hmm, I can't seem to play "couples retreat", I will try the firmware update. keeps saying since I am not connected to the internet the bd live is not active but all I want to do is watch the movie

What does this do?

This utility updates the BDP-S300 firmware to version 5.40, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 5.30:

* Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.

Additional improvements over original firmware:

* Compatibility with BD-R/RE discs burned by the Click to Disc™ and Click to Disc™ Editor software included with some VAIO® computers
* Adds Dolby® TrueHD Audio and Dolby Digital Plus Audio decoding functionality.
* Compatibility with the BD-R/RE format (BDMV).

I own this player and i am tring to find out if it plays backup blu rays burnt to 25gb bdr?

I do not know this as i do not have (ever) backed up my discs on 25Gb BDR's.
However, I am also curious to the answer.

It won't hurt anything to try it. At worst you get an error because it can't read it, or it has trouble playing back. It can't be any worse than popping in a CD.

OK Guys I need help here, My SOny S300 doesnt play some of my blus, I bought true blood season 1&2 and it shows the main menu and the machine re starts all over again, but when i try to put other movies it plays smoothly and i saw it here, how to check the latest "firmware" and im running to 4.3, so I kept reading and not I think theres new firmware 5.3 for North America? and I wanna try to update it, can anybody tell me how to do this pls? i read here that burn the discs,.....so after that I just pop the disc to my bluray player?....Id really appreciate it if anybody can tell me how to update this plsssss....

This link should get you to the USA 5.40 firmware download. Assuming you have burning capability all you need is a blank CD-R or DVD-R. I have used both.

Your burning software has different ways of burning. It may default to the Joilet option, if not the disc will not work. Look for this option before burning. A bad disc will not hurt the player.

Burn the .ISO file as a disc, not as a file. An .ISO file contains an image of an entire CD or DVD which contains other files.

If you burn correctly, just pop it in your drive and give it about 10 minutes. I think it said "End" or something on the LCD display when it is done and the disc will pop out. Other status messages will display during burning.

DO NOT stop the update and certainly do not lose power. After that, "The Tank" should be rolling along for you with little to no trouble.

OK guys hopefully somebody will know the answer on this...
Im upfating the firmware on my bluray BD300 and i saw on the sony website that when its updating the tray might open and DO NOT push the tray back or take the disc out, SO my tray opened and its been opened for the past 15 min now and nothing is happenin, and its been 45 min already, Im not really watchhing the update and all the messages on the display panel i dunno if its done updating, but on the sony website says if the tray i open its STILL updating and do not take the disc out until the display says "DL OK", so should I just leave it, coz im not sure if its done updating...how long does the update usually takes?

Sounds like the firmware has been updated. DL OK only appears for a brief second. This is the typical response I remember with Sony players and the Sony instructions weren't entirely accurate. Remove the disc and power back on the player. When the player powers on, the disc tray will close and the display should once again briefly display the "DL OK" message.

Don't leave the disc in the tray when powering the player back on otherwise it will go throught the firmware update process again.

The instructions on the Sony website are incorrect. Just take the disc out and power it on. I've sat there for an hour once.

Has any else had problems playing KickAss on this player? Mine won't play, and has the latest firmware. I am guessing its just a bad disc.

@ rododolak & tsgee, Thanks lads! appreciate it and yes it worked, and yeah the sony website instructions are incorrect, coz i actually followed it and when the tray poped open i left it open for good 3 hours..ggrrrrr....then i just did what u guys said and pulled the disc out and powered it back on, and now my blus play!....Thanks again, appreciate it!!!

any issues with Kick-Ass. I returned my previous copy and just got a new one and it did not work either.

Hey snowball just watched my copy of Kick-Ass Sunday night on my S300 and had no problems. The firmware version I have is 5.4. Maybe the store you got it from had a bad batch?

Damn, that's bad news. I got it from amazon and sent it back, and got another one and still didn't work.

Yup, downloaded and installed it, and checked it and says 5.4, i called sony support and they walked me through checking the firmware also, and they said they couldn't do anything for me, just need to wait for the next firmware, but that don't make sense if it is working in other people's s300.

And you are on your second disc too. Hmmmmmm.

Have you tried unplugging your player for a few minutes? To make it "happy". I have had to do that, and it worked on V for Vendetta. Dont know why, but it did.
