Post Speaker Questions

Alright as I have stated in the other thread I am finished reading all the articles of speakers on this fourm and went to Bestbuy, listened to a few speakers that were of different brands and I finally chose Klipsch and now I've got a few questions.

Questions Relating To Speakers And Bestbuy

1.Are Floorstanding speakers sourround sound speakers too?

On the Klipsch website they have two sections one's called floor standing speakers and the other surround sound speakers what's the difference between these two speaker types ???

2.I'm looking at the floor standing speakers section on the best buy website at Klipsch speakers and some are amplified floor standing speakers what does that mean I have no clue?

3.I thought surround sound speakers are supposed to be tall like floor standing speakers but on bestbuy I'm looking at klipsch speakers and all they have is short square ones and curved ones is this normal for surround sound speakers?

Thanks in Advance For Your Replys

You have definitely done your homework. The questions you have asked are all legitimate questions that any potential home theater owner needs to know.

1 = Yes floor standing speakers can be surrounds,Front channel speakers, even center speakers if the screen is high enough for the speaker not to block the view.

So in that respect you are correct about Floorstanding speakers.
Klipsch is a speaker company that also build specialized speakers for surround use(I have a pair of them on order now).

Generally surround speakers are smaller and wall mounted to take up less space,as well as to elevate them to a height at which they perform at their best.

Also in using tower speakers for surrounds the surround sound field becomes more directional. You can tell where exactally the ambient noise(like crickets chirping in an outdoor nightime scene)instead of it sounding as if you are also outdoors and hearing the crickets from all directions, similar to real life.

To do this Klipsch)and other speaker manufacturers)build surround speakers that have different drivers(woofers, tweeters)pointing in all different directions to spread out the surround sound effects and make it much harder to pinpoint where the noise from the crickets are.

That is why with Klipsch surround speakers you see half circle and triangle shaped speakers. These shapes allow them to aim the drivers in different positions and angles(I hope I didnt make that part more confusing for you,I get a little carried away at times)

2 = Amplified speakers, These are speakers that have a built in amplifier.

A powered subwoofer has its own amplifier built in to power it.That way it does not need power from your receiver to make it generate Bass.It still needs a signal with the Bass Notes sent to it from the receiver so it is connected to the receiver, just not to the receiver's amplifiers.

Some higher end and larger floor standing speakers have built in self amplified speakers/subs within the speakers cabinet. With these speakers the speakers built in amplifier powers the sub/bass/large woofer part of the speaker, while the receiver powers the mid range and tweeters in the same speaker.

This allows a speaker to provide very powerful Bass/Low end while leaving it tons of power from the receiver to produce crisp, clear vocals from the mid range and exceptional highs from the tweeters.

I hope the reply for question 1 helped in answering question 3.

And there is a Klipsch Speaker Thread here on the Forum.
Its located in this same speaker section and can be found here:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=65891

Here you can find out all you want to know about Klipsch speakers from those members who own and love their Klipsch Speakers.
They are good, well made speakers. And will make a fine addition in building any home theater.

Post More Questions

I went to bestbuy again to listen to the speakers again the store person put on House Of The Flying Daggers on DVD and turned on the klipsch floorstanding speakers, and then Definitive Technology Floor Standing speakers with built in sub woofer, these were also bipolar, listening to those speakers now I am kind of deciding between klipsch and Definitive Technology speakers,Based on the speakers that I heard I have a few questions regarding both brands now.

Here are the questions

1.Does Klipsch sell any Bipolar speakers floor standing or otherwise?

2.Based on the speakers 101 thread it says for the front speakers you can go with direct radiating but for the surrounds based on preference you can go with bipolar surround sound speakers so technically is this how I Would setup my system.

