Default Any Astronomers (Astronomy Hobbyists) Here?

Anybody here into Astronomy?

Maybe we could start a long thread on discussing theory and science?

Basic stuff, lol. More than the average person, but less than the well-trained and well-equipped amateur. I can name Jupiter's main moons! I miss back when Pluto was a planet. But I can point out my fair share of planets and constellations with the naked eye.

But deep space stuff fascinates me.

I took astronomy as minor in university, so I'm probably better versed in the theory than most average people.

What astounds me is that when I was taking classes (about 20 years ago, wow that's scary) stars were basically perfect points on detectors. A decade ago they resolved Betelgeuse, and in 2005 an extra-solar planet was photographed visually. The mind boggles at the rapid progress.

And I think I heard that the upgrade to Hubble has a small chance of getting the spectrum of a planet (hence possibly showing life signatures).

It's an exciting time to be alive.

I love space, but have no formal training in the subject past whatever I learned in high school (not much), and what I see on Discovery and other channels like that. I used to read a specific "World and Space" volume of an encylopedia set I had as a kid, and rarely went into the other ones because that one really fascinated me. The depth and unknown-ness of the universe is a trip to me, and always has been.

There is a thread here in the off-topic section where another member and I discuss the begnning of the universe. It was a good conversation, but no one else joined in!

I'm not per say in astronomy but I find it very interesting. I wish I could use one of those big telescopes to look at the night sky.

My favorite constellation is Orion's and its belt.

Same here, I took Astronomy to fulfill my science credits in college, but I've always interested in space, space exploration etc.

I'd have to agree that Orion's belt is one of the most fascinating celestial items...

specifically I mean the Orion Nebulae. It's such a wonderous area of study...

Funny, I was just thinking of a thread like this as I was scrolling down. I only recently become more interested in constellations and such. Living in the city, it's kind of hard to spot them up. But since the Lockdown happened, it's been pretty easy to spot some stuff since the pollution eased a bit. I actually found the Big Dipper and Little Dipper!

I like to smoke (weed) and sky watch, day and night. It's so awesome to see 4 planets at night; Mars is currently above my house. I wish I could've seen NEOWISE, but there's trees and buildings where I'm at, so I couldn't see it in the NW or NE. :-/

There's currently a meteor shower going on, I think until the end of the month. I've seen a few "shooting stars." About 2 days ago, around 5 AM, I saw a long, bright one. It was incredible.

I'd like to buy a telescope in the future.

After spotting Saturn and Jupiter tonight, I though I saw Mars in the Southern sky. But after checking, I found I was looking at the red giant Arcturus!

Mars comes from the East/Northeast and heads West/Southwest. Before sunrise it's in the Southeast. Easy to find after midnight. It's still close to the moon.

I'm still new to this, so I don't know if it's only moving at this location during the Summer.

I was out early morning and saw a light shining different colors; white, green/blue, red. I thought it was probably a drone, or maybe a UFO! Turns out it's Sirius. Pretty cool visual. I may have seen it in the past, but now that I'm more into astronomy it's the first time I really noticed it.

I love looking at the night sky but no more than that.
I have thought about buying a good telescope many times but not sure how much patience I'd have staring with one eye for a long time through one of them.

The fires out here have the moon and planets red/orange (aside from Mars heh). Venus looks trippy since it's usually a bright light outside.
