I'd say it's objectively bad.
I was disappointed watching it again recently.

Yet despite that, I have this on pre-order and really am looking quite forward to getting it, and will probably even watch it again before the year is up.
One thing that didn't help was the early standard def encoding, which was distractingly bad in some spots.

I wish it were a better film, but it still has a lot that an old monsterkid can enjoy.
Some things in it are LOL bad (a couple of the kills are hilariously abrupt), but I just can't not like it.
A lot of that might be nostalgia, but if someone enjoys the 50's atomic monster genre, this works as a pretty natural descendant of those.
I love the tour of the paper mill. It's the equivalent of the "educational" scene in almost every Universal film where the scientist gives a mini-lesson to the other characters (audience surrogates).

Watching the terrible 1980 horror movie The Children last month, there was a copy of that issue on the seat of an abandoned school bus at one point.

That was a terrible movie, the trailer was scarier than the film - LOL. I think there's some sort of irony at work there, in terms of that scene in the film.

I remember the buzz around the Dracula film, Alien, etc., but the one I remember the biggest buzz was around Phantasm. That's the one everyone was talking about, at the time, at least among everyone I knew. I remember Prophecy as being underwhelming in comparison to most of the other horror films released that year, and something of a misfire considering all the talent involved with the film. Years later I still view it as a mediocre film, although it has its redeeming qualities, and I've always remembered the monster bear attack on the campers in the woods, particularly the infamous sleeping bag death scene.
What this movie most reminds me of is the girl I was involved with at the time. This has caused me to have a "rose colored glasses" nostalgic view of Prophecy that is more about her than the movie. I dragged her to all these horror movies. Bless her heart she always went with me. She eventually got tired of it. We got into a fight over going to see The Fog when it came out.

Nailed its appeal for me perfectly.

Stephen King gives this one a lot of nostalgic love even as he pokes fun at it in his book Danse Macabre.

As I get older, I certainly view more and more things through the "rose colored glasses" of nostalgia. Not that its a bad thing. The girls I dated in the late '70s and early '80s were actually into Horror films, in the sense, that they didn't mind going to see them at the theater or drive-in. Apparently, among the ladies, it was cool or hip to go to these kind of movies. But my memories of that era is that I saw most of the horror films of that period with a cute girl on my arm, and those were definitely wonderful times. These days my lady will stubbornly watch a horror film at home with me, and she tends to favor the pre-1970s films, which I'm fine with.

Prophecy is still one my favorite movies. If I didn't have a pile of movies in front of it I'd watch it tonight. Jonny Quest disc 3, Lost In Space Season 2 disc 6, Tangled 4k, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, Dracula '79...then Prophecy The Shout! cover looks good (but not as good as the Dracula slip cover).