This Is The layout that I want to setup

Two channels for speakers at the front—left (L) and right (R).
One channel for speaker at the center—center (C).
Two channels for surround speakers at the sides—left surround (LS) and right surround (RS).[7]
Two channels for surround speakers at the rear—left back (LB) and right back (RB).
One low-frequency effects channel (LFE).
So for setting up a 7.1 system I will need to get the following speakers in general

Speaker Setup List
Number Of speakers are to the side.
(2)Direct Sounding speakers for the side of the TV (L And R)
(1)Center Channel Speaker (C)
(2)Left Surround Sound Speaker (LS) And Right Surround Sound Speaker (RS) (Bipolar)
(2)Left Back Surround Sound Speaker (LB) And Right Back Surround Sound Speaker (RB) (Bipolar)

(1) Sub Woofer

I also have another question my receiver that I'm getting has a feature called Dolby Pro Logic Iiz
which enables me to have two highet Channel speakers which speaker type should I get for those channels floor standing, bookshelf, or satllite speakers???

I have just a couple of more questions that I will ask later on and then I'm set.

Thanks In Advance for Your Replys

M J... or start with a 5.1, but it's your money )

5) The multiple height function, I believe, is to have speakers at or around ear level, AND THEN speakers above (closer to the ceiling) I believe, if they are the surrounds, say the Left Surround for instance.... the one above will get the same audio sent to it, but it lets you spread out the soundfield more...... I could be mistaken, but either way, you'll want to have the tweeter of this speaker to be 7 or 8 feet from the floor, so satellites would work best since they'll be easiest to mount..... although a wall-mountable Dipole would work too..... I really don't see much need to spend a lot of money on the rear surrounds, let-alone additional ones to add a "high" and "low" speaker.......

mkl;e

EDIT:

Sorry about that..... had a full reply typed up, and a delivery guy showed up, and my son got ahold of the laptop

Anyways.....

It's good you auditioned, but I'd look beyond Best Buys' offerings too....

I'd use full-range for the fronts, and dipoles/bipoles for the surrounds

and #5 above still holds true (he didn't mess up that part )

Klipsch has a Dipole/Bipole the s-2 I believe... either way, I'm sure there are more.... but those are the ones I have the most knowledge of (which isn't much)

Your speaker layout looks good.

Post New Questions

Thanks For your help in clearing a few more things up for me.

I am glad that you wrote that my speaker setup is good that was one of the main reasons why I didn't choose the speakers yet thanks again for your help.

I have more questions though

Here are the new questions

1.Based on the speakers 101 thread it says you can use Direct Radiating floor standing speakers for the
Left And Right Front Speakers and Bipole Speakers for the Surround Sound Speakers but is there an advantage or disadvantage in using bipole speakers for the front (L And R) and the back surround sound speakers.

I'm leaning 98% toward Klipsch now but I have a few questions about them here they are.

1.Iwould like to know if I can mount the Klipsch surround speakers on a stand are there long speaker stands to put them at the correct height level that the surround speakers are supposed to be?

2.If I were to get the extra speakers for a 9.1 Setup can I also put those on stands behind the floor standing front speakers to be at the correct height level also?

Thanks In Advance for Your Replys

THX is a certification... Think of it as a way to maintain minimum standards for quality. Most speaker companies produce speakers that far exceed the recommendations of THX, don't get bogged down if something is certified or not.

Post Thanks

I have one more question can I choose different brands of speakers for the front and a different brand for the surround sound speakers what are the advantages or disadvantages of this because in the speakers 101 thread it said it is better to just stick to one brand for all the speakers in your setup???

Thanks very much for clearing that up now that I have more information from multiple people on this forum and from the THX website I will base my speaker decisions on that information and post the specific list of speakers that I will be getting thanks for all your help

Post Speaker Choices list and some questions

Alright so I went ahead and chose some of my speakers but the only ones I didn't choose were the left and right surround sounds because I don't know what type of speaker to get if I don't have side walls in the room I am going to put them in I imagine they would have to be identical to the front speakers am I correct in stating this,so here are the speakers I chosen so far I am willing to make changes if advised to do so.

