Well, here goes.

Now, having said that, I don't think 2 movies are necessary in order to tell this story in grand fashion. A 2 1/2 hour movie would do just fine imo. I think the split will happen either when:
[Show spoiler]1) Peeta strangles Katniss
2) Katniss gets shot
3) Prim dies
They need new story elements and characters to make this whole "2 movies thing" work. But I hope they don't screw it up with lame and unnecessary stuff, that doesn't make any sense at all. Here's hoping for a grand finale!

I agree with what you said about Mockingjay, a very realistic and good portrayal of what might really happen while still giving us a glimmer of hope that things can get better. I don't get why people would begin reading a book about a society where kids kill kids on reality TV and expect a fairy tale ending. Suzanne Collins says it best:
"This is not a fairy tale; it’s a war, and in war, there are tragic losses that must be mourned."

Katniss getting shot is about 3/4 to 4/5 through the book so it will be about halfway through the last movie and is not really a logical cliff-hanger ending. Still not sure why so many people hated the ending.
Katniss and Peeta were always going to end up together, it was pretty obvious from the beginning
All-out war had broken out so characters people cared about were going to die, yes even victors and Prim.
Gale is a douche, were we really expecting a happy ending for him where he ended up with Katniss or was nice to her? I wasn't.

[Show spoiler]I don't get on why her getting shot isn't a 'proper' cliffhanger, heck they should be trying to avoid a cliffhanger as much as possible, especially after the small backlash at Catching Fire's cliffhanger.
The amount of pages do not equate to the same amount on screen, a shit ton goes on in the second half so you can't say the exact half point of the book will be the same for the movies, because it won't be.

Why does the movie need to be gory to give justice to the book? That'd be over glamorizing the violence and gore, which is suppose to be the complete opposite of what the books are speaking out about.
As long as the emotional impact is there (as seen in Catching Fire - there is little to no gore but the impact is there).

They're filming those in Atlanta in a studio.

It's a little too obvious with everyone expecting it and thinking it's a good cliffhanger. It's more of a wtf cliffhanger than a good one.
Non-book readers will be watching this movie of Katniss becoming the Mockingjay and trying to fight the Capitol while desperately wanting Peeta back and end the movie with getting him back and choking her?
I don't know I just kinda hope it's not it especially for time reasons with how they'll manage to fully develop the process of changing Peeta back in the last movie. It feels like more of a climax to me for the first part.
But there's also this person on tumblr who apparently has an inside access on info regarding the movies right now and has been answering people's questions about Catching Fire and Mockingjay. So far they've been right about everything for the most part. They've read the script for Part 1 and said it won't end with Peeta choking her.
(But who knows it could probably change )

[Show spoiler]The ending of Peeta choking Katniss is a little too jarring too. You need to provide full resolution to what Mockingjay Part 1 will be about - which right now is saving Peeta. Then you see the aftermath, and then begin setting up the fourth and final film.

Again, half the book =/= half of the two parter films.

Think we're all talking about Part 1.

And now we have The Hobbit in 3 parts. Won't be too long before we see Part 4

|
[Show spoiler]I don't think his death was handled poorly. One of the small disadvantages of having a book in first person is that you have to stay in Katniss's thoughts and where she's going. And in that moment, she's in the middle of a warzone. There are mutts everywhere, time is ticking. There's no time for her to go to Finnick and mourn over his death like she did with Rue, she has other things to worry about.

District 13 is being filmed in studios in Atlanta, and the Capitol battle scenes are being filmed in Europe. And yes, won't be too surprised to see Josh popping up again after he's done with MJ. He's shown to be a very versatile and great actor, he'll be a pretty sought out actor.

I love the idea of 2 movies.
