i'm not looking at the 350. i'm looking at the 300 as i have lucked out on getting a s300. as i mentioned earlier. i will not buy another player. 3 players in one year is too much and will definitely end my love of blu.

So far, the S300 has been a solid performer with firmware updates addressing all the glitches. The current problem being that some movies such as Wall-e and POTC will freeze during playback for no particular reason with 4.30 firmware. Sony should work that out during the next release. If history is any indicator, we might be lucky to see something by Christmas.

Otherwise, welcome to "The Tank" club.

I own the Samsung 1200 and the Sony S300 (as well as a Panny BD30 - which is the best of the three overall). The S300 is a solid BD player. Sony has done a good job in keeping it current via FW updates (latest is 4.3). It is slow to power up and load BD's but after that it generally will play everything you put into it. TrueHD audio is also now available (via HDMI out) with a recent FW update which means you can get 2 of the 3 lossless audio formats (unlike the 1200 which only will give one lossless format - LPCM).

SD DVD upconversion is OK - not nearly as good as the 1200 but that was the 1200's strongest feature. I hope this helps.

thanks. that actually did help. i'll probably keep the samsung for upconversion. unless it doesn't cost much to fix it.

What exactly is "The Tank"? I ask because I don't know, and I think that my BDP-S1 might qualify (it is a bit of a behemoth, after all!)...

"The Tank" is, of course, the Sony BDP-S300. It's slow, heavy, and reliable. I love mine.

Well, the BDP-S1 could also be a tank. But I was the first to dub the S300 "The Tank", so it is the flagship of "tank" models.

what I don't understand is if they know the 4.3 firmware is buggy, why are they asking those of us who called to return our players for repair rather than telling us how to reinstall 4.2? They will be clobbered with players which will make the wait time intolerable.

I asked the same question when I was having problems with my player. Sony tech support told me that the BDP-S300 will not allow installation of an older firmware update. I wondered whether that was really true or not, but I did not have a copy of the 4.2 update to try it. It's just as well. Doing so might have invalidated my warranty.

I'll be selling the refurbished BDP-S300 since I've already replaced it with a Panasonic DPM-BD35 player (which I am very happy with).
The relacement BDP-S300 Sony sent came with the 4.3 update, and it's running great. It can play all the movies that it previously had trouble loading. I tested WALLE out as well and it played without any problems.

Still waiting to hear back from Sony on what exactly went wrong with my original player.

It's a decent player. PQ is good. SQ, you can't bitstream HD audio, which is only an issue if you have a newer receiver. The only thing is that there is no DTS-MA decoding for the s300. Also no Blu Ray Live capabilitiies, which you don't have to use but pretty much any blu ray movie that comes out now has some sort of Blu Ray Live interactive feature(S). I don't know, I think you would have been better off with a newer sony or panasonic at this point in time no matter how much you lucked out. Put the s300 in a different room if you have another HDtv.

i'm sorry, but i don't have that kind of money. i don't even have but one hdtv. i got a blu-ray player back in may and it's not working out so well for me. i found this sony bdp-300 for a decent price. i wasn't planning on getting it, but i have and though i can't really afford it either (we're in a recession, christmas is here and is about giving towards others, i don't make enough to blow it foolishly, etc. ) i have to find a way to pay. i was hoping to wait til after christmas, but all i want to do is play i want to believe and at the time of buying the s-300 i thought my player was a complete brick. turns out it's not a complete brick.

i jumped the gun. that i realize. but it's too late to worry about that now. i will eventually get my samsung bd-p1200 fixed and i will have two players. sorry if this post seems nasty or hateful. it's not your fault or anyone else's in particular. i'm just getting a little tired of people, in general, thinking that i have a money tree. or that i'm bill gates' son. i don't hurt for sure, but i have to be careful or i will. priorities come first. i admit that i acted very rashly in regards to this s-300 purchase, but the x-files will do that to me. and blu-ray too. ok, maybe not so much. he he. still the combo of the two is enough to drive someone crazy.

i know. i jumped the gun on purchasing the s-300 and i have no one to blame but myself. when people are told the situation and circumstances and still tell me to spend more money it bothers me. but i'll live. it's not life-threatening. anyway, question on the 300. can you pause and stop the movie? i read on epinions you can't. that you have to watch it all the way through.
