Ooh, good news if Manga Ents' UK edition doesn't turn out as nice as it should. Thanks for posting that!

Anything worth mentioning with this release? How does it compare to the Japanese and American releases?

I have heard it is on a BD25 with an AVC Encode and Japanese DTS-HD MA 7.1 w/ English Subs. Extras are on a R3 DVD with no English Subs.

You are correct. It seems to be the same transfer as the US release (also a BD-25) but instead of lossy Dolby Digital for the Japanese and two English dub tracks, there is a 7.1 DTS-HD MA Japanese track and a 5.1 Mandarin DD track along with English subs.

As they are similarly priced (US and HK) I would grab the HK one in a heartbeat due to the enhanced audio.

Can anyone with either the HK or Japanese release comment on the subtitle quality? I just got the UK release and they are worse that a Chinese bootleg I once mistakenly bought.

Could you post an example and a time for one or more of the mistranslations? I would be glad to compare it to my Japanese copies.

As an example:
Between 1:24:09 - 1:25:03 So and so says this...

Will make it easier for me

I can't give timestamps just scenes and global issues.
- For the first hour of the film they incorrectly referred to Locus Solus as "Rox". The last half hour they got their stuff together actually
- When Togusa introduces Batou to Haraway (yes they actually hot her name wrong too) they put is as a question "And who is this scary fellow?" as opposed to the interrupted "And this scary fellow..."
- When they get called out to the murder scene, they just go "The victim was an inspector", leaving of the "of Locus Solus". If you didn't know you'd be thinking an inspector of what.
- When Batou is leaving the Ishikawa's car, Ishikawa is doing all the talking, and reiterating that the wet food is bad for the dog. They got that totally wrong and had it as Batou saying "OK, I'll try the dry food". I mean FFS Batou wasn't even speaking.

Could you please switch to the English dub track to check if maybe Manga is using dubtitles instead of real subtitles?

No. They are not dubtitles. They would actually have been better if they were than the garbage they made. The dubtitles still refer to Locus Solus, and Haraway. The rubbish manga subtitles say Rox and Haraday. It is the worst case of subtitles I have ever seen outside of a HK boot.

You have no idea how angry this has made me. This blu ray is worthless. There is no excuse for the subtitles being this bad. The Manga DVD wasn't stuffed like this. There is no excuse, just malicious incompetence. I can't even get my money back on it.

I sampled the original Japanese release (MPEG2/PCM7.1). I assume the newer "Absolute Edition" uses the same subs (I'll try to check soon).

It is referred to Locus Solus from the very beginning

Quote:

It uses the proper "And this scary fellow...". Haraway is also correctly spelled.

Quote:

The translation goes "Consignment Inspector of Locus Solos"

The scene with Batou and Ishikawa talking about the dog food, Ishikawa says something along the lines of "Dry good has better nutritional value for the dog" and Batou freezes for a moment and then get out of the car without saying a word and no subtitles come up.

**Didn't mean to take so long to check these . The original Japanese version definitely uses the proper subtitles.

Thanks, you are a champion. That sounds like the proper subtitles. I returned that rubbish UK version, and I've ordered the Absolute edition from Japan now. I'm still riled about how badly they screwed it, and I'm unsure why - why they didn't just use their existing DVD subs.

I have the HK edition and have seen the US edition.

The subtitles seem to be the same, although there are a few typos in the HK subs and the HK subs do not show song lyrics which the US subs do.

I don't speak Japanese but I did not notice any glaring errors like you mentioned in the UK version.

The subtitles on the Manga UK DVD are messed up too. "Rox" & "Haraday" for example. What's weird is that the dub uses the correct names lol

So I'm guessing they used the same subs for the blu.

Ah right, I thought seeing it was like a joint Madman Manga UK release they'd have had the same subs (and likewise the Blu Ray even has Madman warnings and screen). The Aussie Madman DVD release has proper subs.

Have you seen the packaging on the UK Blu Ray of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence as well? It refers to it as being a '2 disc set' and the special features are listed as 'DVD features'. I've bought a great deal from Manga UK but lately, they just seem to have been incredibly sloppy in their production, to the point where the product is becoming so sub-standard as to be unacceptable. I just feel a little let down by them to be honest.

Doesn't seem like they want people to buy this movie looking at alot of the releases. This HK-release should be the best to get for me who's in region B though, thanks for the info regarding it and its region coding.

The JP Absolute edition is the one I'd pick disregarding money / actually being able to play it in my player, but as long as I can get away from the bad UK release I guess I should be happy. :P
