I just seen that it's going to be in 1.78 aspect ratio, that sucks. This movie made my favorite list and now i don't get to enjoy it in 2.35 at home. O well at least i will have a copy i guess. Sorry i had to just get that off my chest.

What's the problem? Do you have one of those "constant height" setups?

If so, pay close attention to what Cameron said - he said they didn't pan and scan or change anything when they made the 2.35 version, they just cropped the top and bottom of the image to get that AR right out of the original 1.78 frame.

Therefore, I take that to mean anyone with a constant height setup can watch it 2.35 and not miss anything they saw in theaters.

Secondly, been watching a BD screener recently...feature is about 45GB of the disc...looks.....AMAZING! I never saw the 3d version though. given the little space reserved for warning cards and logos and such, I would pretty much agree with the "superbit" label.
AWESOME on both!!

The version I saw (IMAX) 2 times was 1.78:1 . The 2.35:1 version is cropped from the 1.78:1 version anyway. So you're better off with the 1.78:1 version.

I think it's gonna be a great BD release, 1.78:1 and utilizing almost the entire 50gb plater for just the movie, i can't wait. this will be the ultimate in reference quality. you know Cameron isn't just gonna release some crap; especially crap that made billions of dollars! I can only imagine how much they are gonna make off of the blu sales!?! I expect it to be the biggest seller of all time. does anyone know to date what the current biggest seller on blu is?...cause it's gonna get knocked off when Avatar hits the shelves!

Again, it's not cropped. If Cameron wants it released in 1.78:1, so be it, but arguing that it's better because you're seeing more of it is just plain wrong. It's like saying every movie shot in Super 35 should be in 1.78:1.

Actually the positioning of the HUD displays in scenes such as jakes videologs were moved into the 2.35:1 frame from lower down in the 1.78:1 frame

Is there been any news related to the actual packing of the movie?
Been earth day and everything related to the million trees, hope the packing is the standard blue case and not some recycle cardboard cheap packing.

I am betting we will see something new as far as packaging. I just hope it is something similar to a standard Blu Ray case.

If they don't do that you know it will at least be the "recycle" case.

The recycle case is something I can live with, but I really hate the cardboard packing.

I bet it's just a regular case with a slipcover.

The 2.35:1 framing was a compromise for standard 2-D theaters. The 1.78:1 ratio is the OAR in this case and is one that is preferred by the director. End of story.

Default The Avatar Blu-ray Release Thread

I wonder whats up with claims of the best video quality ever.

How good can it possibly be. I know its a straight transfer from digital to digital, so it'll be just like an animated movie. Besides most of Avatar is an animated movie.

I'll wait for the reviews to come out as I didn't like the movie at all. If I get the disc, it will only be for the video quality.

Pre-ordered at Best Buy, now just anxiously waiting

I had to wait a couple of days to pre-order on Bestbuy.com because when the pre-order started you could not tell it you wanted to pick it up in store. However I was able to do that the Monday after. I wonder if they are going to do a midnight release, and if so, can I pick up my pre-ordered copy at midnight???
