Default Dolby True HD and DTS-HD. What kind of receiver?

I've got a HT-DDW880 home theater made by Sony, and I intend do buy a BD370 (LG blu-ray player) or a BDP-350S (Sony blu-ray player). Both of them are capable do play Dolby True HD and DTS-HD, but I would like to know if there is any configuration on these blu-ray players to make these new audio formats compatible with my "old" receiver. My receiver doesn't have any HDMI input, so, I'd like to continue using the digital coaxial audio input. Is it possible?

Does the sony system have its own receiver? Why are you trying to connect it to an old receiver?

No you can't use TrueHD or DTS-HD MA without an HDMI, digital coax will only provide regular Dolby or DTS, often referred to as a "core" or the high def audio.

The only other option would be if your reciever has 5.1 analogue pre-outs.
But then you'd need to look at a BR player with analogue outs...the Sony 550 for example.

jcurban:

the reason is: I don't want to spend lots of money on buying a pretty new receiver with hdmi inputs... I intend to do that, but not yet. My next step is the blu-ray player!

VinnAY:

Imagine that I've selected DTS-HD or Dolby True HD before watching a blu-ray disc. Will the blu-ray player automatically convert the HD audio to conventional Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1? Remember that I'd like to use the coax digital audio output on the BD player and digital audio input on the receiver.

beerman:

Thanks so much, it's a very good idea, but I'll try to buy the BD370...

Thanks so much to all of your support!

Yes it will. Provided the player is set to bitstream and not PCM (though I don't know if that matters over coax...)

It will down convert the signals but you will not get TrueHD ot DTS-HD. You can get a Yamaha 465 Receiver that decodes both for $325 from BEst Buy. It also has 4 HDMI 1.3b ports on it. For the price it is an excellent receiver.

This is it.

1) If you want to use your old reciever then you should get a Blu-player that decodes internally .
This means the new codecs will come through your reciever and it will show PCM on the display panel.I've done this a few years back and it does work.

This was the reciever at the time when i was useing anologue and it sounded awesome

http://ca.denon.com/ProductDetails/3075.asp#

2) replace your reciever with one that decodes and there's no worries.

3) keep the reciever you have,Buy something like the 350S and ride it optical for sound.(but will not get the new codecs DTSHD and so on)

1) and 2) are your best options

Good luck Brother and lets us know what decision you go with

Ozzman and all:

I've bought a Panasonic BD60. I'm using its digital optical output, and it sounds very very very good. There's no way to compare the BD audio formats with the DVD's audio formats. Just keep the BD on the bitstream mode and be happy!

Thanks to all!!
