Put your link back in your signature JCO, I'm not removing mine. There's nothing wrong with providing a link in a forum that is related to that link.

Frankly, that's the first time I have ever seen someone complain about a related link in a forum.

"Avatar," Runtime Talk

By Garth Franklin Friday June 5th 2009 08:27AM (www.darkhorizons.com)

One surprising bit of talk that has emerged in the past day over James Cameron's "Avatar" is the film's runtime.
Cameron's films have generally had theatrical cuts of around 140 minutes with one or two exceptions like "The Terminator" at 108 minutes and "Titanic" at 194 minutes.

The other day a posting at Film Crew T-Shirt suggested a 189 minute runtime and the story got picked up and widely spread thanks to a /Film posting.

Former CHUD submissive turned /Film dominatrix Russ Fischer followed-up with "Avatar" producer John Landau at the E3 video game convention yesterday and Landau confirmed that it is "definitely over two and a half hours".

I'm not going to post any Avatar news here since I'm giving the AE forum updates and you got this one covered, share the workload

On to next topic regarding Avatar and Blu-ray...

I think this will be interesting how this plays out. As you all may have already heard, Cameron's goal is for Avatar to be the first 3D Blu-ray. The big obstacle is the standardization and Panasonic has an agressive campaign going for that.

What do you BR hobbyists think? Can you see BR3D making a presence in your collection?

Yea, Journey/Center/Earth, Polar Express, and Bloody Valentine all are 3D, but it's the old school anaglyph.

I wrote a review on the Journey 3D BR DVD (Hope the member barking at JCO about "peddling" doesn't see this post because I am about to post a link to the review... ) Journey/Center BR3D Review, it's at the bottom of the page.

You can read it or here is a quick and dirty recommendation - don't bother spending the extra money, the 2D version is much richer in visual quality. I didn't even finish watching the entire 3D version because its skews the colors beyond enjoyment.

ooh gotcha

i think i'd give the 3D avatar blu a try if it got made since i'll only be seeing it in 2D in the theater and i'd like to see what it's like, but if i didn't like the 3D i'd buy a 2D blu version of it if its offered

unless it was in the same package, which would be kind of cool

Editor’s (Peter Sciretta) Note: Brendon filed this report yesterday, but I wasn’t initially willing to run it based on an unconfirmed source on a Twitter account. But since that time, /Film’s Russ Fischer was able to follow-up with Avatar producer John Landau, who made an appearance at the Ubisoft booth during the E3 video game convention. Fischer asked about Avatar’s running time, and Landau confirmed that it is “definitely over two and a half hours.”

The reason why I had my doubts is that the film is being released theatrically in 2D, Digital 3D and IMAX 3D, but the latter format does not allow for three-hour films. I contacted IMAX, and they confirmed that the longest a non-digital 3D presentation could run is 160 minutes, and that is with two separate film reels, one for each eye. I asked IMAX if they would be forced to cut down Avatar if the finished film ran 3 hours in length, and they said they’d get back to me — which of course, they never did. When IMAX first began screening theatrical upconversions, the maxium running time was shorter, and I do recall one of the Harry Potter films being shortened a few minutes of the IMAX presentation. So it is possible that the same thing might have to be done for Avatar.

You can read Brendon’s original report, which claims a finished running time of 189 minutes (or three hours and nind minutes) after the jump.

Brendon’s Report begins:

According to the threadmeisters at Film Crew T-Shirts, the running time of James Cameron’s Avatar is going to be… drum roll please… 189 minutes. How would they know? Well, I assume they’ve fostered some strong relationships with members of, quite obviously, film crews, and furthermore that one of these folks is a crew member on Avatar. Far from impossible.

Everything I know about Avatar suggests a 189 minute run time will still require a brisk pace and some tight editing to get all of the different narrative threads spun out neatly. Titanic ran over 5 minutes longer and, relatively speaking, that was a straightforward story that took far less exposition just to get the premise clear in people’s minds.

Interestingly, James Cameron has had a few bouts of crew friction that flared up into Blade Runner style T-shirt wars. On Terminator 2, the crew made shirts that said “”You Can’t Scare Me - I Work For Jim Cameron.”

More recently, Sam Worthington raffled off an Avatar t-shirt that gave us the first definite look at artwork from within the production. It showed a silhouette of a Na’vi character and contained the film’s logotype, which we’ve now seen in all subsequent promotions.

I don’t think Cameron would be the kind of guy to buckle and let anything other than his director’s cut, no matter how long it is, be the theatrical release. I can’t imagine he’ll be accepting a run time ceiling on his final cut contract. Sure, Aliens was released in a cut down version, and I’m still not entirely clear on whether the longer Terminator 2 was Cameron’s preferred version or not, but those were both released before he was made King of the World.

Many of the recent posts on the Film Crew T-Shirts Twitter feed have been about Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey, on the set of which they witnessed some car stunts, and GI Joe, about which they revealed nothing, gagged by an NDA. While they retain their anonymity they stand a very good chance of digging up some really good scoopage.

Well if they follow suit as the previous 3D BRs, it will have both the 2D and 3D formats, it will just cost a little more.

The big obstacle is standardization and hardware. Once again manufacturers are going seperate directions in developing which could cause another format war like BR/HDDVD.

Here's some articles following the progress of this 3D at home development....

There are WAY too many hurdles to release Avatar with the updated 3D. There is currently no standardized hardware - most current Blu-ray players and TV's can't view it.

It would have to be the most amazing ground breaking 3D ever to get the industry to move at more than a snail's pace implementing 3D tech. And even JC seems to say that it is not the 3D that is revolutionary in his film (although there will be some great shots) - but rather, the cameras and techology used to film it. It a technological revolution for directors, not the viewers.

Alas, I expect we'll get the red and blue glasses version at the most when it come to Blu-ray, as they've done with other 3D blu-rays.

I will be seeing this in 3D in the theater, though - can't wait!!!
