Default Anime fans! Is "One Piece" any good??

I was just at the local media store and saw a copy of One Piece on blu-ray for $13.99. I put it on hold till the end of the week and wanted to check it out. Has anyone else seen this? I know its about pirates and this one legendary pirate buried his entire treasure in......one piece.

Is this something that can stand by itself, or do I need to watch the series??

Thumbs up

I wouldn't get the "8th movie of One Piece" without seeing the series first but that's just me. Big One Piece fan myself, need to get it all on DVD soon.

It's a kid's show, like Dragon Ball, or Naruto. If you like those, you'd probably like one piece.
I haven't seen this movie myself, but the kid's show movies tend to be stand alone stories.

I agree, you definitely want some familiarity with the characters.

Side note: Shame of what happened yesterday in terms of the "One Piece" Japan/USA Simulcast. Here is a statement from FUNimation:

“As anime fans know, FUNimation Entertainment and Toei Animation had planned for the first ever online simulcast of the series ‘One Piece’ tonight at 9:00 pm CDT., just one hour after its premiere on Japan’s Fuji Television. Unfortunately, in the last 24 hours we have determined that the FUNimation servers were compromised, even though we employ strict security standards. An unknown individual accessed and posted episode 403 online and as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future. We will make every effort to locate and prosecute the perpetrator(s) to the fullest extent of the law and will provide updates regarding this most serious matter.”

I've never watched anything aside from the first episode once long ago. Blind bought that "Movie #8" on release day, and loved it! Made me want to start watching the show.

I am huge One Piece fan. It is a fantastic series that is well thought out. Great story, great fun, etc. Anywho, the movie that is currently out on Blu-ray is not the place to start. Terrible movie. The first 53 episodes are out on DVD though. I would recommend starting at the beginning or waiting until an appropriate movie is released for an intro to this excellent series.

The movie that is out is a rehash of episodes 96 - 130 (rough estimate).

Yes, One Piece is also a series aimed for kids. But the story has such variety that any audience can really take something from it.

It's good if you a) Like REALLY long, extremely drawn out and what feels like never ending ongoing series and b) You have the patience of a saint, lol! :P

That's just something Shonen Jump likes to do with their series. If it's popular, drag it out as long as you can. Though Case Closed aka Detective Conan is an even longer series that feels never ending, but is not a Shonen Jump series and just more of having a different case to solve each week.

One Piece is more about its weird characters with their weird powers but while having interesting battles to watch even if they can take longer than a DBZ battle and almost as long as a Bleach battle.

It's a great show, even the fillers are good. It's just some of the movies and TV specials that aren't.