Klipsch Icon Dual 5-1/4” 2 Way Amplified Floor Speakers Model:XF-48BLA

Kilpsch Icon Dual 4-1/2” 2 Way Center Channel Speaker
Model:WC-24

Klipsch Reference 5-1/4” Surround Sound Speaker Model: RS-52

Klipsch 12” 650W Powered Sub Woofer

I have questions based on the information shown above here they are

1.Which Center Channel Speaker is better the model stated above or this model called RC-62 ?

2. Does the model RC-62 include a face plate if not can one be put on it ?

3.Does the surround sound speaker stated above include a face plate if not can one be added to it ?

4.What is the difference between the sub woofer stated above and this model called XW-500d ?

Stick within the same series, either the reference or the icons. It's not wise to mix because of the timber matching. Klipsch will recommend what speakers work well with each other, check their website.

I'm pretty sure that all Klipsch surround speakers are bipole only. They're not switchable, and I don't believe Klipsch makes any dipoles at all.

People often use a different brand of speakers for their surrounds, but IMO it's best to stay with the same manufacturer all the way around. This way you know all your speakers will have the same sound (or timbre). This is why you see speakers referred to as timbre-matched. They're designed to sound the same and be used together. As a car speeds by and the sound moves from one speaker to another, you want the car to sound the same all the time. You don't want it to sound like 007's Aston Martin in one speaker and a Jetta in the next speaker. This would be very annoying and distracting to the movie.

As mentioned, stick with the same line of speakers, at least for the front 3. It wouldn't be a great idea to put a Reference series center with Icon series mains.

It seems the XL-23 is the speaker that Klipsch recommends to go with the XF-48s. Here is the entire package as recommended by Klipsch. The best possible speaker to use as a center would be a third XF-48, but this is impractical/impossible for most people, and that's why horizontal center speakers are available.

When you ask about speakers having a "face plate" I can only assume you mean a grill, in which case the answer is yes on all counts. All the speakers you asked about come with removable grills.

The RC-62 (Reference series, Center speaker) and RS-52 (Reference series, Surround speaker) you asked about are from the Reference line. You would be safe using the surrounds, but not the center. You can get away with the surrounds not matching, but the front 3 speakers should all be from the same manufacturer and series of speakers.

As far as a subwoofer goes, for the money you'll spend on one at BB, you can probably get a better one off the internet for the same price. The subwoofer doesn't have to match the rest of your speakers at all.

Bipoles are useable for the fronts- Def Tech and Mirage both make them, as well as some other companies. Mirage still has an indirect-radiating center as well. Personally, for HT (and even for some music) I love having bipolar speakers both in the front and surrounds. I personally prefer a direct-radiating center channel, but there's no reason that bipoles can't be used all around in a typical 5.1 setup. (7.1 you're probably going to want dipoles as they fire out of phase).

MY main advise is get what you want the first time and dont have to rebuy.

If you have to get a 5.1 setup to start you can add the 2 later for 7.1. Don't skimp so you can buy 8 speakers if you can get better quality 6. If your sold on Klipsch be sure to check out the reference line before you buy Icon. Most people, like myself like them better.

I love it. However, it's a B stock, and it was a pain in the a$$ to get from them. With their track record of late I'm not so sure I would try to order anything from them right now. There's a couple of guys in the subwoofer forum waiting on them right now, and one of them just got the "two more weeks" crap from them. For me that was how it started. Then it progressed to "30 days." It was only when I kept calling and finally asked for my money back that they got around to sending me one. They were gonna make me wait for one to come into FL from China (I think) to ship to me, all the while they had a dozen B stocks sitting in their shop in CO. Once I demanded a refund MLS decided they could send me one of those. I have one of the ones with the old amp that apparently had so many problems. I haven't had any problems with my amp (thankfully), but when it showed up it had a bad driver, and they had to send me a new one. I decided a while back that if it ever dies I'm going with an SVS PC12-NSD or something from eD or Epik. I don't mean to scare you away; if you can get your hands on one, it's the best sub you can get for the price. No question about that, but getting one may be a challenge.
