I don't even really like westerns in general, but I watched this at the urging of some of my friends about a year ago and this is really an amazing movie. Eastwood and Hackman are fantastic.

Has anyone ever had problem playing the 4K disc on the Sony UBP-X800?
I just got the disc, tried playing it and it constantly freezes..never had this problem with a UHD disc before. I have an XBOX ONE X also and tried the disc there and it played perfectly. |

A lot of people have issues like that with random titles on the Sony players. From my testing they're just really sensitive to dust, marks and scratches. Others say they never have issues though, so who knows.

wbdigitalsupport@warnerbros.com I knew that Warner often removed the digital from later pressings/releases of their regular BD I had not realized that was now happening with the 4K titles. |

Since I have the DVD and the HD DVD of this film you could consider me as a fan of this film, awhile back I wanted to rewatch the movie again and grabbed the HD DVD of the shell and put it into the player, unfortunately it was one of many Warner Brothers HD DVD's I own that suddenly stopped playing. After checking some others I have over 50 WB HD DVD's that didn't want to play anymore, after being ignored by WB Benelux after the UK office resent my mail to them, I slowly started replacing some of those discs to UHD. The Matrix Trilogy, Blade Runner (BD), Batman Begins, Goodfellas and of course Unforgiven.
If Unforgiven was my first UHD I would've quit the format on the spot, It's superb when in light conditions but unfortunately the film is mostly shot when it's dark and things are barely visible. My father was watching it with me said at the end such a shame the movie was shot this dark. I remember the DVD and HD DVD never were this dark. I watched 19 UHD movies prior to Unforgiven and every single one wowed me, even stuff like San Andreas which isn't reviewed as good. I have a 55” LG OLED C7, a Sony UBP800X UHD player (and also an Xbox One S and Xbox One X that can play them) and an Onkyo TX-RZ830. I used the Rtings 'calibration' settings. It's a good thing the Blu-ray is included so I have that one if I want to rewatch it again. Last edited by Wizz_Art; 03-19-2019 at 02:49 PM. |

I will! A little bit offtopic; It actually makes me sad that I watched movies on UHD HDR10 with the setting for dynamic contrast turned off before I knew this, although these others all looked very good and I wasn't dissapointed with any of them so the sad part is all relative.

Can anyone who completed the survey mentioned on the insert ("Your opinion matters to Warner Bros.! Just go to wba-listcommunity.com/unforgiven to have your voice heard about Unforgiven. Survey closes 8/23/17.") recall what they asked about? Was it an even semi-substantive opportunity to give feedback about Warner UHD BD? No such insert on a more recent Warner UHD BD I have (Superman).

Lol, theres one of those survey cards in my early copy of the 2001 uhd, before the reissue. I didn't swap for a reissue so no clue if the new ones got the survey cards. It would be kind of funny if they didn't.

Even after refreshing my memory by looking at the site db's listings of Unforgiven releases going back to DVD, I don't understand what release you're referring to. We didn't even have a UHD format in 2001.
I looked at your collection, Brian, and at least according to that you do indeed have the 2017 UHD BD which is what I understand to be the "reissue" (the new transfer on the 1080 BD included in the UHD BD combo). The copy I have of that includes the UV insert card with an invitation to participate in the survey on the back. |

I have to assume this an artistic decision by Mr. Eastwood. However, it would have been nice if he turned a the brightness just a tad. It's tough even making out faces at night in the town, more like outlines. I may try the dynamic contrast setting for this movie. However, it is rather ridiculous to turn it on for just one move. Again, all the other 4K movies I own are fine in dark scenes. |

The darkness is 100% intentional. Brightening the image will only ruin the nice blacks, not to mention the original photography. Its not like one will be able to see better cranking up the brightness, all that darkness is in the OCN.
