Wow!! Great read Retablo, but i went from being super pumped about Psycho to wondering if this sort of thing is being done to all movies from that era.

Well its all pretty much speculation, but a lot of films were shot open matte then cropped later. It's just the intended crop that no one really knows. This could be the case where opening it up to 1.78:1 might be the best option, although it seems like 1.66:1 might be my preferred ratio.

The problem with watching a comparison like that is that the widescreen version feels more cramped because you can see the additional image of the fullscreen version. If you just watch the widescreen version, it wouldn't look tight at all. I think the 1.85:1 ratio looks fine.

er, it's being done to most movies right now.
If a movie is shot on super35 for a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, which is the majority of new films I think, it's usually cropped from a 1.33:1 image on the film.

Current films aren't the issue. It's older films, where the directors and cinematographers have passed on, so the original intent is lost to someone who is now doing the mastering.

And if that's how Hitch intended it, then I'm perfectly fine with it as well. Problem is, we will never know. Gus Van Sant supposedly saw original film canisters of Psycho (probably when he was researching his awful remake) that were labeled 1.75:1.

Glad to see the new cover art. Now I hope they live up to their words of "meticulous restoration". And I hope they give us the same with more Hitchcock. I'm actually startin' to get a little pumped for this, since that new cover art seems to reveal a little more love and care. And that Alfed Hitchcock masterpiece on the bottom gives me the hopes that they just might release more Hitch like Rear Window Vertigo, The Birds and so on in the future, all with that Hithcock masterpiece stamped on 'em. And my DVD viewings aren't getting any better as there's no comparison to a decent blu-ray presentation.

That reminds me...Has anyone noticed the soundtrack to The Trouble with Harry on a US TV car commercial? I wish I paid more attention to brands, but I can't remember which one it is right now.

Doug

Edit: I saw it again last night. It's a VW CC commercial, where two guys in a parking garage see one.

Already pre-ordered, but I'm a little nervous about the aspect ratio. Sounds like 1.66:1 would be the way to go.

it was released 50 years ago this week. too bad it wasn't completed for BD release by now. it really should have had a major release like the HD launched on its actual anniversary. this is one of the most important films ever, regardless of anyone's preferences, it is really that important and paradigm changing.

well, with the extra few months, let's hope that they at least do it right :/

I'm just as excited as you but I HATE the new cover art. It makes it seem like a cliche modern horror film. It even looks like it could be a cover for the Psycho remake. I much prefer the original cover, which is now the British cover, with the full red and Janet Leigh's face in the shower. The red stands out and it's one of the top 5 most iconic scenes in the history of fim, so it makes sense to be on the cover. Not some cliche picture of an isolated hotel. HATE the cover!

You should import the UK version then. I think it's also a steelbook.

I like the new cover over the original poster, at least.

It makes more sense to release it in October, which is when most people are looking to buy horror movies. It's Summer time right now. People are on vacation, or going to the theaters. They'll sell more copies in October.

haha yeah it's certainly a step up from that, although I do like vintage posters!

It's a steelbook? Interesting...thanks for the info.

I think the new cover art is rad and like it much more than the same tired ol' screaming Janet Leigh pic (not to mention Janet Leigh isn't really what this film is about; it's what's in that house up on the hill)...

True, but that's arguably the most iconic and well-known scene in movie history. I think I can let it slide that's become somewhat cliche.
