I have to disagree, at least in part, this has more to do with the CBS purifying the landscape and removing perceived competition to bolster the justification of putting the new series behind a pay gate in North America for their digital streaming service.
To be so petty and punitive against a fan project that, went to great lengths to having permission of CBS, previously was permitted and tolerated just because of some outcry from a few vocals fans does not endure or absolve CBS and Paramount of being villainous here. Frankly I rarely understand why you frequently take the defensive posture for companies when they are actually being myopically foolish and/or moronic. It was not the Axanar production team that created that raucous and to actually sue them instead of a simple C&D injunction because of the actions of others is ridiculous and to even defend their actions is silly. |

The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond didn't get me excited at all and seemed very generic of some films that are around today. It wasn't particularly Star Trek-like, however I understand the studio are purposely trying to appeal to a wider audience.
Trust in Pegg. Waiting for that second trailer. |

No, read the official FB pages for STAR TREK, TNG, the new films, etc. They flat out advertise for the fan stuff and threadcrap anything to do with the new films. Out and out hate. Vicious, wishing Abrams dead, etc. Been going on for years now, you think nobody upstairs noticed? |

Not trying to be corporate defender guy, but honestly it was more foolish to let the others be made. Copyright law requires the copyright holder to defend their rights, which includes shutting down infringing projects. The Axanar guys have gone on and on about their "professional production" and basically sell blu-rays of the prelude, even though they mask it as a donation, and Paramount basically HAVE to come down hard on them as a result. That's just how copyright law works.

From what I understand that having a copyright does not mean one is obligated to sue anything and everything that may pose as infringement. Clearly some do embrace the scorched earth policy.
By not actively litigating various forms of or potential infringement does not invalidate or necessarily dilute the copyrighted IP. Although that argument is often brought to bear in the opening salvos of a lawsuit. Now when an individual or organization is profiting and claiming to be an official extension of an IP then a rights holder has means of recourse to address that infringement. Taking a cursory look at some of the Axanar official posts they do exhibit a rather entitled and cocky air about them. Further compounded by the echo chamber of others posting even additional inflammatory rhetoric which does not bode well for overall PR. Biting that the hand was not a wise course of direction for them. Fair enough PeterTHX, I was wrong and I agree with you in this case. Well hopefully this does not apply the other fan productions. As far as I have kept infrequent tabs on them, they seem to be more grateful and humble than the Axanar group. Best regards, KvE |

simply AXANAR went from Amateur to Professional, it billed itself as such and surely the actors received payment. $1million in funds via crowdfunding is considerable profit, no matter how it is masked. . I'm not surprised to see the lawsuit.

The trailer is more like a comedy reel probably on purpose by the studio, so as a fan being familiar with the more serious tone of the prior two films, I definitely won't dismiss Star Trek Beyond based on a single teaser trailer when there's an actual story to be revealed in the next trailer. I don't mind humor in a sci fi, exploration/action movie, but I am expecting more serious stakes revealed soon.
Fans are sometimes quick to dismiss a movie based on minimal information offered by the studio at first. If you're a fan of the series so far, give it a chance to show more than meets the eye. ![]() |

One thing I miss in these new Star Trek movies is how the character of Bones is so underused. In the original series show, the dynamic between Kirk, Spock and Bones really drove the show and was the best thing I liked in the later movies.
Also hope that the new movie is dedicated to Leonard Nimoy. Other thoughts...how many times must the Enterprise be destroyed? It really was something in Star Trek III given the history even though the trailer for the movie spoiled it (it upset Nimoy who directed it). I guess it's a fine line for trailers to show enough to entice people and not too much to have the entire movie mapped out in a summary narrative (I'm thinking Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice here). |

I agree about Bones getting shortchanged, the triumvirate was changed (and not for the better IMO) for the blatantly Star Wars-esque boy/boy/girl line-up. Hopefully Bones and Spock get a bit more to do together this time, and it certainly seems that way from the trailer.

The fact that Spock often acts more emotionally than Kirk itself isn't good either, I'm fine with him losing it once in a while but doing it every movie is getting ridiculous. |

![]() That being said, outside of Kirk, Spock and Bones on the original show the other characters were never really fleshed out. They were supplementary in a sense (though I used to like Scotty taking command in absence of Kirk or Spock). That was a shame, particularly for Uhura, as I would have liked to have seen more (something Next Generation got a bit better with their female cast). However, it was a different time in the 1960s. Nevertheless, I still don't entirely like the direction they have taken Spock and Uhura in the new films. |
