We now have one HD movie format that everyone can move to. And we can look forward to all our favourite films in high definition.

I expect sales of blu-ray players and movies to increase drastically over the course of this year; now the retailers can push blu-ray to consumers who are buying a flat screen - now they'll have the best HD source to plug into it.

Now, from a gloating point of view I'm less interested in Toshiba's view than I am in Microsoft's. Come on MS give this news some spin that makes you look good! I can't wait to see what half baked press release they will produce for this one! Too bad MS, you did your best to spoil disc based HD media to serve your own downloading plans, but the format war is over and you lost.

Yeah good to know it ended faster...kinda off topic but i was just on ign and saw 2 comments...... Comment 1- "I dont think microsoft will have give a refund, anyway playstation 3 fans everywhere are very happy, I dont know how this will effect xbox 360 sales, sony fanboys are saying ps3 will now catch up and outsell xbox 360 by the end of the year or sometime this generation just because of the bluray victory, but if were a sony fanboy I wouldnt claim victory for sony just yet, microsoft is not toshiba, word is microsoft is preparing to launch a bluray xbox 360 by may of this year and for current xbox owners microsoft will provide the option of a external bluray drive, yes you heard me right an xbox 360 that can play bluray movies out of the box, if this is true sony fans all I have to say to you is whos laughing now. HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA" Comment 2- "how is this a triumph for the consumer i spent 200 on an hd dvd player cuz it was cheaper and now i just spent 400 on a ps3 cuz its the cheapest blu ray player man hd dvd was for the consumer i can see the ps3 winning the console wars off of this since the system is lame and cannont compete lets trick the people into buying one with the blu ray which i feel is very lame cause now alot of people like me who already have 360 that did not want a ps3 will be forced to buy one cause of the title of cheapest blu ray player." I think these dud lovers r scared! Even if they make that BD add on they still gotta go get another 360...unless thats gonna some how hook to current models? Either way whatever they r screwed.

Well it would be kind of hard to continue on with the superior format press release while still conceding to Blu-ray. Mind you it wouldn't have surprised me.

We've always wondered how many units of HD-Ax were actually sold in total. Here's the actual number :

A: 600,000 players in the US -- 300,000 of which were Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. 100,000 units were sold in Europe. And about 10,000 players and 20,000 recorders in Japan. So about 730,000 units worldwide.
So : 300k HD-Ax and 300k 360 addon total installed base.

No wonder Toshiba went below 50% of standalone sales. This also tells us that BD standalone player sales are barely above 300k total. Seeing how many 300-BD sold, I'd say a ton of PS3 owners are buying movies -- likley to the tune of 600k PS3 owners in total, or about 300k-400k PS3 owners are aggressive movie buyers when scaled down to same attached rate as standalones.

Fantastic news

we all knew this was going to be what the outcome was, but its nice to have closure and bring an end to this war. now BD can direct more attention and not compete with anyone. thanks again for all who supported BD, its been a great road which now will only get better

Thank you BD for giving us a fantastic winning format!!!
