I know for sure Gary Oldman's Winston Churchill movie will get a bunch of nominations, especially since he appears to totally disappear in the role.

In fact, the media tends to label the last quarter of the year as "Oscar Season" now because of this practice.
I don't know about that being new to recent years. November/December has been considered "Oscar season" when the vast majority of award contenders come out for decades... since at least the 80's/early 90's, probably longer. And as shown earlier, there have still been several winners that came out in the first half of the year. Yes, studios hold most of their Oscar bait until the end of the year - I am just saying it is not a new phenomenon.

Warner Bros. could find themselves in a tricky spot come campaign time if they're not careful. With Wonder Woman, Dunkirk, and possibly Blade Runner 2049 they could have three contenders in various categories and they'll probably be forced to spread it thin unless they feel Dunkirk doesn't need that much push.

I'm intrigued by the Weinstein Company this year. They have Mary Magdalene(Universal handling distribution) and The Current War coming in the fall and both have solid foundations of talent aboard.

I have to say this could shape up to be a tough year again.

I'm fascinated to see how The Papers turns out. That could be a big winner if the subject matter and the cast are any indication. And of course, Spielberg.

I'm intrigued by this one as well, Josh Singer of Spotlight wrote the script and he seems to be good with this kind of material.

Yeah, Spotlight was top notch.

And having Hanks, Streep, Alison Brie, Sarah Paulson, Bruce Greenwood -- you're already a number of steps ahead of the competition.

I guess the term being new depends upon your perspective. You are correct in that the "Oscar Bait" season that occurs at the end of the year has been pretty much going on since the late 80's or early 90's but I have been going to movies since I was kid in the fifties. I also grew up in the entertainment business (my parents were in it) and I have been making my living in this business all my life so I have been around the Oscars issue for a very long time. I vividly remember when there wasn't an "Oscar Bait" release schedule like we know it today so it probably seems like a more recent phenom to me than others. It might have helped if I qualified where my thought process was coming from on this issue.

I also believe that home video may have helped to change how studios handle their "Oscar Contender" films. Before home video, films that were released earlier in the year were re-released by studios to run in multiple theaters again towards the end of the year in an attempt to remind voters of their possible Oscar potential. While this is still done today to a certain extent, it is nothing compared to years ago when there was no disc or streaming cycle with which to re-expose an earlier released film.

I can also remember when the summer movie season, in the pre-Jaws era, wasn't considered blockbuster season like it is now. Jaws, in 1975, changed all that forever.

As I said in the BR2049 thread, this is the only one I really care about. It's ridiculous that he's been nominated 13 times and never won. His work is amazing.

He should have won for Skyfall but lost to Life of Pi. But then again, many people have been nominated over the years and have yet to win.

Ghost in the Shell deserves to be a strong contender for Best Visual Effects, and nominated for Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Mixing.

In reality it's probably not going to be nominated for anything after the way it was initially received, because the Oscars seem weighted towards 'prestige' films instead of an objective technical appraisal...

mother!

A lot of people online seem to be going crazy about this. Even though nothing is really known and think it will get nods after nods.

Shockingly myself. I don't know about that. But we'll wait and see.
