3D is good for big theatre screens, but I don't think it works well for TV, even the really big TVs. I haven't seen Avatar yet, and I'm still debating with myself about whether I should see it. It's supposed to look magnificent, but the social commentary is laid on a bit thick. Nothing ruins a good action movie like heavy preaching.

The 3-D version should be exhibited in 1.85:1. The 2-D is 2.39:1.

Enjoyed it and i do like films in 3d but i will not shell out for another Tv just to watch a couple of films in 3d.Also if it does take off and most films come in 3d it will become very boring very fast.I think it will be a sad day if one day all i had was a 3 D option to watch a film.Hope this never happens but who knows.
Avatar story was average and had been done better in The Last Samari and Dances With Wolves.I also agree that in 2D this film would not get the same praise it getting. So Storytelling taking a back seat to the visuals was a mistake but 3D it covers it up well.It was a visual treat but my bum was getting very numb until last 30 mins.
On a good note the the main blue female was outstanding and the emotion and power the actress gave to part was amazing ,a pity the rest of the cast were miles behind her.

Depends on the cinema and possibly country. The 3D presentation I saw was 2.39:1 here in the UK. I asked people on AVForums and it was the same for others.

I went with the family to see this yesterday at the local multi-plex. The crowds were maddening, but I really enjoyed the movie. The g/f didn't, saying simply, "It isn't for me." It was a bit long at 2:40, but I was engaged the whole time.

My only complaint, other than Sigourney Weaver's wooden "acting", is the heavy use of cliche--military man, egghead scientist, noble savage, etc.

It's an interesting place to be as a movie watcher when you're rooting against your own species and against your own nation (since, strangely, all characters were American).

I was generally impressed with the 3D effects. The most effective 3D effects were often more subtle than just the occasional arrow or gun pointing in your face. For example, the ash falling from the sky would pop out and seem to drift just in front of my face. This helped give a more immersive quality to the film.

One odd effect of the polarized 3D glasses was the tinting effect that resulted in the film not being as bright as 2D. I saw the film on the RealD 3D projection system. Does the IMAX 3D have same issue since IMAX uses a different 3D system?. The new blu-ray 3D specification also uses some type of polarized 3D glasses. I wonder if this tinting/dimming effect will be an issue with 3D blu-ray?

Went to see this with my friend last night. We very much enjoyed it.

I bought him a BX2 BD player from Sam's Club for an XMAS present as he had a poor DVD/VHS combo player he was using with his HDTV to watch movies.

After we got home from the movie and started to watch a BD, he commented how he was glad I got this for him and asked if Avatar we watched at the theater was in HD because it didn't look as good!

Where are you guys getting the idea that new TVs are required? I don't think that's the case. Here's a quote from the Bits:

"The format is also display technology agnostic, and show is compatible with all display technologies (plasma, LCD, LED DLP), but a display with a higher refresh rate is required. "

1.78 was for IMAX, 2.39 is for all other theaters, 3D or not. It also appears Cameron was aiming for a 2.39 image (which would make sense given his past few outings as a director).

I saw Avatar opening day. Although going in I didn't think I would enjoy it at all, because when my brother showed me the trailer I said "this looks stupid". Boy was I wrong, I loved this movie. Must say it was my fav of the year. Really looking forward to having this on Blu.

The actual aspect ratio of the film you see in the theater for digital presentations of 'AVATAR' is entirely dependent on whether the movable screen masking is vertical or horizontal....I kid you not. The issue is screen size, and therefore if the screen is inherently larger in scope (2.39:1) format then that's what you'll get, otherwise the presentation will be flat (1.78:1 or thereabouts). I.e., if the masking moves in and out from the sides, you will get a scope presentation and if it moves in from the top and bottom then you'll get a flat presentation.

This is not entirely true. While Sony and JVC are experimenting with polarized presentations of the 3D spec for future models of their TVs, the majority of currently available 3D implementations (many of them DLP) are of the LCD-shutter glasses format which sync the left/right images to alternating frames from the display.

It's not not that preachy. Don't believe everything you read. Make up your own mind

I've seen it presented in DLP at two completely different theaters part of two different theater chains and every time it was presented in 1.78:1.

IMDB listed the IMAX 3-D versions being 1.78:1, but the 2K 3-D as being 2.35:1. Is it possible that both theaters received an IMAX copy? Very strange.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/technical

Either way, I hope they preserve the 1.78:1 image on Blu-Ray.

I saw this for a second time today. I originally rated it an 8...I enjoyed it a lot more this time so it's now a 9: The theatre was packed today. No one was seeing Sherlock Holmes lol.

i watched it twice. first in 2d, and then 3d.

honestly, i gave the film a 8.9 when i first watched it.

i gave it a 8 in 3d.

firstly, i hated the 3D version of the film, i thought it sucked, and thought it was a gimmick or sorts. i'll be getting this on Blu on 2D instead.

secondly, on the film itself, i thought it was awesome 1st time around, great visuals, etc- i thought the acting was abit terrible...
2nd time around however, i was able to closely look at the actors. terrible.
utterly terrible. other than that, it was great. story was good too, althought people say its a rip-off of Dances with Wolves.

what i don't get is that people rip on it just becasue it's been done before.
who cares? everything has been done before. what matters is how the story is presented. the characters, story- setting- they were great here ( take out actors, but still)

I saw Avatar today in 2d. I wasn't expecting much, but enjoyed the movie. I might see it again in 3d.

This action adventure will no doubt be a great addition to any Bluray collection.

I watched it in 2D on Christmas morning. And I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. Kinda surprised.
