Well damn Jhiggy I shouldve known u was gonna write a novel haha. Anyway I aint judging the Titanic as I havnt seen it but I know what took place and I was just using that as an example. What I was trying to get at was people hate on Pearl harbor because of the love story. I rarely hear bad things about how it depicted the war but that it had to much of a love story. Anyway what about Hurt Locker? I have heard several "real" Iraq soldiers talk bad about that film and how bad it depicts what is taking place and u said it was a great film! Whats up with that? Got Em!!

Ahh I get ya. I think Hurt Locker is a great film and was the deserving winner of the films nominated, but it has little to do with whether I think it was a realistic portrayal or not. Titanic and Pearl Harbor are major historical events, which is why I commented about how realistic they are and their focus. Hurt Locker did aim to convey some sort of realism about the war in Iraq and there's no doubt it did a pretty good job of that. By that I mean that it showed just how dangerous and precarious it is, like when they walk into a city and don't know where ppl with guns and bombs will be. The bomb detonation squad I know nothing about so I can't comment on whether it was realistic or not, but I've heard both that it was and that it wasn't.

PEARL HARBOR: didn't at all need the love story and was tacked on to make money. the film wasn't made to tell a historic tale, like it should have been. there are tons of stuff surrounding Pearl Harbor the writers / Michael Bay could have worked with, not a needless love story. look at war movies like Black Hawk Down, SPR and even Band of Brothers, they succeeded greatly without a massive love story (or any, really), but Pearl Harbor thought it couldn't?

it seemed to me like the people who wrote Pearl Harbor thought only guys were gonna go because "it's a war movie" so they threw in the love story to attract a female audience as well. bad move imo.
I think you're right about Pearl Harbor. I think you're somewhat right about Titanic. What you're wrong about is that it was full of mainly rich people. That's fundamentally untrue, as the steerage class was the largest. There are many poignant stories of those on that ship and why they were trying to come to America. I disagree that it needed the love story because there are innumerable stories to tell about that nite, but it obviously did better with one. Since it's not a war movie and cannot succeed solely on action like Pearl Harbor could (and Black Hawk Down did), it needed a personal story to revolve around. It was just a logical choice to make it a love story, which allowed us to see the inner workings of the ship and everything else.

Ok I see. Yea Ive heard a lot of complaints about Hurt Locker and some of the things portrayed. I just didnt care for the film in general but thats another story. With PH since I also dont know the fullness of the history of what took place and also goin into it knowing its a film and we meed other elements to balance it out as a movie, I was ok with the love story and what took place. The battle scene was of course epic! Got Em!!

This movie gets me pumped up whenever I watch it (totally only seen it twice, though). A few gripes about the cinematography and plot, but overall it's a fun experience.

Hard to believe that Ed Zwick, director of such acclaimed war movies as Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, and Defiance, took on a romantic comedy. The fact that he did it successfully shows just how good of a director he is, especially in such a formulaic genre.

I thought the acting here was fantastic--Gyllenhaal just keeps getting better. Anne Hathaway probably would get an Oscar nom if it weren't for such an unusually deep year in that category. She plays the early onset of Parkinson's role very well.

What I liked about this film is it does what romantic comedies are supposed to do, but then goes a step further. The film is genuinely moving, with the scenes at the convention and at the buffet really sticking out. It is also quite funny, with many laugh out loud parts. What makes it go a step further is that it defies formula and aims to comment on the pharmaceutical industry. While it doesn't do so as well as it could have, the thoughts are still there.
Glad you liked it, I'm looking forward to this. I agree, Jake is just getting better and better.

One of my girlfriend's favorite movies and one that honestly never gets old to me, as well. I never can get enough of Culkin's expressions, Pesci's quips, and Stern's scream.
This is one of my favorite Holiday films. Glad you liked it but is it because of your girl?.........

Film: 4 stars (out of 4)

I'm undoubtedly biased about this film and Malick's work in general, so I won't comment
I cant wait to watch this. 10 more days and i'll be back home for a little while. This and Apocolypse Now and a host of others will be on my MUST WATCH list.

[Show spoiler]It's objectively a fantastic cinematic achievement, from a technical perspective. Some may like the love story and some may not, that's all well and good. However, it doesn't do a disservice to the tragic event like Pearl Harbor did. That film embarassed those that know anything about the event. Titanic was widely seen as masterfully showing what happened, even despite some things that Jack and Rose would not have been able to do. Even the harshest of historians admitted that it was very true to life. Furthermore, that film alone created a fervent interest in Titanic. For all those reasons, Titanic is a rare achievement.

Do I think the love story actually took place?? Really? Since when did anyone think that Jack and Rose's story took place? The event is historical, not the love story. Could that love story have taken place? No, because as historians point out Jack wouldn't have been able to move about the ship the way he did. However, that certainly doesn't mean that love affairs did not take place on that ship.

Pearl Harbor wanted to be a love story first and foremost and a historical piece second. Titanic wanted to be a historical piece probably even more than a love story. At worst, they were meant to be equal
.
There are many movies that suffer from this.

Nice review. I want to see this because I'm a big Anne Hathaway fan, but I'm going to save the money and just get it on Blu-ray. I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it and I rarely go to the theater anyways.

While I do watch everything other than True Blood on a weekly basis either via cable or Hulu, I actually don't think that's a bad idea given how many shows get axed nowadays. That way you know if the show is actually going to get more than one season. I'd do it just like you, but I don't have the patience to wait that long for new seasons of shows like Chuck and Fringe.
