black levels are not an issue, just find the bars a little odd because the image is almost 16:9 but not quite

Who cares?

And why TF do you think Criterion would alter the film to the wrong aspect ratio?

Why not? It's been done before.

I thought it was none of that and I found it breath-taking from first to last act. Stellar performances, amazing locations, unforgettable score...Just top notch all around minus the vertical bars

the frame on my TV is black, which gives me black bars on ALL 4 sides of the screen and that REALLY irks me when i'm watching it!!!

In the past you’ve been flooding threads for classic movies like Triumph of the Will and the Von Sternberg/Dietrich Criterion box set with bizarro questions. Didn’t the far larger vertical vertigal bars for the Academy ratio bother you ? How about the horizontal bars for aspect ratios wider than 16:9 ?

One of my favorite Criterion blind buys ever: Cameraperson
In my opinion, the best movie of this decade: Cameraperson

That's not me being hyperbolic. I think it's an incredible movie. Pure cinema.

Wings of Desire
The Game

I sold off Wings of Desire for some reason I can’t remember a couple years ago. That is a mistake I plan to correct soon.

The Tree of Life is a blind buy, but I have a good feeling about it. I intend to make a double feature with it and The Thin Red Line.
[Show spoiler]

A Matter of Life and Death was one of my most wanted blu-ray titles for years, so I’m really anticipating watching that together with The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp as a Powell-Pressburger double feature.

I recently upgraded my DVD of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so that will make a rather unusual pairing with Fincher’s The Game.

Buying six more titles will earn me my first $50 gift certificate from Criterion. It took longer than I thought it would to spend $500 at their shop (I placed my first order with them in February of 2014). I intend to use the certificate to preorder The Princess Bride and Forty Guns.

I’m hoping that the first half of 2019 will bring us Godzilla and Wong Kar-Wai sets along with a good blu-ray of Roman Holiday from any company. TCM, Criterion, ...I don’t care who it is as long as it happens soon.
[SPOILER]

Oh man. With the 50 added minutes to Tree of Life, and considering that both films are already fairly long to begin with ... both will be just short of 3 hours with the added footage, that is going to be one HECK of a double feature.

Then I'm not understanding. You should know all the answers to your questions, but you phrase them in the forum like you don't, and are looking for answers.
So are you just complaining? Very strange indeed.

I'm hoping the flash sale doesn't start until October 17th right after Shampoo is released.

I think I will watch the theatrical cut of The Tree of Life with The Thin Red Line. I have never seen Tree of Life before, so I think it makes sense to start with the theatrical cut. I intend to watch the extended version sometime early next year. If I really love the theatrical cut or find it kind of “meh” then I might be more inclined to watch the extended version sooner to see if it improves or lessens the film in some way. I have only heard rave reviews for the extra 50 minutes around this site though.

Ahh, yeah, that makes sense actually come to think of it.

I doubt you'll find the theatrical cut "meh" -- but then again I'm a Malick super-fan, so I may be biased.
