Last I heard, $205 MSRP.

Yeah, without more bonuses or alternate cuts of the classic six, I'm fine with my TOS on blu-Ray, my current six on blu and hopefully getting the animated series solo on blu-Ray.

I know, right? I made a few critical comments in another thread and was rather surprised to see so many posters leap to its defense. I mean, I certainly don't hate the film, and there are elements that I'm very fond of, but to call it "problematic" would be a gross understatement.

In the cold light of day, I'm not sure I can find a there there.

I've never seen the director's cut, so I'm afraid I can't answer your specific question about the AR. One of these days I'm going to have to track down a used DVD copy, as I hear many of the issues that plague the original version are (somewhat) resolved.

Yes it certainly has it's staunch lovers. Great that they like it so much but we all have our own opinions.

As for the DE, if you haven't seen it I would certainly recommend snapping up a copy of the DVD. Personally I think it's a good alternative but I don't think it really addresses the majority of the film's problems. I would say it's my favourite of the two cuts though.

Well put and I agree with everything you said. I rushed out to Theater along with every other Trekker when it first came out. I actually fell asleep in the theater and that's coming from a huge Trek fan. Although to be fair I was working graveyard shift at that point in my life and may have even fallen asleep watching The Terminator. It has grown on me a quite a bit over the years though as it was great to see the gang back in the saddle again.
[Show spoiler]I guess the real problem with the film for me was that it appeared that all they did was throw 2 episodes from TOS together and made a movie when I was looking forward to seeing something new (Episodes: Changeling & Doomsday Machine). That and the seemingly endless staring into space without any dialog, pretty sure that's where I nodded off.
As you said though the Director's Cut does remedy some of this and is my preferred viewing experience as well.

I definitely prefer the director's cut of TMP to the theatrical cut. I think that the pacing's greatly improved and the new sound mix is better, not to mention that Vulcan actually looks like Vulcan.

Different strokes for different folks. For me, Douglas Trumbull modelwork over dated 2001 CG rendered in 480p any day.

I completely agree that the quality of DT's model work is far better than the cgi from 2001 but I think the overall changes to the film make the DE better for me. But as you say, different strokes for different folks.

I'm not that keen on the CGI in the director's cut for the most part.

The only new effects that look alright to me are the outside shots of V'Ger and the new backdrop for Vulcan. The rest look too video gameish to me.

Posted this in the Star Trek II thread. It's only sort-of Trek-related, but I thought everyone might enjoy it...

Unfortunately... not. The score was written specifically to compensate for the last of a completed sound mix. Put a fuller mix in there and things start to sound... off. Plus at one point during "Leaving Drydock" the music fades out of the mix altogether.

TMP is a great sci-fi movie, it's just not a great Star Trek movie.

Not to mention awful new title graphics that jumped the border from Voyager on UPN.

I am thankful that Paramount eventually Made TMP Great Again and released the theatrical cut on Blu-ray/DVD even if it's way too smoothed over.

I'd say it's "too much" of a STAR TREK film. All the stuff people don't like about the franchise are front and center in this film. Too serious, too stiff. Roddenberry forgot that there's supposed to be some fun in the universe.

That said, it got me into STAR TREK into a serious way. Before I was a casual fan. The TV series seemed to be kitschy with Kirk fighting white apes with a horn, lizard men, and sneering fu-manchu Klingons. I went back and discovered it was so much more, devouring TOS on late night TV. By the time Wrath of Khan rolled around I was a Trekker through and through.

Ehh, I don't know if I agree with that. Star Trek was version much a space cowboys kind of show most of the time. People great exaggerate how cerebral or slow that show is. That's why I say TMP is more a good, thoughtful and Kubrickian sci-fi film rather than a good Star Trek film, as it feels nothing like the show or later movies.

Now, Star Trek TNG was (arguably) more cerebral and slow, which a lot of people thought was "boring" and whatnot. If TMP was a TNG movie it probably wouldn't have been as weird a fit, though I still don't think it would feel like Trek (and I think protests TNG was too cerebral and slow are ridiculous).

I am watching the director's edition now, can't recall if that last time I saw the movie if it was the director's edition or not. But regardless this actually is a good movie. Sure it doesn't have the action of wrath or a 'living' bad guy (which always helps to have human-ish bad guy in movies, not a machine-intelligence), but it is an excellent mature Star Trek movie influenced by Kubrick's 2001.

It would be nice though, if they do ever do a blu ray version of the director's cut, to maybe add some increased color to the uniform tops, at least to the science / medical ones which should be more blue, the color scheme is a bit drab

Has anyone ever tried Tennessee beans as seen in ST V??? I always wondered what they would be like so eventually slammed a bit of whisky in some beans. One word..... Amazing. Bones was three times my hero from that day onwards.
