Excuse me for not continuing this little debate, but I'm a little bored trying to justify myself to you. Sheesh.

Using The Day the Earth Stood Still as an example as to whether Jaden is a good actor or not is really not fair. He was 9 or 10 when the movie was made, and it was more the character itself than him that was annoying for a good portion of the movie. I hate to add more to the argument since it's already kinda getting out of hand, but I think this needed to be said. It's been a while since I've seen The Pursuit of Happyness, so I can't judge him there. When I see this though, which will possibly be a blind buy, it will be a better way to judge his acting abilities. Still, he's 12 now, so there's still plenty of time. If he even comes close to his father, I'd be thrilled.

Good points. Even in the Pursuit of Happyness which was an excellent film he was even younger and played a lil kid and I think he did just fine for what he played and his age. The Karate Kid will show u his acting skills and whats to come from him. Got Em!!

Soooo this movie gets a 4.5/5!! Guess I'll have to see it before I can tell the reviewer how wrong he is.. It's not even Karate!! It's wu shu.. Lets get close, & just say the matrix/Kung Fu kid.. The Karate Kid never needed a remake. The original is a classic.. This is just a sad attempt to put Smith's son in a film that was almost guaranteed to make money.. Albeit, it did make more then I thought it would.. But seriously.. Did any other actor besides Jaden have a chance at the role.. He has the Athleticism that Ralph never had, but is too young for the part, & his acting is a level below Ralphs.. I'm sure I can enjoy this film for what it is, but 4.5 seems way too high.. I could be wrong.. I just loved the original & felt no need for a remake..

It was just so painfully jarring to watch Ralph's cheesy and poor techniques win on people with many many times his skill and experience. Jayden wasn't the best but at least had some decent athletic training to cover up many of the technique flaws he had. I like the original Karate kid, it was part of my growing up, but it doesn't negate the fact that I enjoyed the new one as well. Both are different films and stand on their own legs. I'm not saying that you should like them, but this constant harping on reviewers tastes and opinions on movies is getting ridiculous, as Dirty harry said, "Opinions are like a$$holes. we each have one and think everyone else s stinks"

(although I'll agree with you about "The Lovely Bones"... Holy crap was that a turd IMO!!!!)
Still more believable then that matrix kung fu crap.. Ralphs flaws made it more authentic. He wasn't a fighter. That was the point. He was a over achiever.. That rose beyond his lack of skills with will & his guts.. & maybe his stance was bad, cause the director wanted it that way?

I think that's the crux of the situation for the hate. I always felt that the Karate Kid (original) was a fairly decent but mediocre film. Even though I grew up in that era the only thing that really makes the movie any good is the nostalgia factor.

lol, nah, the director wasn't trying to get his stance that way. The referee in the film's tournament is one of the 3 founders of my personal style that I've trained in for 15 years. He has many stories of the making of the Karate kid that, some including how poor Ralph just couldn't athletically do what they wanted him to do and just had to make the best of it.

Amateurs like that don't make it through guts and will power with lack of skills. they get obliterated in one or two rounds, believe me I've seen enough good and bad technique and enough under trained fighters in a tournament. Guts and willpower are great among two evenly matched or nearly evenly matched fighters but a rookie against a skilled opponent.... it' can only get you so far.

That whole paragraph could be applied to the remake too. At least in the original he was fighting a bunch of jock bro white kids, which made it a little more believable.

In the remake he beats Chinese kids that probably have been training their whole lives while he trained for what, a few weeks, maybe a month?

oh yeah, I totally agree, That's the main weak point of BOTH movies IMO. It's kinda ridiculous that in 2 months or so a kid who knows jack crap can beat a national level tournament. But, Like I said earlier, I enjoy both films hokeyness and all. Just didn't see the hate for the new one being that they were both cheesey yet fun in their own unique ways. My whole beef with Ralph was he looked so bad doing it that I was constantly drawn out of the movie (It comes with the territory when you've be in MA too long and you end up yelling "oh come on!, he's totally open!!" at the screen while you're wife is glowering at you )

Is this worth a blind buy? I love the Karate Kid Trilogy but not sure if I'll like this one.
