing the menus, trailers, etc, and taking all the space on the BD50 disc, how high the bitrate can possibly go?

I'm not arguing about the necessity of having ridiculously high bitrate, just impressed with what I saw.

Sorry for the bad pic, taken with my iPhone.

EDIT:

Found the post:

Not that it matters cause a bitrate that high is completely unessesary for even 3D video. The only reason Blu-Ray has a maximum video bitrate beyond 25 mbps was so studios could choose to still use MPEG-2. With AVC and VC-1 bitrates above 25 megabytes per second is never ever ever ever nessesary for 2D 1080p video. Avatar can be given a gorgous perfect reference quality 2D presentation on Blu-Ray and still have about 20 gigabytes of empty space for extras.

I also asked him to back up his claim which he didn't, i've had bitrates over 50mbps.

On the other hand I don't want to pay for extras. I'd like the steel book version, but I could not care less about extras. I watched Top Gun and before that I watched the extras. Then when I watched the movie I just had all this crap in my head about, "oh I see now, that's so fake. I can't believe I didn't notice that before." No thanks! I'll never watch extras again except for really really old star trek original series.

I think he pulled the 40.0Mbps maximum (for video only) from the FAQ page here on blu-ray.com

Default So much for anticipation...

You won't be getting even a trailer or preview trailers fro other films on this initial release. You'll be lucky of the case isn't made or recycled fiberboard!
This is like waiting years for Snow White from Disney and only getting b/w storyboards and shadow puppets on the wall w/ a drunk dwarf giving a slurred commentary!

I was watching G4's ""Attack Of The Show" the other day and they said that Cameron/Fox "wanted to use the entire 50GB of the disc just for picture/audio" and it will be "the best looking and sounding Blu-Ray ever released".

Sounds like Sony's old "Superbit DVD" marketing. We'll see.
