Warner doesn't have it anymore

Ah yes, the Regency situation. It's curious that someone at the WBShop Facebook page still posted about this release 'recently' though?

As far as UHD BD is concerned, at least Fox has already given us an indication that they will not only likely be supporting the format but also what their first titles may be.

Kingsman is great but I'm not rebuying it for a subtle improvement any time soon. They should open with stuff like the Die Hard remaster or whatever.

Where's the "Thumbs down" button?

I think I may use this news as a rationale to at least reconsider getting the Steelbook. Funny how the psychology/pathology works sometimes.

Ha... I mean, everyone is different, but modern films aren't going to push me to 4k. Exclusive remasters of classics will.

Clearly they are going to release those titles which have the most show-off "pop" first. And that might not be a bad thing with some of these discs playing at Best Buy or Magnolia on UHD HDR panels. They will get people's attention.

I'm still unsold on 4k itself getting anyone's attention. Mainstream consumers barely care about the difference between DVD and BD, let alone 4k. The key is the master itself, IMO, and Kingsman obviously already looks amazing because it's a modern film. Die Hard, scanned in 4k from the OCN, would blow my socks off a lot more (though even then the UBD aspect would be artificial exclusivity, because it would look almost as good on BD).

I'd give UBD's odds of being mainstream like 1 in 10, if that. To get niche loyalty they need remasters of classics artificially made UBD exclusive.

I constantly see the 4K's at stores like Best Buy and I continue to be unimpressed. Not that 4K isn't good, it's just more of a incremental update at this time. The transitions from VHS to DVD to Blu-ray in terms of resolution have been the biggest bangs, with VHS to DVD being the real game changer. I have no doubt that 4K will look fantastic when 100-120 inch screens are out. 4k just doesn't make the impact on anything lower. It just doesn't. Quite frankly, plain old 1080p screens at 55 inch or so that are OLED look far better than 4K in their own way. Unfortunately, OLED has motion issues, but it certainly has captured the richness, be it the color and black levels, of plasma.......

Here's a serious question. I like the look of OLED in stores. It looks sooo good. However, the only OLED screen I have experience with is the one on a Sony Playstation Vita. Screen looks great, until the environment is dark and the image on the screen goes black. Then you see some minor splotches! Is this still an issue with OLED panels? I love the rich color, but I watch movies in the dark and I don't want to see splotches in dark scenes!

UHD BD has a tall mountain to climb to survive and if they are requiring (idiotic) online authentication, that will make it even harder. To me, it's mostly in the studios' hands to make it survive or not.

But UHD BD is going to destroy what anyone has seen in UHD up to this point - especially eye candy movies with HDR. I think it has better potential this way. Resolution is only a part of UHD. P3 will offer notably better color than rec. 709, 10 bit and greater range, and H.265 will all help too.

I think the format can live for a while as a niche.

Real UHD hasn't been seen yet. UHD BD is going to be noticeably better.

Apart from the shootout scene, Ifound Heat to be mostly boring.

I much rather get a SEVEN 20th Anniversary 4K remastered.

Oh yeah, I am not saying UBD isn't better, of course it is. And as a videophile I am sure I will appreciate and notice those differences when I eventually upgrade. I am just saying in a market that doesn't see BD as a worthy upgrade to DVD and is heading more and more strongly down the streaming rabbit hole I see UBD having no chance at the mainstream. Zip, zero, nada. So the question really is can UBD build up enough of a niche audience to survive before it's mercy-killed? Will it have the sales needed for Criterion, Scream, etc. to release UBD titles?

If UBD uses online authentication DRM of any kind I won't be supporting it, sadly, so hopefully it does not. I would also hope it fails in that case, since it would likely have exclusive remasters and features I would rather see on normal BD with no DRM.

1 in 10? Far too generous

I revised it to "zip, zero, nada" in the post right before yours.

Ditto. And I'm not waiting for another edition of "heat." I own the steelbook. I'd rather have it while it is cheap and readily available. No telling if Fox does a better job than Warner—I highly doubt it. Like the other Regency titles going OOP via Warner, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I hope This is a big error. It makes no senmse that Warner plans a Anniversary Edition and the rights switch to Fox.

I hope Warner make a 2 disc Digibook with the original poster as cover and a new encode or maybe a new 4K transfer.

All depends on the cost of replication and such at the beginning. Only the modern blockbusters will hit UHD at first, followed possibly by only the biggest franchises (maybe Jurassic Park, BTTF, etc). Hopefully something like Lawrence of Arabia could make it there, but I just don't see studios paying to make the discs when a 4K download or streaming option would save them millions.
