Default Blockbuster causes huge ripple effect on HD DVD...

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/hd-dvd-on...les-270313.php

Blockbuster's Blu-ray Endorsement Having Major Impact on HD DVD Player Sales

Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray in all of its 1,450 stores is having a bigger impact than it seems. A tipster at an unnamed retailer tells us they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days than they've seen over the entire life cycle. The kicker? All of them were canceled because of the Blockbuster announcement.

Not only that, new sales of HD DVD players are nonexistent, with Blu-ray being the only things moving now.

The more tech savvy of us rent our stuff on Netflix or Blockbuster Online (which is still supporting both formats for now), but this announcement—covered in many mainstream media sources—had a big impact on people who actually rent at Blockbuster.

Any of you tipsters working at other retail outlets see something similar? Email us if you have. – Jason Chen

Thanks tipster!

Default Another Big Blow to HD-DVD (Updated Blockbuster News)

Sure, I'm sure the mainstream public (those that pay attention to news like that) would shy away from HD-DVD. I didn't think the impact would be this instantaneous though! Great news! Perhaps we'll see Universal go neutral before Christmas! Wouldn't that be great!!!!!

Microsoft backing out their support... Toshiba cutting their forecasts... Blockbuster renting Blu-Ray... DTS HD specs twice as high as on HD-DVD...the writing's on the wall. Universal - get your shit together!!!

I hope this isn't bullcrap...I mean, how many people really were ordering HD DVD players in the past few days for there to be such a substantial 'cancellation' rate...?

I'd like to believe this...but I don't think either format is popular enough for this kind of rejection...and anywhere near the level that was implied..

Well, if there are two HD DVD players on order worldwide, and both are cancelled...that's pretty "substantial"...at least in percentage terms.

Blockbusters "Blu-ray only" strategi is the best birth day gift Blu-ray could get.

It will create a lot of awareness for Blu-ray and the winning format

I doubt it's bs. The first I've heard of Blu-Ray on the local news at all was when they mentioned this story the other day.

It's got to impact the average buyer.

It'll be interesting to see the HD sales figures for the next couple of weeks/months. That will show us how immediate of an effect this announcement has. Hopefully the article above represents what is happening at most retailers, not an aberration of what is really happening. Upcoming sales figures should let us know which is the case.

Thanks, if Warner ever does those god aweful Total HD disks, there should be a 'blu-ray turtle' for when you put the disk in on the wrong side.

It's been quite a week or so of positive news for Blu-Ray...

Hopefully, it'll keep coming!
