I hope you know that Natural Born Killers was directed by Oliver Stone and not Tarantino.

Point is, the movie was someone else's vision. You can't call that a Tarantino movie because it was only loosely based on his story. He didn't even write to script for the movie. Now True Romance is a different story.

I like Tarantino's work. For Inglourious Basterds, I thought
[Show spoiler]the film was mismarketed because the Basterds were barely in the film really and that was what the trailers focused on.
. That was the only thing that kinda bummed me out with the film. But I liked it, none the less.

When did I ever call it a Tarantino movie? He wrote the story, and this thread is about whether or not he's overrated. Well, I didn't like the story. And I thought the movie was horrible. You lose, I win.

Yeah, and with that last statement you obviously proved that you have the IQ of a 10 year old. Congrats bud.

Is he overrated? Yes and No. He makes many movies that are well received and get good reviews, but as for me, I am not a fan of his approach and style.

Overrated? Not to me, I know enough about my own film making skills to know that neither I nor any of you people could do what he does. Yes unique doesn't mean good, but it means fresh, new, people will always like to see something fresh and new.
When he first came onto the scene his movies were like nothing else, when an entire genre is spawned because of you; you are not overrrated at all.

As a generality this forum is filled with people who have overrated themselves and the importance/impact of their own opinions, perhaps we should discuss that instead, would be funner, there a great number of buffoons who need to be taken down a peg, probably including myself.

IMO Tarantino is overrated. I enjoyed From Dusk til Dawn and thought Four Rooms was funny, but those are the exceptions for me. I can't stand most of his stuff.

I think the term overrated is overrated. To quote one of my favorite authors:

"By a curious confusion, many modern critics have passed from the proposition that a masterpiece may be unpopular to the other proposition that unless it is unpopular it cannot be a masterpiece."

I think Tarantino brings a nice product to the screen for the most part. I also understand the knock against him for being a copycat, or plagiarist, but I also understand why some people view it as more of a tribute or homage to different people and styles.

I haven't seen Basterds yet, but I am hoping it's worth the trip to the movies.

good post

Even the most staunch critics seem to agree that he's changed "mainstream" movie making forever when he hit big with Pulp Fiction. It's like certain guitar players that have a tone that is instantly recognizable; he has a style that is instantly recognizable and whether you like it or not, that is rare these days.

His writing is definitely overrated, but I think his directing is underrated.

Tarantino's visual style took a sonic leap from Jackie Brown to Kill Bill. While I'm guessing that much of this can be credited to his collaboration with the great Robert Richardson, his newfound visual freedom (house of blue leaves, 3rd act of Death Proof, all of Inglorious Basterds) is amazing.

IMO he went from a great writer and mediocre director to a great director and mediocre writer.

If he keeps this up I think he will be remembered in the future as a director more than as a writer.

I thought the writing from Inglorious Basterds was possibly his best and hasn't he been working with Richardson since Pulp, if not from the beginning?

I'm glad Tarantino is around - great to have more flavors to choose from when viewing movies. He has his own style (even if he borrows heavily from films he is fans of).

It's interesting that he often writes movies, almost as homages to other movies.

He is a MASSIVE movie lover and geek who also writes and directs movies - his movies are often love letters to those movies he adores.

Perhaps in some people's opinions, he is overrated - either way, I usually end up liking his movies (even if he can sometimes get a bit carried away with the dialouge after a while).

edit - because otherwise it just sounds like you're saying that a certain artist has too many fans which, well, doesn't actually make sense.
Tarantino won an Oscar for the screenplay to Pulp Fiction, as well as the Palme D'Or in Cannes. He won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Award for best screenplay, too. He was also nominated for those awards, and the Directors Guild of America Award, for direction, but did not win. He was nominated for an Emmy, too, for an episode of CSI he directed.

I believe only Grindhouse did poorly at the box office. Most of his films were hits, in the early days of his career.

Every one of Tarantino's movies has received fawning reviews, even when the film in question was structurally flawed. In fact, I would dare to say that Tarantino can do no wrong as far as the professional critics are concerned.

Personally, I love Reservoir Dogs, and like Jackie Brown. That's about it. I've hated every other project he's either written or directed. The two films I've mentioned by him are the only ones that seem to have genuine human emotions and responses in them. The rest are self-indulgent, campy, empty paeans to trash culture.

Andrzej Sekula shot Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, Guillermo Navarro shot Jackie Brown and Tarantino shot Death Proof himself.

I love "Kill Bill." I generally liked "Pulp Fiction" and "Death Proof." Have mixed feelings over "Reservoir Dogs" (ah heck, I kinda like it). Hated "Jackie Brown." Generally liked the other collaborative works he's done (like "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "Four Rooms").

I am a casual QT fan and would watch any movie of his at least once, even if it's bad.

I'm hoping to see "Inglourious Basterds" this Friday!!!
