To keep this thread on track we could be looking at 12-16 Hammer movies on bd in September & October.

It will be had for under $40 easily. $42 is not bad but $30 sounds better.

My experience with these releases (like the Vincent Price collections) is that they typically don't go for a lot lower than a 30% discount.

Life's too damn short to be waiting for a $5 savings when I could be thoroughly enjoying these flicks when they come out....

I will play the waiting game on titles that I'm not so passionate about...

$5 a movie too much! I demand $3.50 a movie! Flea Market furniture is actually quite comfortable!

Actually pre-ordered mine 6 days ago when it was $59.98. I was sure that the price would come down, as it almost always does. I certainly don't expect Universal to give them away. It will probably get even lower, but, 8 blu-ray first release movies for about $5.00 a movie, why would anyone wait any longer.

I don't see a reason to pre-order until the reviews come out. If it's a good picture quality across the board or even new(ish) transfers, then $42 will be a great value even if the extras are barebones. If there are some "bad" tranfers (i.e. several of the films look like Family Plot from the Hitch set) - then $42 wouldn't seem like such a deal IMO. I'm assuming part of the low price is going to be due to lack of extras, which is fine with me. But if the PQ/AQ is far below average, that is not fine with me at any price.

Of course I'm glad there are always early adopters willing to pay to be the guinea pigs in these situations.

Dude, it's basically 5 dollars a movie if you have Amazon Prime. Those transfers would have to be wretched to not be worth that! Considering there are UK versions of 7 of them and all of them look at least acceptable besides maybe Kiss of the Vampire and Captain Clegg (and some of them like Curse of the Werewolf and Phantom of the Opera and Paranoiac look pretty darn good), they'd have to have some kind of catastrophic encoding problem for them to not be worth that much!

I did wait on the Warner set as that was 40 bucks for 4 movies, but this is half as much per movie so I have no hesitation. I won't with the Mill Creek ones either, since I'm sure they'll also be well under 10 bucks a movie.

Don't think it was pointed out, but Amazon is PM'ing (surprise surprise) WM's price. They have free shipping no minimum right now:

Hysteria and Nightmare are vaguely similar, but less Diabolique-influenced. Crescendo could also probably be thrown into this category of twisty thriller/psychological horror.
Maniac (1962) was also influenced by Diabolique.

I have a significantly higher opinion of Nightmare. It's creepy and beautifully shot - and the plot (and performances) are more engaging than Paranoiac.

IIRC the interview with Sangster which was on some disc or another had him saying he'd explicitly written those three as Diabolique riffs, but maybe he said all four? I thought it was way less twisty than the other three, but I don't remember it all that well other than I really didn't like it (largely due to Kerwin Matthews being very miscast). I can't remember where that interview was at all, maybe in the Flesh and Blood doc?

Yep, it is definitely a good starting price. There is no disputing that, and often when a label puts a good price on a title i want I'll just go ahead and buy it right away out or principal. But with the Criterion sale and Kino sale... already on quite a buying spree. Can't buy 'em all.

I wouldn't mind having all these in time for halloween, but I'll probably be waiting and hoping for a Black Friday type deal instead (though that might not be likely). It also depends on what other horror titles might get announced. I still need to buy the Warner set too.

Unfortunately, this is me. When it comes to Harryhausen, Hammer, or most 50-60's SciFi/Horror I don't wait to purchase. I was one of the first to get the Japanese bd of The Thing From Another World to my chagrin. That was the only one that I can truly say I lost the gamble. At least the case and cover art are excellent. Small consolation.
