Haha, YES. Since it's a doomed-to-fail and unnecessary film anyway, just make it Tarantino-style and then title it THE EXORCIST 4: SAVAGE STREETS 2, PAZUZU 0.

Another thumbs up for this doc. Great behind the scenes stories, artistic influences on Friedkin both throughout his career and specific to the Exorcist. This was a fascinating documentary about Friedkin in general and specifically about the exorcist. A must watch.

Update

While Green has yet to be confirmed as the next director to tackle The Exorcist, Jason Blum did confirm to Den of Geek that Blumhouse will, in fact, be producing.

The interview takes an interesting turn, with Blum teasing a new direction for the next Exorcist, likening it to what they’ve done with John Carpenter’s Halloween.

“[It’s] going to be like David’s Halloween sequel,” Blum tells the site. “I think it’s going to pleasantly surprise all the skeptics out there. We had a lot of skeptics about Halloween and David turned them around, and I think he’s going to turn it around with The Exorcist.”

"I want to make a movie that works for both [audiences],” says Blum. “I want to make a movie for people that know and love the first Exorcist and are furious that we’re doing this, but somehow drag themselves to the theater. I want them to come out happy. And I want to make a movie that people who’ve never heard of The Exorcist really enjoy. I think David did that with Halloween. I think he’ll do that with The Exorcist also.”

Is it just me that thinks DGG and the people around him really overestimate the 2018 Halloween film?

I know it made a good amount of money but the general reaction that i've heard since it came out was "yeah, it's ok". It's a middle of the road horror film.

True but I don’t mind they make more sequels to classic franchises because in my opinion new horror franchises since the early 2000s are largely forgettable.

You're not alone. I'm not convinced DDG has any "feel" for horror or suspense.

Maybe this is a new trend for classic horror franchises. First we got remakes and reboots of the original film for franchises like Psycho, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street and Child’s Play. Now we get reboots starting with the sequel in Halloween (2018), Leprechaun Returns and Exorcist sequel reboot. This approach is not bad and I predict other horror franchises will get similar sequel reboots. I personally want to see a reboot of Child’s Play starting with part 2, I love the original film but thought the sequels are too comedy focused and not strictly horror like in the first film. For the Exorcist sequel I will definitely see it, it can’t be worse than the original Exorcist II.

Hoping they will make a direct sequel to A Nightmare On Elm Street with Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp returning that's been rumoured since Halloween 2018 came out.

I thought it was even slightly LESS than middle of the road. I didn't completely hate it, but I never felt the urge to watch it again or even remember it much.

I saw that Jamie Lee Curtis called it a 'masterpiece' on Twitter.

Yeah, not so much....

I'll go out on a limb and say I doubt Green is going to do this in a directorial compacity.
He's going to be 3 horror films in, I think he'll want to give a different genre or something lighter a go.

As for who should get this is either be Coralie Fargeat or Julia Ducournau.

Given where the first season of The Exorcist TV show went (won't spoil), I hope this new one does not do something similar. I enjoyed the show, but hope they have it in mind when creating this new film, especially with the H18 comparisons.

It's funny though, this series is kind of like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, each sequel/prequel appears to only directly connect to the first one and completely ignores the rest, yet it seems to be considered a new fad. I saw lots of complaints regarding the new Scream film taking a similar route, but with a Scream 4 cast member returning, it's safe to say that one won't be an issue!

That press release is interesting in that it acknowledges that there are those of us who think this is a really bad idea.. but will still go and see it.
I'm not usually in the pitchfork crowd when a classic title gets remade or sequaled..
But this is THE EXORCIST, one of the greatest movies of ALL TIME. A direct sequel stands a pretty good chance of being viewed as arguably the WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME.... oh wait..

I guess I'm a HERETIC..

Via Total Film

Quote:
Director David Gordon Green has given an update on his new Exorcist movie that's in the works. In the latest issue of Total Film, the director reveals that the script for his reboot of the 1973 movie is finished – and it looks like it's a sequel than a complete retcon.

"The Exorcist has been written. That was one of my pandemic projects. It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. I like all the Exorcist movies," Green says. "And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into the acceptable mythology for what I’m doing. It’s not like I’m saying, 'Pretend that The Exorcist 2 never happened.' That’s fine to exist. They’re all fine to exist, and I enjoy all of them."

Green adds: "It’s another fun legacy to be a part of, and hopefully we’ll get that going in the near future. That one is a lot of research, rather than just impulsive screenwriting. That’s one that you talk to a lot of people. You read a lot of books, and do a shit-load of interviews. There was such a dramatic authenticity to what that original film is. It’s a lot more than I anticipated getting into it. And I guess I was naive to think that. But it was very exhilarating to be involved in a lot of those conversations that you find yourself in."-Source

Does this mean we're likely to get The Original Exorcist on 4K? I'm really holding off buying it on blu-ray if this is the case.

Universal and Peacock Spend a Whopping $400 Million For New ‘Exorcist’ Trilogy!

Quote:
Major breaking news will have your head spinning.

Universal Pictures has teamed up with Peacock to close a $400 million-plus “megadeal” to buy a new Exorcist trilogy, reports The New York Times.

“Donna Langley, the film studio’s chairwoman, teamed with Peacock, NBCUniversal’s fledgling streaming service, to make the purchase, which is expected to be announced this week, according to three people briefed on the matter. These people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the still-private deal, said the price was in the vicinity of the $465 million that Netflix paid in March for two sequels to the 2019 whodunit Knives Out.

Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton, Knives Out 2) will star in a new Exorcist trilogy that is confirmed to be directed by David Gordon Green.

“I’m telling you that ‘thing’ upstairs isn’t my daughter.”

In more surprising news, Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil from the 1973 classic, mother to the possessed and tortured Regan MacNeil (played by Linda Blair).

As for story details, “Odom Jr. will play the father of a possessed child. Desperate for help, he tracks down Ms. Burstyn’s character.”

The casting confirms this new Exorcist trilogy won’t be a remake but a successor, similar to what Green did with John Carpenter’s Halloween. Green went on record about the film just last week.

Blumhouse is producing with Morgan Creek Entertainment.

The first film in the trilogy is expected to arrive in theaters in late 2023, adds the site. “Under the terms of the deal, the second and third films could debut on Peacock, according to one of the people briefed on the matter.”

Intriguing. I hope it's not just a one-minute cameo.

Errgh just leave it alone. They erased the Halloween sequels, promised something new and then gave us just another bland sequel. Now they are doing the same for Exorcist? The final shot of the trailer will be a quick flash of a grown up and badass Reagan won't it. Yawn.
