I guess I will get the Best Buy's 4K Steelbook. I haven't watched it but it seems it is as good, if not better than Wonder Woman unlike the other DCU that I didn't like at all (hated actually).

I also love how WB does the home releases of these movies unlike Disney that ruins the home releases (at least audio wise) for movies I absolutely love.

Yeah I know, I was just talking about domestic. I was guessing 50 million opening, World wide success is also surprising.

Worst case scenario is that the film makes most of its money overseas. The budget is reported to be anything from $160-$200 million however, so the film needs to make $500 million WW at least to definitely hit the profitability mark; probably $600 million just to be safe.

Presuming the film doesn't completely collapse at the box office, a sequel is probably secure despite having the lowest opening weekend for the DCEU. Even if it makes less than Justice League at the box office, it'll be a bigger success for WB due to its much lower budget.
Does it really have THAT much smaller a budget?

Anyway I'm not worried about profitability, obviously overseas will take care of that either way. I'm more pointing out how amusing the media is. Batman v Superman and Justice League were hated by some before they even came out, because of their look, tone and director. So even though those movies made more money they were treated like total bombs and failures. This movie is making much less domestically and probably less overall, but is being treated like a mega-hit. It's just interesting to me how the media frames perception.

Batman and super are 2 of the biggest superheros and BVS was the first movie to have them together, So the expectations for that were much bigger than an Aquaman movie.

And for Justice League, no explanation needed.

Thats not fair to judge a movie that gets released in December that isnt Star Wars.

Well yeah it is a much lower budget. Batman v Superman had a $250 million budget (although it has been rumoured to be more) and Justice League had a $300 million budget. Aquaman has, at the very most, a $200 million budget. If we use the general "2.5x Production Budget to profit" rule, it means Aquaman has to reach $500 million while BVS had to reach $625 million and Justice League had to reach $750 million.

So Aquaman's opening on a $200 million budget isn't bad at all. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opened about $10 million lower, will close at about $650 million and has only labelled a minor disappointment and that had a $200 million budget. Aquaman might have only had a $50 million smaller budget, but that's like a $125 million difference in terms of profit and WB will be walking away with more in their pocket with Aquaman than Batman v Superman despite it making less. Even if Aquaman collapses at the box office over the next few weeks (unlikely), it will still be more profitable than other DC films. It's not really anything to do with media framing perception, it's just that Aquaman was in a much better position financially to begin with along with Wonder Woman (which had a budget of $150 million) and Suicide Squad (which had a budget of $175 million) unlike Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League.

Plus Aquaman is just a solo superhero film and not a team-up, so the stakes are much lower. If Aquaman had been a team-up film with either Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash or Cyborg, its current box office would be seen as very underwhelming. As it's just an Aquaman standalone film, its box office is fine.

Plus "Aquaman does fine at the box office" just isn't an interesting headline while "WB's answer to The Avengers is a critical and commercial flop" is.

The 2D prime presentation was much better than the 3D for me. There were a lot of scenes where I could barely even see the background landscapes because of the much, much darker picture of the 3D. And there seemed to be a kind of soap opera effect with the 3D that was distracting in addition to the eyestrain. The 4k should be nice.

I don't think it's different enough to justify the radical difference in media response.

I get why Warner's expectations would be different, but again I'm more talking about how it's being presented. It's the tone and verbiage of the media coverage I am mocking, not the movie or its profitability. It's simply amusing to me that sites used hyperbole to call X and Y an utter disaster and are using hyperbole to call Z a massive success. It shows what their goals are, and is interesting from a "media shapes society" point of view.

Given my job/education I can't help but find this stuff interesting and have a natural predilection to point out to people how they're manipulated.

Saw today in IMAX...was supposed to be 3d but the theater's 3d apparatus broke this morning. Beautiful looking film and aside from some nitpicking, thought it was a very entertaining movie. Really appreciated the world building in the various set pieces, even stunning at times. Wish the 4k release would be in Dolby Vision, but doesnt look like it's the case. I think the 3d version is going to be awesome and preordered from amazon germany. Will also pick up in 4k...

Why?
Except for Crazy Rich Asians (a last minute add at that) Warner's recent releases have been Dolby Vision.

Watched Aquaman and Bumblee over the weekend. Both were great movies but, like I enjoyed Bumblebee a little more. Either way, getting both on day 1.
