This is a loose sequel or what I like to call a revamp. In continuity with others films but trying to do the series in a new way.

A reboot to me means new continuity and a remake is redoing a previous film.

They're "remakequels", where they purport to be sequels, but essentially remake the original movie.

Star Trek, basically every time James Bond is recast except for Craig being a full reboot, X-Men: First Class, Prometheus, Batman Forever, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jumanji etc

Begins is a full reboot. Forever keeps loose continuity and some supporting cast with the Burton movies, but recasts Batman and goes for a completely different tone and was a huge hit (second biggest film of 95 after Toy Story)

A YouTuber suggested they might be going the New Nightmare route where the movie takes place in the real world and Neve, Courtney, and David (playing themselves) help a group of teens when a real life copy cat killer is after them.

However, this doesn't really add up in my opinion.

I really don’t think they would do this. They have already confirmed in many interviews that the trio are playing their original characters and they talked about how the audience will be really happy with the direction they have taken these characters in. The directors and screenwriters are all huge fans of the franchise and the characters and there’s no way they would piss off the fans by robbing them of the chance to see these characters in action again.

YouTubers love to think they are cracking the case on theories but it’s all bullshit. Not to mention, if the actors are playing themselves then why is there a Woodsboro? Why is Dewey on the police force if he’s really David? Why is Marley Shelton a cop of she’s not playing Deputy Hicks? That whole theory falls apart when you look at just one or two behind the scenes photos with Woodsboro cop cars.

Well considering how uninspired and misplaced his score for Scream 4 was, I’m not mad at all. Plus, these directors want to relaunch the franchise and take it in a different direction - that should include going with someone different for the music too. They want to put their own stamp on the franchise and I support the change.

That sounds like a more meta plot of Scream 3. So it’ll only be redundant if that’s the case.
