I'm one of the biggest techies out there. I am constantly upgrading things and wanting to try out new equipment. I've had over ten high-end A/V receivers in the last 5 years. I've had over 6 LCD sets in the last 6-7 years. I've had my current one for about three years now, finally stopped having the urge to try new displays when I settled on this one, and I've switched home theater speakers about 4 times now, in the last 6 years. I built a monster gaming PC last fall, and have switched out about 5 or 6 pieces since building it, just because I constantly have to tinker and go bigger. I have, absolutely, zero interest in UltraHD discs or 4k in general. It's the first major upgrade in recent years that I haven't given two sh!ts about. I've seen plenty of 4k displays, displaying 4k material and while they certainly look nice, it's just not something that's worth buying a new display and re-buying all of my movies for.

I've been in love with my current TV for three years now and have no desire for anything else. It looks phenomenal. The only way I'll ever buy a 4k set is if, when this one craps out, 4k sets are all that are available or if they're at an identical price point to 1080p sets. That, and as I've brought up a dozen times over the last year, studios don't seem to give a sh!t about 90% of their titles at 1080p on Blu-ray, so I'm very doubtful that they'll care at 4k. Anyone wanna pick up a 4k copy of Predator: Ultimate Wax Edition? Yeah, me either.

As far as 4k gaming goes, again, not interested. I've seen it plenty of times, in person and it certainly looks crisp, but not so crisp over 1080p that I'm wetting my pants. We're starting to hit diminishing returns when it comes to resolution, especially with your standard in-home display sizes. I'll never have a 100"+ display, so 4k would be lost on me. I know there's minor differences at smaller display sizes too, but it's just not a big enough difference to rebuy everything, in my opinion. 4k is, more than anything, a marketing buzzword that TV companies and movie studios have moved to in order to sell more stuff.

What they clearly aren't realizing is, the people who are most going to be into this stuff are people like us, and we know how they treat large portions of their 1080p releases, so how they think we're all going to just be suckered into more mediocre releases, I don't know. The 4k demos I've seen, certainly, look damn nice. The problem is, they're demos, they're meant to look nice and meant to sell TVs. When the real material and UHD discs start showing up, we'll be lucky if we see half the amount of time and care that are put into the shiny demos that they use to try and sucker us in.

I'm not trying to be a hater either. I don't fear change. I welcome it, when it makes sense. I jumped on the Blu-ray train, almost, from the beginning. I loved how amazing everything looked. 4k just isn't blowing my skirt up, whatsoever.

You nailed it right here. How many 4k UHD discs are we gonna see with heavy DNR? 4k isn't much use if they still DNR all the detail out of it. With newer digital films I guess DNR isn't used so much anyways, since grain doesn't exist, but if they keep ruining older films with DNR then 4k won't matter.

only time will tell but we will have to wait and see how old films look like when they are remasterd

There's also the issue of titles finished on 2K DI, many of which I can see being sold on UHD in the hopes that most won't be aware that they're inherently upscales.

I don't think this will be an issue at all. All of the recent 4K remasters over the last several years have generally been excellent in this regard. I think the studios have finally gotten the message and understanding (not counting older 2K catalog masters that had baked in DNR from years back that still get released occasionally). With newer digitally filmed movies not an issue either, but given almost all are finished in 2K I'm not sure how many will come to UHD BD unless they are upscaled and contain HDR and P3, but can they still call it UHD?

Are you gonna hold off bluray disk purchases now, to wait for ultraHD bluray? Nope! I have said it once and I will say it again and that is I have ZERO interest in 4K. Everything in my HT setup is running smoothly and the only thing I have left to add is a subwoofer. If I was going to go 4K I would have done it when the X900A came out but I passed and went with my W900A and I havent regretted the decision one bit. I'm set and very happy with what I have and I dont see any changes to my setup for a few years, that is until my 55W900A burns itself out. So I will stick with Blu ray for the forseeable future.

Why should I?

the majority of movies are still finished in 2K Resolution, CGI is always 2K and I have 40" and 32" screens.

Ultra HD makes sense for large format movies, but for 35mm is overkill in my opinion even when the OCN is "technically" 4K-capable. I have Blu-rays that come from 2K scans of the IP that are already much better than original 35mm prints seen at theaters. What more can I ask? At some point enough is enough....

I don't care about HDR applied to old movies because you can't create what's not in the original source....

BDA is desperate for money but there's no way people are gonna buy new players just for these discs. DVDs are beating Blu-rays 70%-30%, Ultra-HD BD is gonna be 5% at most....

Considering normal prints are markedly inferior to blu-ray resolution, that's setting the bar pretty low... I doubt any filmmaker wanted his films blown through 4 stages of analog printing, there was just no other way to make so many prints.

That's true, and Blu-ray already fixed that problem brilliantly. So the bar is not set set pretty low right now, it's pretty high actually.

The question is: does it need to get even higher for 35mm movies that have already been properly remastered for Blu-ray?

My answer is maybe yes for preservation or theatrical distribution.

For home viewing? Not so much.....

Pretty much, yeah.

There are definitely some examples of very mild processing done to some modern remasters but it is much more rare. It was mostly a "make these DVD masters look more HD" technique, which if we're honest pretty much worked for a while if you read early BD reviews. Now we're all older and wiser and the studios mostly release unhampered modern 2k or 4k scans, maybe with just a smidge of grain reduction or contrast boosting.

I have a few on preorder, but I've made a list, checked it twice.

Some movies will be on iTunes, lesser films that I can pick up for less than a rental. I picked up a couple in the last few weeks for $3.99-$9.99 a pop on sale with iTunes. Thanks to free digital copies we have a rather robust streaming catalog that's useful for taking on a road trip. The iTunes count is at 200 or something right now and I don't just outright buy a film for that unless it's on sale and I know I'll watch it a couple of times. I always look for the BD with digital copy. Some are only on Vudu, but most are doubled up. I think I've bought less than 20 digital movies, the rest have been included in the BD. I refuse to pay for something I don't own when I can own the media for the same price. It's nuts.

Some will be on BD, 1080p will be sufficient until they wear out, then 4K. The count is at 400 or so. It includes every movie I ever owned (we replaced our entire DVD collection), plus gains with the Mouse having a kid and a few movies that have come out over the years that I felt were worth buying.

There there is the list. Some movies I will absolutely buy in 4K, no ifs and or buts about it. Day freakin' one. I want the color palet of 4k unleashed on the Disney Animation classics. Blockbusters and classics must absolutely be had. This is at 100 right now.

So it'll be a duke's mixture in our house lead by physical media. God help us if streaming is all there is someday. Nothing like a long term lease that ends the day you die. Truly sad and these people gobble all of it up for convenience. Ugh.

I'm trying to remember the last 4K sourced Blu I saw an issue with...I cannot recall it. I know people have issues with the color timing on some, but I have been fine with those I have seen.
