Well, I'm going by the progress that Lionsgate has made on these films in their catalog for a new transfer. Which is nothing. Most of those titles I was able to import for a better video bitrate and high def audio. I find it funny that you think physical media is on the way out since there is still a demand for it and has advantages over digital.

Just watched this on Netflix, and maybe it's because I'm not the one paying the Netflix bill every month, but this film looked okay to me.
Felt even better when I came here to find the 2.0/5.0 review.
PU as we used to say when I was a kid.

How have we still not gotten a new release? This is easily the worst transfer I’ve watched on Blu Ray. Is the digital version just as bad?

There was a new release of Young Guns in Germany a few weeks back. Anyone know if it has a new transfer?

Definitely needs a new transfer. Lionsgate could revisit some of their earlier discs that either had rot or poor transfers.

I'm hoping to find that out as well, bit reluctant to buy without knowing if it's a new transfer or not

Have received the new young guns mediabook from nsm records. It's not a new transfer it's the old german disc re-packaged. Saying that though, popped in my old UK DVD just to compare and oh my god the old DVD was awful, colours were horrendous, detail was very poor too even for a DVD by comparison the DVD that came with the new mediabook release(it's dual-format) was very close to the blu-ray just softer really but colours were identical to the blu-ray

Thanks for the review and taking a chance on the release.

I love YOUNG GUNS II, but am not so crazy about the first movie for a few reasons (Sheen, whom I can’t stand, being one of them). Still, though, I suppose I should get it at some point and give it another chance. A nice new Blu would sway me, but it sounds like we will have to keep waiting.

I've never seen Young Guns II, but loved the soundtrack album by Jon Bon Jovi (and Jeff Beck on guitar).

You're missing out. Easily one of the most fun films the 90s produced. Emillio Estevez. Viggo Mortensen. Directed by Geoff Murphy. What are you waiting for?

One of the best things about part 1 is that it isn't part 2. It's a different movie altogether with part 2 being a continuation of the story-not a rehash. I think, perhaps, if Sheen's character were finished in the film as he was in real life you may've loved 'Young Guns' 1.

I love part 1 though (not as much as part 2), but I hate the way they botched Tunstall's death. And I never really liked the music in part 1. Part 2 knew when to use an actual score and when to rock (end credits), much like 'Appaloosa' (2008).

IMO, the weak link of the YG series was their casting of Pat Garrett in both films. It was passable in part 1 because Garrett didn't play much of a part, but my gosh, even in that small role Pat Wayne was soooooo bad. So very bad. In what was supposed to be a crucial and ominous scene, Estevez outclasses Wayne by a country mile and all Wayne had to do was say a few lines (which he clearly fumbles) while mostly being (purposefully) out of focus. (Did anyone else notice that when Bonney turn his back, Wayne (as Garrett) goes for his gun, hesitates, then fixes his coat instead. This is obviously alludes to the "trust" aspect between them and also a nod to some rumors that Garrett shot Bonney in the back in 1881.)

But anyway, conversely, IMO Garrett is the ONLY redeemable aspect of Peckinpah's Billy the Kid movie. For many reasons, I REALLY dislike that film. But I think Corburn nailed Garrett amazingly, and in a perfect world it would've been his Garrett in the YG films playing off of Estevez's Bonney. Garrett as cast in YG2 was not stern or menacing enough to represent who Garrett was and the threat he was to Bonney.

The elder Corburn as Chisolm/Chisum in YG2 was great too. But if I had my way, they would've just dyed his hair black and he would've revised his role as Garrett in the YG series.

I know what you mean. And the resemblance to his brother is a bit distracting since their characters are not supposed to be related. However, in this instance Sheen did do the character of Brewer justice. I gotta give him that. I also love when he yells "Everyone just close their fargin' lip for second and let me think!" It makes me laugh every time.

[Show spoiler]And oddly, it's probably one of the few 'based on a true story' films in which a character's death is actually (much) scaled back from what happened in real life. (In actuality, Roberts made a total mess of Brewer's skull. Poor guy.) His character dies so early in the film that he doesn't have time to get on my nerves.

Funny enough is Young Guns II is basically a re-imagined version of Pat Garret and Billy the Kid.

Yes, absolutely, Coburn would have been great as Pat Garrett in the YG films.

I liked John Dehner as Garrett in THE LEFT HANDED GUN, which remains one of my favorite movies exploring the Billy The Kid legend. However, I think my favorite of all the Billy films is DIRTY LITTLE BILLY from 1972. To me that just seemed to capture everything I’ve ever read about the reality of the myth, if you’ll pardon the contradiction in terms.

Only in the sense that they both focus on the aftermath of the Lincoln County War (i.e. the hunt for Billy The Kid). I mean, it's not like either are "original" scripts. They're both based on the same thing with YG2 is MUCH more accurate in most ways, including having age appropriate characters (instead of casting 40 year old dudes to play 19-22 year olds).

I will give Peckinpah's film one thing in terms of accuracy though: Bonney fell off of his horse during his final escape.
