Nothing will ever replace the joy of going to the cinema. Certainly the economics of Hollywood and the increasingly obnoxious person at the theater can diminish it, but it will never be replaced. A few years ago a huge 150mm screen theater closed in my city and an era ended, but the new digital screens with stadium seating has helped ease my pain. I do not typically like going to the theater away from home, as I do not know how good the theater is or how unruly the patrons are, but going to the movies will never be replaced by home theater (and my home theater is very nice).

There is a new theater by my house that has the new all Digital/DLP projectors. Looks and sounds amazing too.

I adore cinema -- hey, I wouldn't be a professional film critic if I didn't -- but getting a quality presentation is becoming well-nigh impossible these days. And not only in multiplexes, where the operator's post is often just a notch away from a burger-flipping career: I've been to plenty festival screenings where things like keeping the picture in focus and playing the rolls in sequence seemed to be a lost art.

Which is why I'm such a fan of the hi-def format -- I get to set up my own cinema, and screen the films properly. I know this is usually a game that tech enthusiasts play, but I'm in it for the love of motion pictures first and foremost. It's been a long wait, but nowadays I can finally control my own cinemagoing experience.

And I can't tell you how good that feels.

not only is BD killing it, but the ability to watch a movie in 1080/24p is bringing the massacre to it....I can't believe how much better it looks on the Sony at best buy with 24p.....it makes my 1080p LCD look like a SD...atleast IMO

I agree, that is why I never go to the theaters, rather build up my collection for the same price. I have'nt watched Resident Evil 3 yet, and I know it will be much better at home versus a theater expierence.

I am sorry, but I have a very nice home theater as well. With my Pioneer Elite receiver and high end Klipsch speakers, the sound is better than the cinema. But in no way is a home experience ever going to replace going to the movies. Sure there are things I dislike (unruly people and the commercials (which some Blu-ray force you to watch)), but if you know your theater you can avoid many of these issues. Surely there are places where the local cinema is so bad that staying home is preferable, but there are many things that never can be replicated: the size of the screen, the reaction of a good crowd, the taste and smell of the popcorn (yes, it is expensive), getting out of the house, etc., etc. There are even some places like the Orpheum in Memphis that show classics like Gone with the Wind after an organ player, cartoon, and serial. The sound is 2.0 and it is not a digital screen, but the experience cannot be missed. I can't think of the name of the theater, but the gigantic 150mm screen theater near the zoo in Washington D.C. is another place to expeience film. I just think that if you truly love movies, the home experience is just a part of it, but thanks to Warner Brothers, it is about to get much better.

I have a 100" front projection HT, but I still like being social and going out to the Cinema. With Blu-Ray it actually does sound and look better in my HT than the cinema. But I still like to go out sometimes.

I stopped going to movie theaters in 2002 after purchasing my first big screen HDTV. I'll still catch a movie on the big screen every now and again, usually when I get free passes from work or a major film is released (LOTR, Harry Potter, etc.), but I would much rather stay home and experience a Blu-Ray movie any day of the week.

My home theater is cozy. I can stretch out on the couch, drink a beer, and eat real food while I watch a movie in 1080p awesomeness without anybody kicking the back of my chair or carrying on a discussion behind me.

I still go out, but not to the theater. I have friends over to watch movies with me if I want the "crowd" experience. It's always better with friends.

To tell you the truth, movie theaters wouldn't be so bad if people shut their traps during the film. The amount of unrelated personal conversations is astounding! Why pay $8 to sit in a crowded theater and talk to the person sitting next to you. Go to a coffee house or anywhere else. Cripes!

Just my two cents.

I also failed to mention that if everybody stayed at home and did not go to the cinema that there would not be a Blu-ray to watch. But I certainly think the proper remedy for talking in the theater should be public executions.

For anyone worried about cinema presentation being the major problem of going out to your local cinema, then there is good news. Carmike, the fourth largest exhibitor has been digital now for two years. After seeing this company make it through, financially, the big three: AMC, Regal and Cinemark are all going digital starting this year. It will be expensive, which of course will be passed onto you in the form of higher prices all around, (plus an extra $2 for any 3-d feature) but in my opinion is worth it. The first movie I opened in digital was 300. Imagine seeing that in pristine digital quality on your local big screen.

Anyway. If you have one of these companies in your city, next time you visit them, ask the manager when their location is expecting dlp. I think you will be surprised at the quality of presentation.

I watched 'Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem' at the theater and I kept thinking of how much better it will look in Blu-Ray. And I won't have a guy coughing all the time behind me.

The bigger problem for me are the rude people going to the theater. Talking isn't that big a problem, it's the people who absolutely cannot shut their phones off. I've seen more people in the last 6 or so months who somehow feel that text messaging in a darkened environment is not big deal.

If everyone stayed home, movies would be released on Blu-Ray FIRST! No wait time at all.
