IV: Fox has all distribution rights indefinitely.

Still, it's likely Fox and Disney will work something out regarding future box sets.

Well, it seems that there's definitely plans for films continuing the timeline beyond Episode IX, although we'll have to see what happens.

And then you have the Star Wars anthology films (Rogue One, etc.) taking place in various points of the Star Wars timeline, so it's hard to tell if they would be part of a box set.
They should definitely keep all 9 saga films together that involves the Skywalkers. As for the standalone films they should put them in a separate collection to themselves.

So I'm guessing this movie will probably get an April 2016 BD release or a May 2016 BD release ?

I wonder how Lucasfilm'll sell this. Will they do the Marvel thing and do a standard 2D/3D release with complimentary commentary and light featurettes? Or will they go all out like they did with the Prequel DVD home releases, providing some kind of collector's edition with a feature-length doc?

Saw a new preorder package at walmart and fye gets you the digital copy on amazon or vudu and 3 poster prints. Grabbed one as I was gonna get the vudu anyway.

That was Fox with the prequel DVDs. Disney doesn't really do collector's editions like that, and I would expect all Star Wars releases to more or less match the Marvel releases in style and content.

Couple of questions;

Where is the best place to pre order this right now? And second do you think they will release the original trilogy unaltered?

TFA is gonna have 3D, no reason for it not to. If Marvel and Pixar are releasing 3D discs while under the Disney banner, LFL will, too. Star Wars + 3D will sell too many discs for them not to. The pre-order listings are unreliable.

Because I have separate trilogy releases for the PT and the OT, I might just hold off on buying Eps. VII-IX until the trilogy release in 2019. Not too much of a wait, plus there will be consistency. Unless there's some really incredible Steelbook or a bonus disc, I think I can hold out. I think...

I how it does. I just have this feeling that Disney will wait to release all the films in a 3D set. Of course a lot has to happen for that to transpire.
I will just be happy with any form of VII in my collection!

Why would they wait? I'd be very shocked if Disney/LFL said "One of the biggest movies ever? Guaranteed home video juggernaut? Could jump-start 3D sales that we can make even more money out of? Nah, we'll sit on it."

I honestly am more concerned about them including the Jakku/Falcon sequence with the expanded IMAX aspect ratio, either on the 2D or 3D disc (preferably both).

Hopefully this will come out sooner rather than later. I'm hoping no later than April 2016.

I saw the digital pre-order in stores and I was almost tempted to get that too... just to have the posters :P

Wow, yeah I REALLY hope they don't release it with shifting aspect ratios. That's totally distracting to me.

why would you say that. They would be in for some serious complaints and even losing money if they did not showcase how good this was on 3D by releasing the 3D Blu-Ray. It would also be a damn waste

exactly and JW 3D BD confirmation did also come later than the regular release. To not release this fantastic 3D job on 3D Blu-Ray would make a lot of people pissed and it would be a waste and they would lose money if they didn't

Hey, I hope it happens!
I'm just using history as my guide, and it seems like the SW franchise will make money no matter how it's released. To date, one could say that a good deal of money has already been left on the table. Will that trend continue? I guess we will find out in a very short while.

Also, supposedly a lot of people are already pissed.
See: Trilogy, Original, Unaltered.

Is it because you have a CIH display, or you just don't like the AR changing every few minutes? Just curious, since in TFA it's only one (relatively brief) sequence it looked very good.

I've been seeing this in stores everywhere...
Best Buy, Target, WalMart even Toys r us.

I wonder if people (the general public) are aware that it is only a digital copy

Heard a neat little tidbit this morning about TFA. Daniel Craig was near where they were filming and called someone about appearing in the film no matter the part and they told him to come in. He's a Stormtrooper in one of the parts!
